flameboy Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Not so much news more olds as think they linked up originally in the gamecube days. but joysitq have this story running as new as a new press release has been sent out apparently, to confirm that the partnership will be bearing fruit on the wii, some interesting points are in bold. In a press release sent out today, GameSpy has announced it will provide "multiplayer technology" to publishers developing games for the Wii. The middleware allows the same online functionality found in DS games but will include friend rosters, matchmaking, and ranking data similar to Xbox Live. It's about time! Looks like Nintendo is finally willing to share their online service with 3rd party developers. Nintendo has had a toe in the online world since Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection launched in 2005, but game-specific friend codes and the lack of a central hub have made the service a cumbersome experience. Could this mean the end of friend codes and the beginning of a beautiful online experience? source:http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/13/nintendo-partners-with-gamespy-for-enhanced-online-play/ here's another link with the story: http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2007/03/13/reminder-nintendo-and-gamespy-partner-for-online-functionality/
ShadowV7 Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Heard about this an hour or so ago.Better be a good system though and VOIP is a must. I really hope they sort out this friend code stuff so the more "hard core" gamers don't need to use them.
Fierce_LiNk Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 When they say friends rosters and matchmaking, what do they mean exactly?
The Bard Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Well, that seems pretty good. We'll have to wait and see whether anyone actually uses it though.
ZeldaFreak Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I hope they mean for a particular game you just add them from the wii console code for people who have the game in the list.
Cube Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 When they say friends rosters and matchmaking, what do they mean exactly? I suspect like Diddy Kong Racing and 42 All Time Classics. 42ATC also has the ranking system already in-place.
Tellyn Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Please use WiiConnect24 so that we don't have to connect to the Internet all the time like when we want to use the Shop/Internet Channel. What's the point of 'always on' if we still have to connect?
Fierce_LiNk Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I suspect like Diddy Kong Racing and 42 All Time Classics. 42ATC also has the ranking system already in-place. Forgive me for my ignorance, but you can go into a bit more detail with that? I know little about these two games.
flameboy Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 When they say friends rosters and matchmaking, what do they mean exactly? I think a friend roster would work more like Xbox Live in that you can see what people are playing etc... a bit like what has been tried with Diddy Kong DS. As for matchmaking, it means putting you against people of similar skill, something you can already do on the likes of Pro Evo DS...so yeah like Cube said it is pretty much like the DS system. I have been thinking about the online experience with Nintendo a lot recently... I know we don't expect much from them and a lot of us would even take a DS system using the Wii System Codes. But surely a lot of other stuff could be developed easily with firmware updates etc... I mean we already have a very basic achievements system of sorts with the Wii Fitness Age and your medal achievements for the training as well as Wii Play, surely they could find a way to integrate this with the likes of the trophies in Excite truck to make even a simple achievement system. Then as for a friends roster, surely an update could simple well update the address book to show what games people have and what they are playing online at that time.
Tellyn Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 42ATC has online leaderboards for every game, and you are ranked out of 1000.
Gizmo Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 People go on and on about firmware updates, and then complain about why is there only 512mb of memory - well, if you want all these updates, its going to be less 512 more 12mb. All the more reason for a hard drive, though ^_^
Gaijin von Snikbah Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Welcome to the future. Enjoy your stay.
raven_blade2006 Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 It must have good communication options as well. Voice chat, text chat, messaging, game invites are a must.
ZeldaFreak Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Please, no VOIP. Then no games like battlefield, ghost recon, rb6. Or those its absolutely essential. Plus I used it on the xbox 360 and was scared, however after a while, you get used to it and is suprisingly fun.
Mr. Bananagrabber Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 I want to talk to my friends. No VOIP is the stupidest thing Nintendo could do. PC's have allowed you to talk online for years. Only allow voice chat between friends if you want to protect kids Nintendo, we don't all have to suffer.
ZeldaFreak Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 People who say no voip are (a) scared pf the unknown, or (b) scared of socialising
gekko Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 VOIP would be cool. My folks and my sister have Wiis too so it'd be great for chatting. At the moment I use Skype a bit but it's a drag as my Mac is upstairs - would be good to do this from my living room.
DCK Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 People who say no voip are (a) scared pf the unknown, or (b) scared of socialising VoIP isn't the same as voicechat. VoIP is making phonecalls over the internet. I agree that VoIP would add little to the Wii, but voice chat is absolutely crucial. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they are willing to improve over the DS system. Yet again Nintendo seem to be lagging one generation behind, but that may be on purpose.
DiemetriX Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Please, no VOIP. If you don't want voice chat just don't use the headset/communicator. Good communication between players is the key to any team game.
The-chosen-one Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 man voice chat is a must that would soo rock wat also will rock when you play Smashbros online using a headset when u kick someones ass and and hearing the other person cry when they are losing haha no but it would rock for sure
ShadowV7 Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 There must be voice chat with online games especially for team play aswell. With the likes of BWii you must talk to each other in co-op to form a plan or some sort.
