Roostophe Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 ¡Viva La Cobra! as a second album stands out to me actually now that I think about it. I guess it's not as common as I thought, sometimes second efforts are superior to the first. Sometimes it can be difficult to decide. System of a Down and Toxicity are both brilliant albums, but it's only due to personal taste that I prefer the latter. Speaking of second albums better than the first: The Bends > Pablo Honey
Paj! Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Can you really compare any of Radiohead's output post Pablo to the first album?
Roostophe Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Well, I just did. So yes. Besides, it's just an example of second albums being better than the first.
Slaggis Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 (edited) As much I sometimes like a good old piece of pop music, you keep posting the same thing! I'm pretty sure all three point in this post have been posted by you, here, recently. Not trying to be mean or whatever, but I jus notice it. I've mentioned Boring once before, but have never posted or mentioned Silly Boy, considering Razz only told me about it yesterday. I swear I've never said Britneys next single is Radar either. -- Completey agree Dyson. Their second album is far superior to their first, which only had a couple of standout tracks at best. At least half of Viva La Cobra is damn good. I'm totally addicted to Good Girls Go Bad, I can see it being a summer anthem should it get a push here in the UK. Edited May 14, 2009 by Slaggis
Dyson Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 It's interesting. You have to think of the way it works; when a band forms they're full of musical ideas, and when they go to a record company they'll tend to have a disc almost full of ideas, an album practically ready to put out straight away. Disc one, done in their own time before any pressure is placed upon them by the record company. Of course, if it sells well, the record company are going to put pressure on the artists to put out a second album sooner rather than later as according to their contract, which quite often leads to them being rushed and not up to scratch. You have to give credit to bands that do put out a second good album in that respect, and I suppose their record labels too.
Paj! Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I've mentioned Boring before, but have never posted or mentioned Silly Boy, considering Razz only told me about it yesterday. I swear I've never said Britneys next single is Radar either. My mistake, it was Razz. In this thread, though.
Slaggis Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 My mistake, it was Razz. In this thread, though. People miss things. I posted Good Girls Go Bad a week or so back, but as far as I'm aware Dyson didn't notice it (his reply to me asking about it implied he hadn't). Somehow, I've managed to get tickets for Britney at the O2 on the 11th. I've got an exam that afternoon, so I'm freaking out about how to get down there in time.

Is it true she just walks around stage miming?
Dyson Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 (edited) Completey agree Dyson. Their second album is far superior to their first, which only had a couple of standout tracks at best. At least half of Viva La Cobra is damn good. I'm totally addicted to Good Girls Go Bad, I can see it being a summer anthem should it get a push here in the UK. The first half of Viva La Cobra is what is currently getting the repeated plays from me for now. One Day Robots Will Cry, Kiss My Sass, The City Is At War are all fantastic, repeatable tracks. The World Has Its Shine (fantastic rock ballad), Guilty Pleasure, Damn you look...fuck this song title(Scandalous), Smile For the Paparazzi and Angie are also all brilliant tracks. The others are good but don't get me going back to listen to them again. Because of the addictive nature of the first half of the album, to be fair, I haven't given the second album much of a chance since listening through it, but none of the tracks had the instantly accessible addictive nature of the ones mentioned above. As for Good Girls Go Bad, yeah. It's a good song, could see it getting good UK attention if it received enough radio backing but I don't see it happening unfortunately. Will probably be a hipster hit of the summer though.. Their cover songs are brilliant. Their version of Three Times A Lady really stands out as a fantastic cover. They've made it their own. People miss things. I posted Good Girls Go Bad a week or so back, but as far as I'm aware Dyson didn't notice it (his reply to me asking about it implied he hadn't). Wouldn't have noticed as I didn't give a shit about Cobra Starship whenever you might have posted it, my bad Edited May 14, 2009 by Dyson Automerged Doublepost
Slaggis Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I was going to say "Why would you want to?" but decided to refrain. Is it true she just walks around stage miming? I see what you did there. Sneaky. I assume so, yes. Does it bother me? Not in the slightest. The videos of her screaming "Merry Christmas!" and "Rock out with your cocks out!" during performances are enough to make me utterly hyped. Insane brit running around stage with big set-peices to some of my favourite songs? Can't think of anything better.
GothicPlague Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 but what second albums do?[/b] *discuss* Three words: Origin Of Symmetry also Thursday - Full Collapse At The Drive-In - In/Casino/Out Circa Survive - On Letting Go The Cribs - The New Fellas Metric - Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? Gorillaz - Demon Days Hot Chip - The Warning Los Campesinos! - We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed M.I.A. - Kala Murder By Death - Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them? The Presets - Apocalypso Robots In Disguise - Get RID! The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream From quickly looking at my library I've picked those as other albums that lived up to or surpassed the first
Ganepark32 Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 The only second album I can think of at this moment in time that bested a band's debut one is Dying To Say This To You by the Sounds. I would have said The Open Door by Evanescence but when you really sit down with that and Fallen and compare the two, the debut comes out on top (although technically, you could be picky and say that Anywhere But Home was their first album, and technically it was although it had a limited release, in which case Fallen then counts). Could perhaps say Ignition by the Offspring managed to do better. I think it was. Oh and Human Clay by Creed. Those are the only ones I can think of that I own that have bested the debuts.
Paj! Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I think we've come to the conclusion that a lot of second albums best the first ones. Seems the norm from the people I REALLY love.
Dyson Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Though it's important to note that it's not always the case. *looks at Kasabian, shakes head*
GothicPlague Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Though it's important to note that it's not always the case. *looks at Kasabian, shakes head* Not a fan of Empire or just don't think it's as good? I personally like them both just as much.
Dyson Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 I like Empire, but it's nothing on their first album, which has so many memorable tracks in comparison. Stuntman and Empire are the two tracks that stand out from the top of my head. New album out soon though; hope it's a good'un.
GothicPlague Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 Hopefully it is. You heard Fire yet? At first I wasn't too keen on it but it's really started to grow on me and I love the chorus.
Dyson Posted May 14, 2009 Posted May 14, 2009 That was great. Really enjoyed it. The musical instrument gunfight was superb. Reminded me of their early stuff, Empire stuff, a bit of Kings of Leon and a bit of Elbow rolled in to one. Wouldn't draw in new fans though, it's no Club Foot or LSF.
Mundi Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Been spending a good part of the evening re-listening to some Pantera and Mötorhead seeing as I have not listened to them in a while. I feel like going out and breaking stuff.
jayseven Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 If you fall in love with a first album, then you will almost definitely have your heart broken by the second. If you were lucky enough to 'discover' the band after a coupla albums then good! You'll immediately appreciate that they've come from somewhere and that they're going somewhere else, so you'll be all the more tolerant of it.
Mundi Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 I wanna Pantera forth as a band where the first album is better then the second. Cowboys From and Cemetary Gates on the same disc: Win!
Goafer Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 (edited) My own personal anthem....just written before I chose my username years ago....it was written for me....honest... Mephisto and Kevin - Primus Audio So, who will buy my raspberries? Edited May 15, 2009 by Goafer
S.C.G Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Jagged Little Pill is great, One of those albums that is just brill throughout. S.C.G you are indeed an inspiration to many, with lovely varied music taste. Thanks Paj all I can say though is I like what I like and I keep my mind open to trying something different every now and then, I'm sure there are many other people out there who also enjoy a variety of music - like yourself for instance - and I find it is the best way to enjoy music personally. ^^ Also Jagged Little Pill is indeed great - I have oft listened to it throughout when I was growing up due to my mum being a fan of Alanis Morisette, she would often put the album on in the car and of course back then - when I was younger - I loved it for the - very clearly pronounced - curse word in 'You Oughta Know' lol but of course now I've matured and I can appreciate that track and indeed the album for its rawness and intensity. Actually I haven't listened to the album fully for years... I might go and do so now after reminiscing about it.
dan-likes-trees Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 I like Empire, but it's nothing on their first album, which has so many memorable tracks in comparison. Wasn't a fan of the second at all but I always liked their first. New song's alright, though I'm not that interested in them as a band any more. -- Getting quite into Architecture in Helsinki again... fun band!
