Not so much news more olds as think they linked up originally in the gamecube days. but joysitq have this story running as new as a new press release has been sent out apparently, to confirm that the partnership will be bearing fruit on the wii, some interesting points are in bold.

In a press release sent out today, GameSpy has announced it will provide "multiplayer technology" to publishers developing games for the Wii. The middleware allows the same online functionality found in DS games but will include friend rosters, matchmaking, and ranking data similar to Xbox Live. It's about time! Looks like Nintendo is finally willing to share their online service with 3rd party developers.

Nintendo has had a toe in the online world since Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection launched in 2005, but game-specific friend codes and the lack of a central hub have made the service a cumbersome experience. Could this mean the end of friend codes and the beginning of a beautiful online experience?

When they say friends rosters and matchmaking, what do they mean exactly?

I think a friend roster would work more like Xbox Live in that you can see what people are playing etc... a bit like what has been tried with Diddy Kong DS. As for matchmaking, it means putting you against people of similar skill, something you can already do on the likes of Pro Evo DS...so yeah like Cube said it is pretty much like the DS system.

I have been thinking about the online experience with Nintendo a lot recently...

I know we don't expect much from them and a lot of us would even take a DS system using the Wii System Codes. But surely a lot of other stuff could be developed easily with firmware updates etc...

I mean we already have a very basic achievements system of sorts with the Wii Fitness Age and your medal achievements for the training as well as Wii Play, surely they could find a way to integrate this with the likes of the trophies in Excite truck to make even a simple achievement system.

Then as for a friends roster, surely an update could simple well update the address book to show what games people have and what they are playing online at that time.

People go on and on about firmware updates, and then complain about why is there only 512mb of memory - well, if you want all these updates, its going to be less 512 more 12mb.

All the more reason for a hard drive, though ^_^

People who say no voip are (a) scared pf the unknown, or (b) scared of socialising

VoIP isn't the same as voicechat. VoIP is making phonecalls over the internet. I agree that VoIP would add little to the Wii, but voice chat is absolutely crucial.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that they are willing to improve over the DS system. Yet again Nintendo seem to be lagging one generation behind, but that may be on purpose.
