  1. R_A; Most of the threads I've locked in the past are either due to spam (some bot signs up to the boards and tries to sell us blinds), replication (already a similar thread) or will likely lead to a largely negative attitude, perhaps ripe for a stupid revoltion (i.e. the thread has been made purely to stir shit). I think that, as a mod, I feel more of a drive to get discussions going. I do agree that there needs to be a home for detritus -- and I guess from now on if I can't rip something interesting or copy the post into a new thread I'll just make a new thread and link to the post in question.
  2. [don'trateme]Ash; After 52 peeps I ran out of characters so I couldn't list people. It's over 60 people by now, too...[/don'trateme]
  3. We should keep a note of who is defending who, here!
  4. Chrismas is a time for giving and receiving rubbish gifts, drinking in the early afternoon (ok not novel for me), arguing over monopoly and spending hours and hours on the cooking only to have forgotten the yorkshire puds. Last year I spent it alone (and had a rather good time - would've been better if I hadn't forgotten the yorkshire puds. Three christmases before that I was in charge of cooking the xmas dinner. This year I'm going to Bournemouth, so again it'll be a wholely new christmas experience. It'll be my first christmas with 'kids' around since I was a kid myself - only a 2-month old baby but still what christmas means to me is going to change in focus from now. Christmas serves its duty well - brightens up a generally depressing time of year.
  5. Vote: Maddog. Ell if you're the crow's nest-man then perhaps we should reconsider as the write-up suggests that character did not see what really happened.
  6. I don't know what weather forecasts you normally check, but the met office has been saying it'd be a light snow here in brighton today for 5 days. They're undecided whether it's going to be light snow/heavy snow/sleet tomorrow, and my dad's got a plane to catch so his hol's up in the air. I don't mind if all the parcels don't arrive. It'll just spread the joy of christmas
  7. My imagined victors; Copenhagen v Chelsea Marseille v Manchester United Arsenal v Barcelona Lyon v Real Madrid Inter v Bayern Munich Valencia v Schalke AC Milan v Tottenham Roma v Shakhtar Donetsk I'd love for Spurs to progress, but their performance against an out-of-form chelsea the other day casts doubts.
  8. And in your name!
  9. Yeah I'm past really, really caring now, despite what the wall of text may suggest. I miss the old HWYD as much as anyone else, I just think this thread is a bit of a lame duck in comparison.
  10. Well we have days of the week dedicated to nordic gods we don't believe in, months of the year for roman emperors we don't especially revere, so it's a moot point :P We still have the Yule Log! Like a regular chocolate log but with and added coating of chocolate with a grain pattern to make it look like... a log.
  11. I've tried to lead by example. I don't mind just thread ripping but too often people talk about two thread-worthy things. I'll just start to copy/move posts. I was just a bit annoyed last night because we had a page of really diverse things to talk about, but the OP hadn't expanded very much. I saw potential threads in them. Nolan - M11x shipped (no idea what that is) - angry shipping thread ipaul - Slept in for lectures, found out they were cancelled anyway. - 101 reasons why sleep is better than everything else. -Plane tickets arrived for me to go home this evening. - Where have you been in the world? We've not had a travel thread. nightwolf - uni over - Uni flies, huh? A brief essay on how uni has changed her so far, and a question posited to other uni students to reflect on their years at uni. Fish - job offers abroad - What's it like working in these countries? or just generally asking what the countries are like will' - Food/mates night - What do you and your mates do? - summarise any routines you have with your bestest mates, or how often do you see your mates. Paj Meen Ah - ... - drunk/whipping already exist :P Cube - last day of work this year - How do you plan to finish 2010? and so on, and so on. Anything can be a thread, but the best threads are the ones that give info to begin with, then ask an interesting question that is worth answering. People should see a new thread as a chance to really talk about themselves, in the OP especially. If a new thread is a bit hmmmm it'll still get a few replies and the OP would learn from it. If it gets locked or gets no replies at all then that's another matter - but if I thought it wouldn't generate any discussion (e.g. it was just "I just woke up." in the OP then there's no element of discussion, merely a statement) then I could just move it to this thread. I just think that people are missing out a little.
  12. So much win potential But if your mate is blonde then you're wearing the wrong colours!!
  13. ... That's probably the most insane match I've ever had. Glad for the points and glad my striker's woken up! Not exactly sitting safe and sound at the moment, so tuesday's game will be as crucial as ever. Jimbob - I got an invite, too. I don't have a clue what it's about.
  14. The problem with christmas buying is that I constantly stumble across things that I want. Every search for a gift for a friend or family member, especially online irrevocably leads to me seeing something I want. Shorty's main argument is that someone might get this for you, so why get it? My argument is that the shit I want - games and dvds primarily - my social circle is unaware of my catalogue. I'm sorted for 7/10 people, yet I've bought myself three things. I would love for others to buy them for me but either for the point I made previously or because I've discovered it on some distant or discreet website, i know i won't get it. Christmas is an inevitable time for self-buying. Ultimately we always feel we are the easiest person to buy for, but for whatever reason it simply is not true.
  15. I never realised how truly awesome Star Trek: The Next Generation was. For a long time there was an anti-geek force field preventing me from watching it, then slowly my scanners showed my geek levels had not only risen by 40% over the last 4 years but also that my openness-to-awesome deflector sheilds were failing. I've run out of stupid stuff. Season 3 and 4 of star trek has, so far, been really, really, really, really good stuff. Episodes of ingenuity are all over the place, and of course there's the soap-opera factor of just generally falling in love with the characters. Oh wait this isn't the rate the last tv show thread! In that case the best thing for me was a surprise xmas dinner with dad and the step-mum (she's not been able to deal with that fact for over 20 years) with some wine and talks of aliens and sociial malfunctions. Six cans of cider doesn't hurt either. This thread needs to be locked. It's not HWYD and it truly stops new talk. Shame people can't sit and thing for a second "hmm... Now, I could post about that one good thing in that one thread, or I could spend a few more seconds pondering how to turn that good thing into a discussion and just make a new thread!" People may accuse me of doing the very thing I am against with this post -- but then, I've made more interesting threads than you so clearly I'm following the described principle more than you. And also this post was primarily made to make this point, so a new thread making this point would be a ridiculous idea.
  16. Contrary to the best thing to happen to me the other day, I just made an EPIC mistake on a chess match. This dude had a king and a rook vs my king, queen and pawn and he refused to resign for like 15 moves. Eventually I get it down to his king vs. my queen/king. I play the only possible move on the board to make a FUCKING STALEMATE! AAAAAAAAAAH. He spent two days pissing me off by not resigning then I go and make that move?! Like my best thing... the other day, this guy was waaay above me skill-wise so I guess it'll be a true reflection of my abilities... but FUCK, man! Never play chess drunk. Never play chess with people who do not understand that they're SUPPOSED to resign... But then I guess if you don't resign you may get lucky and get a draw. And now we will have a rematch and he'll proper thrash me. Chess ftw.
  17. Mirror's Edge was a brilliantly novel concept when it first arrived. I foolishly played it on the harder setting first time through - while trying to not fire a single bullet. Ruined the game for me completely.
  18. For some reason I have a vague possible memory that you said you borrowed Darksiders off Dan/someone at work or something. Perhaps dreamt it. In one of my more thrilling dreams, of course. Conservative estimate of £235 for 22 games is equal to... £4.50 a week. Shorty - if we combine smoking and gaming then we spend the same amount every week! :P Technically a fair proportion of my 'salary' mind you!
  19. Ths poll is crap because my favourite game(s) was a) knocked out in round [x] or b) not even listed!
  20. wewannaseeee!
  21. I remember when Paj thought he couldn't get drunk.
  22. heroicjanitor; but the argument is stupid. There is no best random person to vote for when you don't know what the election even does. It's stupid.
  23. How much do you guys spend? What sort of proportion of your income is it?
  24. I like how I've learned to tell the diff between you and chair when one of you changes your sig. I must say that both sig and av look a little like someone photobombing a professional photoshoot, but composition is good! 7/10. I've been considering a new sigav combo for a while. This must've been my longest running pair. I'm immensely proud of the 'hidden' message but everyone thinks it's jack skellinton.
  25. Is it because your grandad already has an xbox..? I'd've thought wii (and maybe wii fit) offers a better range of games to suit?
