Razz Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Aaahhh, Interpol. Love this one by them: Aaaah! I love this song, but I can never watch the video the whole way through because the doll is quite fittingly evil.
Slaggis Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 (edited) I recently re-discovered this, and I'm loving it all over again. Such a great pop song. It wouldn't be half as good had it been written by some 30-something song writers, and not themselves. I love the "This is the pontential break up song, our album needs just one" line, and the way they flip the meaning of the song during the final line. Edited May 5, 2009 by Slaggis
Paj! Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 I remember finding that insanely catchy and loving it when it came out. I remember chairdriver saying he hated it because it "broke the fourth wall"! They're Disney hoes, aren't they? I'm sure I saw a thing about them in Disneyworld.
Ashley Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 A lot of songs "break the fourth wall", and a greater deal do so in their videos. Hell pretty much anything in the 80s ended with the singer self-referentially grabbing and/or acknowledging the camera.
S.C.G Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Obstacle 1 is quality, I'm currently listening to Turn on the Bright Lights again, tbh on reflection they have got better with their last album but theres just something about certain tracks from their previous albums which I really like.
Paj! Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 I didn't realise until yesterday that Paolo Nutini had a new album coming out. I surprisingly liked his first album, and I quite like the clips for his new one. Despite him doing his best Bob Marley impression on the first track.
chairdriver Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Yeah, I hate when people reference themselves writing songs. "That's why I wrote this song." It's like when you substitute a variable from a version of the same equation you just rearranged - it just leads you to an big undefined 0 = 0.
Paj! Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 I suppose I can see that it kills the fantasy that songs are mystical outpourings of pure emotion.
Portlett Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 somehow ive only just discovered how great mogwai are, and they are the kind of music im really into being a radiohead, cure, pixies etc fan. Whats the best albums to get>?
Ashley Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 I suppose I can see that it kills the fantasy that songs are mystical outpourings of pure emotion. yay postmodernism
dwarf Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 I'm just gonna say this - I hate Lady Gaga. She thinks she's all special because she relies on her unique factor and lack of socialising skills to make her stand-out. Well she can fuck right off, her music is annoying, she isn't that attractive and was a complete bitch when on Jonathon Ross. Hugh Jackman came out with some quality anecdotes and it cut to her in the little holding room and she just either had a straight face or was shaking her head.

Whats the best albums to get>? oooh! my turn! Ok go for: Young Team. It's their first album and it's very interesting. All built around one central musical motif, it's a nice introduction to the various styles the band have gone on to expand on in their later work. Includes Mogwai Fear Satan which is arguably the best fifteen minutes of anything. ever. Mr Beast. One of their recent albums, and their heaviest to date. Has some absolutely monster riffs in. get this if you like bass lines you could damage concrete with. The Hawk Is Howling Sequel to, and more refined sibling of, Mr Beast. This is their latest album and it's very, very good. Happy Songs for Happy People. Irony lol. Mogwai at their most downbeat and introspective. This one is very slow and...meditative. It's very good though, if you're in the mood for some seriously intense thinking man's post rock.

Mmm. While I've warmed to her music as purely pop fizz, I find the personality she puts on annoying. From what I gather it's intentionally fake, tying into the theme of the album being about the obsession with fame and stuff. So...all her OTT behaviour is meant to reflect that? She's just annoying. I like unique/quirky fashion/people, but it's totally superficial. If her music supported the rest of her image I'd be more forgiving.
dwarf Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 But why would you intentionally act differently in a way that isn't true to you? Why would you act like a complete tw*t? There's no need, it isn't funny and it isn't proving anything. I don't mind uniqueness but it's so damned obvious that this is all she is trying to achieve. At least do it in a subtle way or act naturally instead of putting on a crappy facade. Get rid of her.

And the public are duped into seeing her as some warholian creature of awe. Fact is, she's getting off on it, and in a way I love that she's managed to dress up all silly and make people think she's the second coming of jesus just by how she appears. But yes, it's more annoying than anything. I hope after her hype has died down/for future albums she gets a life. I like her piano stuff however.
Dyson Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Happy Songs for Happy People. Irony lol. Mogwai at their most downbeat and introspective. This one is very slow and...meditative. It's very good though, if you're in the mood for some seriously intense thinking man's post rock. It's a shame, as the first album of theirs I picked up I've been sorta put off Mogwai by this album. Golden Porsche and Stop Coming To My House are nice songs but that's just it - they're nice. And so is the rest of the album, there's no dynamics there at all.
Goafer Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Lady Gaga does annoy me. I don't mind people beng weird, but if they're going to be a bit odd, at least acknowledge it. I think it's her pretending that it's all normal that bugs me. Although I haven't seen much of her so maybe I'm getting her all wrong. Although based on the video for poker face, I definately would. Music I'm enjoying at the moment: I blame my dad. I used to listen to this sort of stuff in the car when I was really young. I guess it stuck with me. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance was a particular favourite of mine when I was young. I remember learning that the song was about the death of Liberty Valance when I was a bit older and being a bit gutted. Now I know he was actually the bad guy!

And so is the rest of the album, there's no dynamics there at all. well I'd disagree, but it is a terrible first album to get in to. It's just not an easy album. but then, Mogwai are a band that brings to mind the discussion we had the other day about how we listen to music. Mogwai make albums, not songs. They become more rewarding when you make that distinction and consider each track a small piece of a whole.
Gizmo Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Yeah, I hate when people reference themselves writing songs. "That's why I wrote this song." It's like when you substitute a variable from a version of the same equation you just rearranged - it just leads you to an big undefined 0 = 0. Gotta disagree. Don't see what's wrong with it myself! Similar-ish point: I love the song title "If I had a pound for every stale song title I'd be 30 short of getting out of this mess" by Get Cape Wear Cape Fly. Kinda gives that insight into the background of the song and how it was made.
Roostophe Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I don't see what's wrong with it, either. After all; they did write the song, and the story behind the song is why the song was written in the first place.
Paj! Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I think it works better in some contexts than others. In trippier, more enchanting/whatever music, It wouldn't really fit. But in my traditional acoustic or plain rock music I think it's alright. I remember quite liking it in Beautiful Stranger by Madonna and others that slip my mind. I like in a Tori Amos song (In The Springtime Of His Voodoo), one of her more whacked out ones, in the first high-pitched verse, she sings, "Standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona - Quite sure I'm in the wrong song..", which is amusing, but not strictly the same. I assume thats some refeence to the fact a lot of the tracks on that album were single tracks/improvised in parts, so she might have made bits up while recording.
Paj! Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 ... Sorry, I switched off after 'Tori Amos'... :p TORI AMOS Well, that's your loss.
