Sony working on 'break apart' motion PS3 pad

Sony Computer Entertainment is working on a new controller for the PlayStation 3, which features the ability to 'break apart' into two separate units, each of which contains an accelerometer for 'Wiimote-like' motion-sensing functionality, GamesIndustry.biz understands.

It's not clear when the pad will be officially announced, but it is believed that working units have already been supplied to certain developer partners, according to sources.

The potential for new game types to be developed with the additional motion-sensing functionality should open up the PlayStation 3 to the sorts of gaming audiences that the Nintendo has been so successful at gathering with its Wii console.

Sony Computer Entertainment will therefore hope that, with the ongoing development of the PlayStation Network, the success of Blu-ray as the de facto next generation standard of video, the gradual roll-out of Home later in the year and the release of additional high definition titles over time, it will be able to overwhelmingly position the PS3 as the best all-round home entertainment unit on the market.

The original controller released with the PS3, the Sixaxis, did contain some motion-sensing ability, although it came at the expense of the popular 'rumble' functionality and was nothing like as free as the movement that the Wiimote offered. The Corporation later released a DualShock pad for the console.

Sony Computer Entertainment declined to comment on the matter at the time of publishing, although an announcement is expected in due course, with the possibility of an official unveiling at this year's E3 event.

This kind of controller is, to me, the future. If Nintendo wasn't trying to appeal to non-gamers this would've been the shit for Wii. Dual wielding, pointers, accelerometers, vibration, wireless and speakers, this is completly feasible and I have little doubt controllers will be like this. It won't stick this gen, even if someone releases it of course, but in due time.

Just ordered it off a UK based powerseller on ebay so hopefully should be all ok...

Cool, i did the same. You will love it when u get it! So much better than the sixaxis controller!

Did they just have 1? Because all the ones I've seen are from Hong Kong or Canada.

Will my 40GB PS3 play all PS1 games? Thinking of picking up Abe's Oddysee as it's not on the Store. I've had a quick Google of it and it looks like it should run although not sure if ALL games work or whether 40GB PS3s run any.

Yeah as far as I know all of them run... everyone I have tried so far has worked ok... did you see my reply about the dualshock 3's?

Yeah, sorry cheers for that. I wont have the cash this month to pick one up this month, but I might get one soon. Anyone think they'll sell the white one here?

Just picked up Resistance on Ebay for £7.37. Not too bad.

It won't run any ps2 games don't know about ps1 though.

Well, it doesn't work at all with 40 GB ps3, works completly (via emotion engine/hardware) in 20 gb and 60 gb ntsc ps3 (there aren't 20 GB PAL PS3s anyway), it works partially in the 60 gb PAL and 80 gb ps3 , because it's emulated via software (like 360)

Thats a bargain...I've been looking to pick it up...may have to check out ebay.

Do the new 40g PS3's play PS2 games?

And did you say ALL PS1 games work on PS3?

No the new 40 gigs still don't. All PS3's have the same hardware PS1 emulation though as far as I know it is not software based like the early PS3, PS2 emulation was removed from all PS3's produced after date X. PS1 emulation is like 99% there was a list doing the rounds around the original launch of stuff that didn't work...

Well I've not played anything on PS3 for a while, can't be arsed with Heavenly Sword and Ratchet right now so thought I'd see if I could pick up something for cheap.
