Rumor Control - IGN's Nintendo Voice Chat

- We’ll see screenshots + video probably towards the end of the year... OF CURSED MOUNTAIN

Jeez... You know what though, I've only just finished listening to it, so I would be quite very slow to write a summary. Someone else should just post Gaf's and I can elaborate if need be.

I actually enjoyed listening to this episode, it was quite amusing at times. There's still plenty of bait for the IGN haters, especially concerning Wario Land and widescreen (which I don't really understand enough about to comment).

I'm disappointed about Fatal Frame (or Fatal "Flaw" :awesome: ), but I'll still get it. I don't think controls is as big of a dealbreaker as they make out.

How dare they share opinions and speculation with their readers/listeners!! (some of whom pay subscription fees)

Anyway...my question of the day. Why is Nintendo incapable of following through with new conventional IPs (Disaster/HAMMER)? Is it because they couldnt find a way to shoehorn Mario or Miis into either title?

Something to note with Fatal Frame, Mark Bozon is apparently a big fan of all the others but couldn't manage to enjoy the game on Wii. The problem apparently isn't just that the controls aren't "what they expected them to be" but that it actually feels worse to control than the PS2 games.

People can jump up and attack that if they want but well people probably had the same feeling about numerous games in the past where there'd been word they controlled poorly (Red Steel and what not) so I wouldn't feel too optimistic about "loving the controls no matter what they say" because there's been plenty of cases in the past where dodgy controls have ruined otherwise promising looking games.

There's still plenty of bait for the IGN haters, especially concerning Wario Land and widescreen (which I don't really understand enough about to comment).

This is one thing thats really rattled my cage. At Wii's launch, Nintendo promised all their published games would be progressive scan and 16:9 (almost as compensation for shipping a Gamecube in a new case). Now why on earth should Wario be any different, just because its a platformer? Its Nintendo being lazy and complacent, shipping out half arsed software. Nintendo have dropped a bollock.

The argument that all 2D platformers should be in 4:3 is bonkers. Paper Mario looked great in Widescreen, Sonic would really benefit from a widescreen display, in fact i can't think any reason (other than being happy shipping unfinished/uncared for software) why people would think 2D platformers would be spoilt by the addition of widescreen display? Or should we debate whether 2D platformers should only ever be single screen affairs?

This isn't the first time Nintendo have mismanaged displays. Both Metroid Prime 3 and Fatal Frame have 'not quite true widescreen', after their initial promises. While there two are forgivable, Wario is not.

Bomberman WiiWare

- 8 player online multiplayer

- Mii support

- 4 players from same console online at once

- Matt & Bozon are psyched, sounds fun

Tiger Woods

- Awesome, fun game, but still has some flaws and old issues - Matt

- Still a step up from previous games

On the radar list for 2008

- Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Sept. 16) - Bozon likes the Wii version more than the 360. Everything seemed to flow better in the Wii version.

- Wario Land (Septemebr 22) - Good old-school platforming mechanics - feels like the games you grew up with playing - Matt

- de Blob (September 22) - Matt says you absolutely need to support this game

- Dokapon Kingdom (October 14) - Fun Mario Party with a twist

- Naruto: Clash of Ninja 2 - Still good and still cool

- Guitar Hero: World Tour - Working, functioning Guitar Hero that has everything the other games have plus Wii-exclusive features

- Skate It - Matt would rather do balance board + Wiimote controls rather than just Wii remote by itself

- Tales of Sympohnia - Bozon is pumped, Matt isn’t a huge fan of the series but he’s glad it’s coming

- Little King’s Story (December 2) - Not entirely sure it’s coming out this year, Matt doesn’t think it will be

- Animal Crossing: City Folk, Deadly Creatures, Shaun White, LEGO Batman, Sim City Creature, MySims, Samba de Amigo

- DS: Lock’s Quest, Viva Pinata, Dragon Quest IV, Disgaea DS, Rune Factory 2, Bleach: Dark Souls, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, Gauntlet, Tecmo Bowl, Moon, Age of Empires: Mythology, Chrono Trigger DS, ASH (if we ever see it), Away Shuffle Dungeon

- Their point: The rest of the future isn’t totally bleak

- IGN will have the scoop on Renegade Kid’s next project this week

Tiger Woods 09 (again)

- One of the best golf game Matt has ever played

- Near 1:1 thing going on (not quite perfect, but really good and better than anything else we’ve seen)

- Visual boost, frame rate has been ironed out

- In the future EA should just go ground up for the Wii

- Next year they have a chance to totally redo the franchise

- Can play All-Play easy mode or standard settings (Then you can totally direct the power of your shots), Advanced setting (everything done strictly by the Wii remote, but the mode doesn’t completely deliver)

- Next year’s Tiger should be “absolutely fabulous on Wii†- Matt

- Online mode so far has been flawless, seems to run better than Madden

- Next year with Wii MotionPlus and maybe WiiSpeak it could be a must-own Wii game

- A lot of people love to hate EA but EA is doing more online and tech-wise than Nintendo is. Matt makes a few comments about how easy EA Nation is

- There haven’t been a lot of balance board games announced including Nintendo

- Matt thinks a lot of third-parties will use Wii MotionPlus in the future

- Discussion about how NHL 2K9/future hockey games could take advantage of Wii MotionPlus

WiiWare/VC slow-down

- Not a whole lot of cool WiiWare stuff coming, Bozon is hoping World of Goo will come soon

- Missing things like Super Mario RPG in Europe on the VC - haven’t had SNES or N64 game in a long time

Reader Questions

- Should Mega Man 9 be priced as a regular NES title or at 800 or so points? Mega Man fans will pay no matter what, Matt thinks the game should be cheaper across the board

- What’s the deal with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for Wii? Is it worth buying? It’s on Bozon’s radar list, if you’re on the fence, then rent it. It’s fun and very cool. Matt thinks it’s pretty fun too.

- Early thoughts/impressions on Tales of Symphonia 2? matt doesn’t have the game yet, should have it very soon

- Any chance Guitar Hero: World Tour instruments will work with Rock Band 2? Bozon doesn’t think that will happen since they went two different routes with the tech

- Madden 09 is fun and all but why isn’t EA making the game look as good as possible? It isn’t ugly, but more can be done, still looks better than any Madden on Wii. Bozon isn’t sure if they’ll do more ever since EA could just add more features instead.

- Any revalations on any old-school style games such as Mega Man 9? Miyamoto hinted Nintendo is working on a New New Super Mario Bros., Reggie kind of hinted as well. As far as non-first party Nintendo, there are only rumblings, nothing solid.

- Lack of information on GTA: China Town Wars? Matt and Bozon give examples of how Rock Star is always tight-lipped

- Is it time to start cracking the whip again until Nintendo mentions something to someone about storage? Nintendo seems to be off in happy land again forgetting people are interested in more storage and seem to have forgotten they have forgotten hardcore gamers as well

- How good are we talking in regards to Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia? It’s better than Portrait of Ruin, not sure about Dawn of Sorrow. Bozon doesn’t know if it’ll beat out Symphonia of Night. Really cool, good.

- We keep hearing Nintendo has a redesign coming for the DS, maybe removing the GBA slot

- Is Castlevania Judgment kind of Konami’s Soul Calibur Legends? It’s too early to say but so far Matt isn’t blown away and isn’t really impressed - So far, yes

- The Conduit will get a publisher it’s just a matter of time. Major publishers have expressed interest. It’s not like a Nibris situation.

- Zelda Wii MotionPlus sword-controls, Super Mario Galaxy add-on pack or something similar, a real Resident Evil game for the Wii all realistic possibilites on Wii. Matt isn’t too sure of a true Resident Evil game though.

- Free Radical is making a Wii title, they’re doing the Wii version of Star Wars: Battlefront (the next one)

- Matt thinks Too Human is a good game but he agrees with some of the complaints (same with Bozon)

- Eternal Darkness on Wii probably won’t happen

- Anything coming for WiiWare that resembles Fat Princess for Wii? Animales de la Muerte is kind of similar, same with Swords & Soldiers

- Nintendo will probably make a design change and use Wii MotionPlus for the next Zelda. Matt thinks the franchise needs a reboot. Matt would be for a Wind Waker style. Bozon would like to see adult Wind Waker style.

- Nothing official coming for Nintendo tracks in Guitar Hero: World Tour on Wii

- Sonic and the Black Knight has a chance if the team listens to the feedback on the previous feedback (faster, don’t focus on the sword too much)

- Matt wouldn’t have considered giving Galaxy a 10 even if he knew MGS4 and GTA4 would get 10s. Matt did consider giving the game a 10 before some issues arose.

- Overlord: Dark Legend is shaping up well. Concept is cool. Should be good with the Wiimote.

- Any tidbits at TGS? There is going to be some stuff definitely such as Little King’s Story

Star Wars Battlefront?:yay:

He's wrong about Rock Band 2/Guitar Hero World Tour stuff. On PS3 and 360 they both work with each game, in Guitar Hero you lose one of the pads if you use a Rock Band drum kit.

Yep. Goes to show that insiders are always privvy to the intel way before the rest of us plebs.

On the Free Radical website it says they're working on Timesplitters 4 and a "Secret LucasArts Project" for "NextGen Platforms". Hopefully that includes Wii for both games...

The Wii version of "Secret LucasArts Project" is confirmed by means of the latest Wii-k in review.

TS4 was "kinda-confirmed," I guess, but mostly because many people saw it as obviousness personified that it would come to a Ninty console. So no hard proof there I would say.

Nintendo Voice Chat Podcast, Episode 21

The Conduit meets Strong Bad.

by IGN Nintendo Team

US, September 3, 2008 - Welcome to the Nintendo Voice Chat podcast. Each week your IGN Nintendo Team – made up of Matt Casamassina, Mark Bozon, and Daemon Hatfield, – get together to talk about all things Nintendo. Craig Harris is back after more than two weeks in the Old Country.

This week's topics include two exclusive interviews, one with The Conduit team at High Voltage and the other with Strong Bad himself. Of course, we talk about other games, including Spore Creatures and Tiger Woods 09 All Play. And, obviously, we answer a bunch of reader mail.

-coming into the office

-this week?

-a bunch of stuff coming up

Renegade Kid's New Project

-rumor stuff:

--named Son of the Dragon (i.e. Dracula)

--gamecock game based on Blacula. seems unlikely

--probably has to do with vampires

--probably not a first person shooter

Questions:

-Skate It! review will be based on all control schemes

-Why no RTS on the Wii? well, why none on DS?

-people are probably afraid of making a console RTS. Diablo action game would be pretty awesome too

-Disaster: Day of Crisis is likely making a stateside release. not too impressed by the screens

-Sky Crawlers: looks good, no domestic media on it.

-no Sonic Unleashed for Wii at Leipzig

-game apparently looks crappy and framey

-if Wii version can run smoothly, it could end up being better. the Sonic games need new hook in order to be made

-Rune Factory Wii: Q1 09? Harvest Moon Wii apparently looks bad, as in made in 1776 bad. so does Lost in Blue Wii. possibly hyperbole.

-Pheonix Wright: as long as theres an engine. maker wants to make a Wii version where you use REAL POINTING ACTION!

-Animal Crossing build probably something like two days before actual launch. 2002?

-Anticipaed WiiWare Games: Animales de Muerto, World of Goo, Strongbad Games, Hudson Wiiware games, Lostwinds 2, maybe a Nintendo game?

-Favorite snacks: Funions, Cheesy popcorn, pickles, alien fresh beef jerkey - apparently pretty good

-Craig is still "eh" on Sonic Chronicles

-Factor 5: no phone calls returned

-FPS games that aren't the Conduit? Call of Duty: World at War? maybe? impressions in near future

-RE2 Wiimake. bogus. they wish that Capcom would make a new IP

-currently more optimistic about the expanded audience games. casual conspirisy sarcastibanter. miss a bit of the complex immersing games

-WiiMotion+ rekindle the love for Bozon

-babysteps happening, but still a good way to go

-NPD data is expensive. that's why you can't see it ALL

-Wii GOTY: Smash Bros? there is a pretty solid list, so

-leaked Sadness footage: not enough to really say anything about it

-Custom Robo Wii? probably not...

-Video Review of Force Unleashed with Darth Vader's helmet

-Tales of Vesperia: cool, but more excited for ToS2... kinda...

-Perin's new company unknown. basically said: if you can't monitor your kids gaming, you shouldn't be allowed to procreate in the first place

-DS/Wii connectivity: fleshed out more eventually?

-Wii Motion+ is probably an honest addition

-Krome studios has Force Unleashed to prove themselves

-WarioLand Shake: lack of advertising probably has to do with scale of project.

-ooo, podcast summary talk! meta-summazing time! apparently i'm the super nerd for typing this. apparently they want these to be more accurate

-talk on how to pronounce SNES that would be difficult to convey in type.

-Bozon once played WoW until level 14 and got bored. otherwise, not much MMO gaming on the podcast crew.

-mushroom men controls are fine, waggle attack isn't so hot

-waggle doesn't seem to be used "right"

-most anticipated DS game: Moon, Soma Bringer (Bozon has faith), Disgaea, Castlevania, Rune Factory 2, Locke's Quest

Strongbad interview (tongue in cheek) ~56 minutes in. listen to it! you'll get more of the jokes.

Strongbad Episode 2

-Strongbad is now a bigger celebrity, but there aren't more chicks who are all over him, though he has more than he can handle

-goals of the games include trying to give the gamer a walk in Strongbad's shoes. smelling or tasting said shoes not suggested

-another point and click game. point and mash would be more accurate

-game is 115 1/2 inches long.

-coming out in September

-about Strongbad defeating the Cow King

-first season has 5 episodes

-many cameos from various characters from the flash. Strongbad wishes he was a lone beefy space marine fighting other beefy space marines. definately GOTY

-playing games to help with the ladies? Strongbad sayz: NO

-Point and mash is to allow play with boxing gloves

-Strongbad is a cyborg. AWESOME!

-transition to 2D confuses him because now he has all that depth to help him miss platforms and stuff

-Strongbad's butt poorly rendered in game he's very disappointed

-Strongbad uses WiiFit for tricking his girlfriend into playing video games.

-also excited for the possiblities of Wii Motion+. time paradox involved

The Conduit Interview: Eric Notsinger(sp?), Chief Creative Officer; Mike, Senior Designer; Joe, Lead Artist ~65 minutes in

state of the game:

-Game is in Pre-Alpha with a number of months for polish

-Single Player mode is basically done. the whole thing could be played through. balance and lighting being worked on bigtime

-now working on multipayer

-"heavy lifting done, Devil is in the details"

Publisher

-been unusual that they had full funding for the game from start to finish, regardless of publisher.

-announcement in less than a month (summary note: currently, HVS has announced that they will announce their publisher in 2 weeks), currently in the hands of the lawers

-Publisher is worth getting excited over and that it wasn't going to be a "me too" Publisher. larger one, but worth getting excited over.

-criteria for choosing included maintaining connections with the press and starting on a sequel

-they've been very picky about who they pick

feature set in relation to development time

-not going to do anything they didn't think they could in the set time

-highest quality shot for

-contemplating vehicles for sequel

-would like the conduit to be the definative shooter

-alot of positive feedback

-detailed feedback going to make it into the final game

Interface

-EVERYTHING is customizable, down to the way the user interface is set up

-runspeed was tweaked. sprint is being considered.

changes at High Voltage

-pressure is on since The Conduit got out

-Eric is getting ALOT of email

-no sexy alien fanart yet... thank GOD

-handwritten letters sent

LAN Play

-Final approval from Nintendo is shakey, but currently functioning in house with up to 12 players, with 16 on release.

Online

-focusing on bug-free quality experience. need more QA in terms of online features

-standards CTF, DM, and TDM at this point in time, but more is being looked into.

-16 players is the goal. framerate held up pretty tightly in the LAN tests. no sigificant lag.

-30FPS lock in all aspects is the goal

What sets The Conduit aside from the rest

-Control is the main thing. closer to a PC experience

-a truly console specific ACCESSIBLE game

-graphics important, but graphics aren't the point

-fixes the learning curve that dual analog presents

-AI has really taken a step forward

Wii Motion+ and WiiSpeak:

-WM+ and Speak dev kits coming early this month

-Speak likely, but NO PROMISES

-WM+ not as much. going to explore the possibilities

-WiiSpeak seems an obvious fit, going to explor the posibilities when the SDK comes in

Tech and Art:

-continuing to work on the tech and art as things go along

-recently put in depth of field. scope mode

-Dynamic lighting being put in

Splitscreen co-op/multiplayer

-co-op being explored for a sequel

-multiplayer not as feasible

-trying to explore modes for more core gamers

final stuff:

-they really want the approval of core gamers

-devloper blog coming

-they're excited where they're going, keep the interest up!
