two Wii games against four ps3 and 360 games
-
it's a game. would you prefer a game to be unplayable as long as it's realistic? i'l take gameplay first thankyouverymuch... i loved the first desert storm in multiplayer, not the most realistic, but a nice balance. i don't want a game that is much more realistic than that if it means i have to sacrifice gameplay! and i think with the controller options, if implemented well, then yes people intending to buy Wii will be interested in CoD and lots of other similar games, as well as the brand new genres. after all, the controller has the ability to really shake up old genres.

maybe they were drinking some "red red wine" when they named it.... apologies...

came across this interview on IGN with the developers of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for Wii. yeh sure, it's another marvel game and as such hasn't generated much hype with us (and it won't be online unfortunately) but have a read at these coupla snippets! seems like the developers have actually, gameplay-wise, made the Wii version the best outta the whole lot, and are really innovating, especially the camera system if it works! have a read... -- "IGN Wii: What do you think of Wii? Evan Skolnick: We've had an excellent experience working with Nintendo and the Wii. IGN Wii: Obviously, the huge appeal to the Wii is the controller. How is the Wii controller going to be used? Can you give us the 411 on what sets Marvel: Ultimate Alliance Wii apart from the other versions? Evan Skolnick: We have five gestures that do a large variety of things in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. For example, you can shake the Wii remote side to side to fire web bullets with Spider-Man or you can thrust the remote forward to make Wolverine leap forward, pounce on an enemy and beat them into the ground. All the playable characters have four to five super powers that are performed with different gestures. In other versions of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, you can only do two powers at a time and are required to remap powers to do the remaining three. With the gesture system designed for the Wii, you can do any super power at any time simply by performing the gesture for that power. Another major difference is that we do not require button combos to perform finishing attacks like Popup, Trip and Stun. Instead, you can lift the remote up to do a Popup that sends the enemy flying upwards, swipe the remote left or right to trip the enemy or you can lower the remote down to do a stun attack that temporarily dazes your opponent. In most cases, doing a gesture in a direction will cause your hero to attack in a direction similar to the gesture. Also, a Wii-specific feature is that you can use the nunchuck's tilt sensors to rotate the game camera without having to take your hands off the movement or attack controls as you do with a standard game pad. This feels very natural and intuitive and works so smoothly that you easily control the camera even during intense action. In addition to our gesture-based gameplay, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance has two additional playable characters who are exclusive to the next generation platforms. IGN Wii: Nintendo's goal is obviously to set itself apart from the competition. That being said, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance doesn't have the luxury (from a design perspective) of being a Wii-specific game. Is there really enough of a chance on the development side to focus on a modified design? When working on a licensed game like this, are the differences Wii presents more of a blessing or a curse for developers? Evan Skolnick: We did not set out to modify the game design of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance - it is the same game as the other console platforms. What sets the Wii version apart, however, is the way the player interacts with the game. We spent countless hours designing, prototyping and testing various concepts to make the best use of the Wii's incredible controllers as they could be applied to a complex, deep, super hero-based RPG. That said, there were some modifications to the game design that resulted directly from the particulars of the Wii control scheme. One important way that we modified the design for the Wii was to allow players to perform Popups, Trips and Stuns at anytime without having to remember the button combo that triggers these moves. This makes the combat feel more super powered and gives the player a feeling of deeper interactivity that cannot be felt with a non-revolutionary controller. IGN Wii: Will the Wii version be released alongside the other versions? Can we expect Marvel: Ultimate Alliance to fit into the Wii launch window? Evan Skolnick: Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is planned to be a launch title for the Wii. IGN Wii: A huge debate going around right now is the Wii software price. When it all comes down to it, it really is up to the publisher. Can you tell us how you'll be pricing Marvel: Ultimate Alliance? Evan Skolnick: As far as I know, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for the Wii has a suggested retail price of $49.99." -- personally, i love the way the fighting seems to work, that'll it'll be much less start-stop than other versions, making you actually feel like a "super hero" as he says lol! and the way the camera works! if they nail that with the tilt sensors and it actually works properly, this could set a benchmark for other similar games, and could make a huge difference in the genre, you think?

in fairness, something like Cars doesn't look good on any system it's come out on (well perhaps the DS one looks quite good in motion) the GC, PS2, Xbox, PC and PSP versions all look awful. the spongebob game looks nice in motion, and let's not forget how it plays it's been the focus of a weekly update on IGN, a lot of people seem impressed at how well it uses the controller in various configurations. so i'll give that game the benefit of the doubt graphically until it is released and played. as for the rest, THQ are promising better graphics, in the meantime let's not forget that these games are still works in progress, they are simply nailing the control first, and seem to be doing an excellent job of it to! also, remember everyone banging on about how we didn't want straight ports, would anyone use the controller properly? "we don't care about graphics, just make sure they use the controller"? THQ are fully embracing the wiimote with every one of these titles, and they must be commended for that. but all of a sudden a lot of people don't care about that and are judging games simply by unfinished graphics! why?! have we really gone back to those days already?! give them the benefit of waiting till they are released, i'm pleased the controller is being embraced! did you even read the whole thread?! they are GC screens, mostly unfinished GC screens! you can't judge their Wii versions based on that!!

i understand ur points, and i'm sure the scientists think they know but surely how a system is formed is theory. i doubt we actually know an awful lot about up there, and that much of it is based on theories on top of theories, after all we're not up there yet... really. so for me all the arguing going on within the scientific community is mute to me, as i'm a strong believer that we know squat about what's in (and life in) space. i think i know some "people" who don't seem to like that idea very much...

i am reminded of two quotes: "A wise man once said, that a person trying to know something about everything, will eventually know everything about nothing. And that a person trying to know everything about one thing, will eventually know nothing about everything." Harrison Blackwood (War Of The Worlds tv series) and: (roughly) "...didn't all you scientist types once think the world was flat... and didn't you also believe that the atom was the smallest thing, yeh, until you broke that open and a whole buncha crap came out." Pheobe (Friends)

sounds sssooo much like my mate's gf.... yet he lets her get away with it, but comes to us bitching about her... :S anyhoo, back on subject...

they said that these are just GC games, they haven't been upgraded graphically yet, just control-wise. i can't say anything about the others but the spongebob game looks a lot better in video form, that screenshot does it no justice, looks blocky there.

everyone gets to that stage where they just can't live at home anymore. i reached that stage where my mother and i just couldn't stand each other being under the same roof. we'd shout, stomp off in anger etc etc etc then i decided to move out. i moved to the city and yes it is tough to begin with, but now i'm all settled and my mother and i are getting on fantastically. i can confide in her like i never could before, she's like a great dear friend as well as my mum! i found it very expensive living on my own though, tried sharing with a friend but it didn't work out, now i'm living in shared accomodation. applied for it thru a newspaper. i viewed some right dumps b4 i found this house, and no i'm not living with students (advert stated no students) you don't have to settle for loud partying students in shared houses, so it's great. i've been VERY lucky in finding four people that i get on with so much, and being strangers when i first moved in makes it easier i think than moving in with people you know. strange that. (they're all girls too... which makes it nice too lol)

shows how much i know! didn't even know pluto wasn't a planet anymore lol! we're so insignificant when u compare r wee planet to the vastness of space, seems silly these scientists are arguing over what they'll call them. haven't they got better things to do, and just leave it the way it was...?

ah right okey-dokey. i mean, i know a lot of this stuff is speculation, but sometimes i do feel it is being stated as fact and some people might not know better. same goes for personal opinion (like if the wavebirds would fit or the friends codes) nice to know you agree. it's gonna be slow? and what do you base this supreme forecast on? mystic meg? -

only immature idiots are gonna do that. the rest of the world won't care, they might see the connection initially but anyone with a modicom (sp?) of common sense will not put the two together like the aforementioned idiots will. let's face it, the people who will make those jokes i'm sure wouldn't be the type to buy it anyway, no mater the name, so i'm sure nintendo aren't worried. neither am i. i think the name will help. and in america "yahoo" means a crazy person or something like that doesn't it? (help me out here lol) and to say "i'll google it later", i mean that sounds bizarre but no one cares. cheers takeo -

 haven't you read the previews? it plays much like the original games, unlike the atrocious 3D games. it's taking sonic back to his roots. looking forward to it, but preferred the original name, suited the speed of the game better i think.

each to their own, but working in GAME, a LOT of people are asking what it is, and the name doesn't even bother them in the slightest. it intrigues them, and for heaven's sake "yahoo"? "google"? we don't think twice about these now, same with Wii. i love the name, it's new and cool and it works. childish? pfft! the only people i think who will have a problem after it is launched will be fanboys of other consoles who can't think of anything else to criticise. normal people will either like it, or think it's weird initially and then come round like us. and if people say to you that they aren't gonna buy it coz of it's name, just laugh at them!! out loud!! :D they're losing out, not you. -
Couple of things struck me with the new Q&A section, and seeing how's there's no thread for it in the news, i thought i'd stick it here since it concerns Wii... The first was this: Hey! Do you think its possible that the Wii online service will allowe voice-chat with people you dont know? I really hate the system NIntendo have made with NDS. Jim, 17 Currently, I doubt it, Nintendo is hard core with this friend code rubbish. if you look at everything ninty has released about the wifi service for wii they are still being very secretive. if they were just gonna throw out the same system as the DS they would have said by now. personally, i think the WFC in place now is perfect for handheld gaming, with Wii yes it'll need some changes. i like the idea of having an online profile so people can see what you're playing, but i'm sure ninty aren't about to copy microsoft completely and will put their own spin on the idea (the rumoured in-built camera maybe could be used to place Wii Sports Tennis-like facial images onto ur profile...?). on Wii, yes you should be able to meet strangers and play, like the way "rivals" works on metroid hunters... this way you can place people on ur rivals list and play them again, and if so you could add them automatically to ur friends list. personally, i don't understand why people think it's a good idea to be able to speak to entire strangers the first time you ever play them?!?! i don't want swearing and stuff happening online while i'm playing, and i'm sure a lot of older players and those new to this won't either. but the option would be there to add strangers and open up your profile to them and vice versa, if you so wished. so people who wana use only codes will be happy, and those who don't will be chuffed too...? given that the DS is played online by new gamers of all ages and young children, i think the friends codes is a good idea. keep it for Wii, but expand it so you can pick and choose which strangers you add to ur lists. having >>only<< the ability for >>anyone<< that you didn't even choose for ur list to curse and give off to you down the connection is a bad bad bad idea. have it as an option, not standard. Secondly: Hi, I just wondered if you knew if Wavebird controllers would be compatible with the Wii without using the Wavebird's receiver? (eg does the Wii have built-in 2.4ghz receivers) I am only wondering as on this picture of the Wii:- http://www.cdrinfo.com/images/uploaded/Nintendo_Revolution1.jpg there doesn’t appear to be enough space to close the flap with the Wavebird receivers plugged in. Also, I wondered if you knew if the GameCube memory cards would fit under the flap with it closed? I am just thinking it would be a shame to spoil the lovely design of the Wii if the flap has to remain open in order to use GameCube Memory cards/Wavebirds! Thanks Robert, 23 I have said before that the current Wavebird receivers will not fit into the Wii ports. Nintendo has stated that the controllers will be compatible. The only way I can see this happening is if there is inbuilt receivers. The memory cards will stick out just like on the GCN, so the flap will have to remain open. look at the image stated above (http://www.cdrinfo.com/images/uploaded/Nintendo_Revolution1.jpg) and you can see that the GCN ports aren't exactly centered inside the flap, they are off to one side. surely this is accomodate wavebird receivers. they would fit no problem. and having to keep the flap open doesn't bother me, after all to play any GCN game you're gonna have to anyway coz the standard controllers are wired.

sounds like ur dad is the rare exception to the rule these days. wii bashing is indeed over. -
really? then this guy knows his business! nice to have all these well-known and knowledgable developers backing nintendo

lol. you see, it's bulls**t conspirators who just wana make up the most extreme s**t that makes everyone who is suspicious look like a moron. lol. good find tho.

lol :P looking back on this thread, i have to say it's nice to have an adult conversation with online people about such topics. (sorry if i came across as some nut-job to begin with, but hopefully iv reworded myself ok.) certain other nintendo forums aren't so lucky...

there is nothing here to state that the wifi for Wii is exactly the same as for DS. if it were they woulda given out a lot more details by now. the WFC as it is is perfect for handheld gaming but yes it needs certain changes for Wii.... have faith and don't worry my friend, reggie IS calling the others competitors, the whole "not really competitors" stance was more about making a point about how different ninty's approach is since the success of the DS and now with the upcoming Wii too. and nintendo are all too aware of the lack of space for their products (anyone else get the email questionaire few months back about this very subject?). again, this is being addressed, look at how the DS sections are growing, coming to the front of stores etc. what sells gets more space, and the GCN just didn't sell well here in the UK unfortunately. the DS is the start of the wheel turning and the Will will bring it around completely i feel. (was gonna say "the Wii will bring it round a full 360" but that may have confused things lol)
