They are not temporary, they are permanant in MM3D (It’s the original N64 game where they are temporary; you’re thinking of the original game). In MM3D, they made Owl Statue saves permanant and completely decoupled saving and The Song of Time; which completely changes the entire dynamic of the game’s 3-day gameplay structure. It was a huge sweeping change with heavy ramifications on the entire gameplay system.

Autosaving is not a one-size-fits-all solution. There are plenty of cases where it would completely ruin the intended gameplay experience (Majora’s Mask immediately springs to mind, but you could also apply this to games like DKC, Metroid etc); as it basically removes any penalty from failure that would otherwise be in place. It’s very abusable and often not a good fit for classic games. One save system that generally IS a one-size-fits-all solution though is the Suspend Save (ALA Virtual Console/Xbox Quick Resume); as it doesn’t remove any challenge and is literally just a pause/unpause that stays in place when the power is turned off.

Already guessed this based off of the first trailer, but it’s nice to have I suppose. I’ve never felt the need for a free camera in any 3D Zelda, as they all have excellent auto-camera solutions (& Z button recentering) anyway; but they’re nice to have for sightseeing (especially in TWW). Funnily enough, this means that OoT is the only 3D Zelda to not have one now!

It’s not the series norm, but it isn’t a series first either. Twilight Princess did the same thing, even in the original GCN/Wii versions (you could always choose what slot to save your game in, even mid-game). What IS strange though is the auto save feature, as it actively works against the way the game was originally designed (and is a serious re-working of the original save system; in much the same way as Majora’s Mask 3D was compared to its N64 counterpart). I get that they wanted to make some concessions for handheld play in both SSHD and MM3D’s cases; no doubt handheld/tabletop mode was the main reason why they introduced Autosaving into SSHD. I suppose SSHD’s solution is less offensive than MM3D’s one is though (which totally broke MM’s design completely).

The original game had 3 save slots. This is just preserving the save slots from the original game.

SSHD now has an autosave feature in addition to the Bird Statues... Not overly enthused about this addition TBH... feels a bit disrespectful to the original game's design...

Losing at penalties is England’s destiny. Now and forever.

I think @Ugh first aid is gonna end up getting my vote based on a pure technicality... Goddammit that's a bloody clever choice! I love Venus Lighthouse

I'm gonna go with Actraiser... Pretty dang hard to top Fillmore! So iconic a soundtrack that it caused Nobou Uematsu to rescore the entierty of FF4 in response! Here's the symphonic version as well for good measure

One of my favourite memories from Skyward Sword was when I found out that you could stab the pumpkins in Skyloft and get them stuck on your sword; then you could fling them off in whatever direction you swung your sword (oh and they would float down the river if you throw it in as well!). That attention to detail just blew my mind! Wasted a good hour or so just messing around with the pumpkins by flinging them at people, enemies and things!

Also worth keeping in mind that Switch 2 is probably coming out in 2023... Which will also almost certainly be backwards compatible; so why should I buy this £310 model when it's due to be made obsolete for my existing games in less than 2 years?

Definitely well worth picking up a Wii U. They're dirt cheap now, and the Virtual Console catelogue & Wii BC gives you access to a vast array of classics, including pretty much every single major 1st party GBA English release (N64 is almost there, but it's missing the original Smash Bros and Pilotwings 64). Now is definitely the best time. The console & games are cheap, the virtual console store is still available, and Wii games haven't rocketed up in price yet (outside of Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, Metroid Prime Trilogy and Kirby's Return to Dreamland/Kirby's Adventure Wii; the latter two of which are actually available to download on Wii U!)

Yeah, there's definitely still potential to remove the cap on the clock speed. I never understood why Nintendo don't just do this in Docked mode at the very least; it's clearly safe, even on the original 2017 model. They're still underutilising the hardware that's in this thing, especially with the dieshrunk "Mariko" version of the Tegra X1.

Honestly? There’s nothing here to really justify an upgrade if you already have a Version 2 flagship Switch. The screen size increase is really take it or leave it (I’ve never had any issues with the screen being too big!), OLED has its advantages & disadvantages, the storage upgrade is basically nothing, and the Ethernet port is a minor additional convenience really. The only real noteworthy upgrade is the new kickstand… which is nice, but not £310 nice.

Like I’ve been saying all along, you’ll get your sweet 4K DLSS goodness with Switch 2 and not before. Switch 2: March 2023. BOTW2, Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonetta 3 will be launch window titles that year. Book it.

It’s always right

Haven’t had a chance to watch the video yet, but no spec bump? If so… I was right again!

SGDQ 2021 has started! Cave Story 3D is VERY broken!

Worth noting the context behind Slalom though… it debuted as an arcade game on the Nintendo VS System (essentially a NES in an arcade cabinet); which explains its rather unforgiving game design. Fun fact, Slalom was the first western developed game for a Nintendo console! And also Rare’s first ever game, post Ultimate Play The Game (It was the reverse engineering project that landed Rare with a NES console license; and turned them into a console game maker!). Also David Wise’s first soundtrack too! It’s brutally difficult (as was the style at the time), but it’s a super technically impressive game for its time. Also it solidified what would go on to be Rare’s love, and obsession, for alliteration in their level names

God I love Skyward Sword. Every inch of it is so meticulously designed and handcrafted with love! It’s very much like Minish Cap in full 3D. It trades breadth for depth and it’s all the better for it! Combat is first class as well. 10 years later and there’s still nothing that feels as “real” as Skyward Sword in that regard! And all of the puzzles are just tremendously good. Some of the very best dungeons in the series! And the way that they play around with your knowledge of each of the three main overworld areas throughout the game is incredible! The level design is just out of this world! Amazing game! Can’t wait to replay it on Switch!

OMG!! Dicey Dungeons is just SICK! This game is the tits!! If you even remotely enjoy roguelikes and enjoy fun? You owe it to yourself to play this game!!
-
Ahh. Remember when Zelda used to have handcrafted level design, divine music, interesting characters & settings and wonderful gameplay that captivated you and made you feel something amazing? Remember when Zelda wasn't just generic Ubisoft open world sludge? Yeah, I do too.

Agreed. We're really entering Endgame now as far as this industry goes. The winner will be the one that secures the most developers and game content for their services; just like what's happening with TV/streaming and the movie induistries. Unfortunately, I don't think Nintendo has a chance in this game really. They're gonna end up going it alone again; but their partners who they rely on (especially Tecmo Koei) are gonna get eaten up if they don't hurry up and start putting rings on fingers pretty soon...
