pedrocasilva Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 I don't think Nintendo had any reason to comment on it to be honest. Cos it is still very different, and at the moment a very unique product. But one that admittedly steals stuff from alot of other source, but it really doesn't steal from the Mii channel, or Stage Debut, it steals more from Second Life if anything. A few of the features seem to be a bit tacked on and not the sort of thing to bother about, I mean the sitting and watching film trailers together I could just as easy sit on msn share a link and watch stuff with people. Having said that it does have some great features. Sony Home does seem to take the best aspects from certain things, I mean it is just the rehashing of various different ideas all merged and moulded into one new fresh appealing product. Simply put Nintendo should not have responded the Mii Channel is a unique product just the same as Sony Home is. I don't think this is as blatant rip off as the six axis is (cmon lets admit who are they still trying to kid?) I agree, if I were Nintendo i'd just ignore it, even if it was a blatant copy. Rather than give it attention and blow it out the water. I really dislike when things get public, imagine how would it be last E3 if Nintendo said "you stole our concept" or something, it would be like 3rd world war breaking in there. Sony's attitude was bad, but if Nintendo would have gone with that it really would spoil all E3 for me. Doesn't seem to me like a official response though, just what some spokesperson I've never heard of said. That said it wasn't a bad or "really" out of place comment, just uncalled for, I rather see companies silent about these.
Aimless Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 To be fair, this spokesperson was specifically asked what they thought of Home, they weren't randomly shooting their mouth off to passersby. But I agree it would have been better if they hadn't gone on the offensive, as that isn't usually Nintendo's style. Then again, Sony touts Home as "infinitely more exciting than anything on other consoles" in its promo video, which just made me cringe. All three manufacturers should let their products speak for themselves and allow the public to draw their own comparisons.
Anakenobi Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 To be fair, this spokesperson was specifically asked what they thought of Home, they weren't randomly shooting their mouth off to passersby. But I agree it would have been better if they hadn't gone on the offensive, as that isn't usually Nintendo's style. It's because Nintendo usually doesn't go on the offensive, that the R&D hacks at Sony have been feeling like it's ok to take ideas that Ninty has implemented in it's consoles and use them on theirs. I still remember when the N64 was revealed at the E3 event. With it's analog controller and Star Fox 64 using rumble features and such. By the next E3, Sony comes up with the dual shock controller with analog dual sticks. And it's been like that since. So, Nintendo has to speak up about in once in a while, and not look like a company that is going to bend down and take it up the arse. They need to show that Reggie isn't the only one taking names and kicking a$$.
Amon Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Haha, you make a rather interesting point and I agree. Being passive can be quite damaging in the media. I know this from a personal experience, when I was kind of 'hooked' on a 'friend' of mine. He used to bash my interest in Nintendo by repeatly harassing me of comments made by Sony he read from the internet and making me feel like utter crap. Never, ever did Nintendo retiliate those comments, making my 'job' of defending my hobby even harder. I actually blame that guy for making me such an ardent, angry fanboy I was in the past. Some of that fanboyism is still lingering, though not so bad. On a second thought, it might actually be Nintendo's fault for making me such a bad fanboy by not being more aggresive and pointing out Sony's stealing of ideas. On a third thought, that might actually be a combination of those elements coupled with the fact the a seed of fanboyism already existed before, just waiting for the right soil to make my fanboyism grow (sorry, I digressed). The point of me going so personal was so to put some perspective on Anakenobi's arguments, because I'm having a very hard time believing I've had the similar experience and those situations could've made some people jump from Nintendo-fans to only Sony-fans (and others as hardheaded, angry, bitter Nintendo-fanboys). As of my opinion of PS3 Home-thing, it makes me think of it as a crossbread of Animal Crossing+Mii and hearing about PS3 Home makes me look forward for AC Wii and to see how Nintendo might choose to use AC Wii to combat Sony's attempt of making AC Wii+Mii copy. Oops, now I sound like a fanboy. Sorry, 'bout dat! XD

Heh! that sounds familiar to me... I used to hang out with some people that played videogames, back in the (N64) days. The problem was that they had little tolerance for anything Nintendo. And me, being a Zelda/Mario fan, made me the target of much of their flaming and bashing. Those were the good old days. These days, I've been busy returning them the favor... they especially hate it when I salute them either with "riiiiiiiidge racer!" or "giant enemy crabs" and other Sony exec nonesense. Good times.
Aimless Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Miis and Home are completely different. If Sony have 'stolen' ideas from anywhere it's Web 2.0 endeavours such as MySpace, and wrapped it up in the tropes of an MMO. On the surface of things it's a fairly savvy move on their part, and whilst I think the entire thing is plagued by problems plagiarism isn't really one of them.
Anakenobi Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Look, Sony is really trying to make the PS3 something else than a shelve space waster. Let's cut them some slack. They basically look at what MS and Ninty are doing and implement what works. And Mii's work. If I payed $600.00 for a console I would want it to make me an expensive dinner every day and anything in between.
Zechs Merquise Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Sony are a bunch of fucking parasites. Back in the N64 days they stole rumble and analogue, then they developed 'six-axis', now this. Parasites.
Shyguy Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 i still prefer my PC to communicate as at least on a PC i can type fast ^-^ unless PS3 release a Keyboard i cant see it taking off all that well. good idea indeed, but not really appealing to me
Kurtle Squad Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Sony are a bunch of fucking parasites. Back in the N64 days they stole rumble and analogue, then they developed 'six-axis', now this. Parasites. Not just that, they make the sticks crap. Also...people keep forgeting about them stealing the GC shoulder buttons for the PS3s triggers.
Cube Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Sony are a bunch of fucking parasites. Back in the N64 days they stole rumble and analogue, then they developed 'six-axis', now this. Parasites. But it's not a rip-off on the Mii. Sure, the idea may be stolen from somewhere else, but this time it ain't Nintendo.
flameboy Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 But it's not a rip-off on the Mii. Sure, the idea may be stolen from somewhere else, but this time it ain't Nintendo. Exactly and lets face it, companies nick ideas all the time hell even Nintendo so people rounding on Sony for this are abit hypocritical. It's just like Apple didn't invent the MP3/Digital Audio Player (that was South Korean SaeHan Information Systems) but they've nailed the market with the I Pod. For me PS3 Home actually makes me interested in the PS3, there are a lack of good games at the moment, but once this becomes available out of the box with a PS3 its a great new addition and the amount of time spent playing it along with say an addition game purchase makes it well worth it in my opinion. And besides anything this article from Kotaku, shows that they have had this idea for a lot longer than some people might believe, there is little doubt with the sixaxis was created in reaction to a lack of creativty (I mean how shit did that boomerang controller look?!) and copy cat targets (stealing the old motion sensing idea), but with Playstation Home I don't think it is as clear cut! Rushed Mii clones? The Sims copies? Second Life-ish? Take your pick. But, apparently Sony's concept of Home is a little more original than that. Back in 2005, the following posts appeared on the official PlayStation boards: SCEA and SOE are developing MMORPG(something similiar to ffxi) style online service for PS3 right now. It will have online pack which it comes with HDD and the online software. You can go online and chat with people like mmorpg style. Your stats will have the list of games you have and scores(or ranks) for each game, and other great things. And if you want to look for someone to play online for certain game, you have to go to this certain area(or town) for that specific game or the game will automatically takes you to that town. Sony thinks "hyper links" technology is a history. They want to create a "virtual world" for PS3 online service where people can actually interact eachother like mmorpg style. There are more great details, but this is all I can get for now. I'm not expecting you to believe me Game site You NEWB sent us the above quote. We did some leg-work, and various insiders confirmed that apparently Sony has been planning Home for at least the past three years — Pretty much Xbox Live blew the doors off everything. (Originally, Home had a more futuristic feel. Think PSO.) Even Kutaragi has supposedly been interested in a visual, 3D, online interface with personalized avatars since the PS2 days. The irony: It's been kept top secret to prevent competitors from copying it! Rome wasn't built in a day. What about Home? Brian Ashcraft take note of the bit in Bold- after reading that believe what you will. http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=14848 is the link to the original thread on the official playstation forums
DCK Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 If anything the gaming companies stole the idea from instant messaging programs... Come on, it doesn't take a genius to think this up for your console. If this has been planned since the PS2 days I believe it has been.
Anakenobi Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 Not just that, they make the sticks crap. Also...people keep forgeting about them stealing the GC shoulder buttons for the PS3s triggers. The SNES controller pad was the first to have shoulder buttons. Heck, the N64 had them too.
Cube Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 The SNES controller pad was the first to have shoulder buttons. Heck, the N64 had them too. SNES/N64 controllers didn't have the analogueness of the GameCube shoulder buttons.
