2K Sports Announces Top Spin Tennis for Nintendo's Wiiâ„¢

Popular Top Spin franchise to make its Wii debut by combining real life tennis experiences and fun features this spring

New York, NY - August 22, 2007 - 2K Sports, the sports publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), announced today it will be releasing Top Spin Tennis for the Wiiâ„¢ home video game system from Nintendo. As part of 2K's critically acclaimed Top Spin franchise, Top Spin Tennis features fun, flawless tennis action and the most real life tennis experience to date for the Wii. Developed by 2K's Paris studio PAM Development in conjunction with 2K Shanghai, Top Spin Tennis will be available exclusively on the Wii in spring 2008.

The intuitive pick-up-and-play action in Top Spin Tennis allows gamers to use the Wii Remoteâ„¢ and Nunchukâ„¢ controllers in a way that matches the movements players would make on a real court. The Nunchuk controls the player and aim, while the vibration-enabled Wii Remote hits the ball like a tennis racquet and determines the style of shot ranging from a top spin move to a slice. The Wii Remote also allows players to control the power and the quality of the shot and to serve in many different ways.

The gameplay in Top Spin Tennis will feature an array of modes including singles, doubles, mixed and non-mixed matches, exhibition, tournament and more, with four levels of difficulty and ten international venues. It will also feature more than a dozen licensed tennis stars as well as ten original characters. Up to four players can play Top Spin Tennis using as many as four sets of controllers. To add to the group fun, there are a collection of party games included.

"We are excited to bring our popular Top Spin series to the Wii," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "Given the Wii's unique controllers and the fun family-oriented gameplay, Top Spin Tennis effectively bridges the gap between a sports and a party game."

At last, a real tennis game. I wonder how it will play....

Though there are some things that seem possibly disturbing about that announcement (bridging the gap between a sports game and a party game; name exclusivity may equal inferior design when compared to the upcoming Top Spin 3), I'M FREAKING PSYCHED DUDES!!!

Isn't Top SPin on 360? I played it but the controls felt way too complex. Admittedly that's because after playing Wii Sports I can't go back, so they better do it right.

Top Spin 2 is on the 360 (a demo is on the marketplace I think) and the first one was on the original Xbox.

I haven't played the second but the first one is amazing.

Get in! This is more like it.

I've only played TopSpin2 on the 360 and although I hear it's not as good as the first one, I really enjoyed it. The controls are a lot more complex than, say, Virtua Tennis, but I think that's what gives it the edge for me. It just feels more like a proper tennis game.

Please please please don't screw this one up!

Topspin Wii is "a real tennis game" says dev

Senior produces distances his game from Nintendo's Wii Sports Tennis

Topspin senior producer Jean-Yves Patay told CVG that his team at PAM is aiming to do so much more with the Wii than the relatively simple approach taken to the sport by Wii Sports Tennis.

"I have a son that has lots of fun with Wii Sports", said Patay, but "Topspin on Wii will have completely different play mechanic and a different focus".

"There'll be no big heads and no players without legs," he promised, as he went on to explain why Topspin will be a more "finished game".

"We are taking into account the direction of the move and how fast you're doing it. My six-year-old son just wants to move. He doesn't care if what he's doing is specifically represented on screen. But we [hardcore gamers] want it to recognise the move, so it's not so simple".

"It's a real tennis game," summarised Patay. "Wii Sports Tennis is a wonderful game but in Topspin you will have to move your character and do different swings. You can move normally and that'll be fine - you will just perform regular swings. But if you want to perfect your technique you will need to practise. So I like to say it's a finished game on Wii."

Nice, thats what we all like to hear. This has potential to be great!

Heh and Pedro, for some reason the headline in that reminded of something they'd come to you with in SimCity!

Indeed, now that you mention... I see the pattern. :heh:

Indeed this has potential, but although this is kinda bad to say in the products thread... I'm still rooting for a Virtua Tennis from Sega to come and I expect this game to pressure them... but if I had to choose, I'd probably go with Sega, so I might be seeing this as a replacement or as a means to reach something and never actually get it. (if Virtua Tennis comes) But I wish them well.

Oh, and I sure hope this has online, it would be awesome.
