Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection
darksnowman replied to Helmsly's topic in Nintendo Gaming
Thanks for sharing all the info. Great summary. Not shooting the messenger here but this collection (and the people behind it) has gone severely down in my estimations now. Clearly they were so preoccupied with whether slowdown could be turned off, they didn't stop to think if it should. -
Just did the present day. Thought my estimated total time was shaping up to be ~30 hours but that's put me back on track for the touted 20-25. There's the seed of a cool concept there but err, yeah, seemed like an idea they had knocking about that was just thrown in to make up the numbers. Noticed a tip that looks like it could be hinting at a boss. Pretty vague though. No way will I remember it for next time so it'd be nice if these things carry over into a new game +. I'm going to check the tips for the present day and if there's the slightest hint of something hidden there I'll eat my hat. There was a good amount of spot the sci-fi reference. It was the first chapter I saw out, so I took the boss seriously and whittled away what I assumed were its minions before getting to it. Thought doing it in that order helped reduce the threat of the boss but maybe I could have just stood there and whaled on it going by what you're saying. The boss music peaked for me here too. It seemed to fit the battle so well (the visuals, the setting, the face-off between those characters, it being the only (proper) battle in the chapter--I was pumped up) and now hearing it recycled at the end of every chapter in different settings, it's quickly lost its lustre. Think I've decided I'm keeping the wild west for last. Reckon I'll take them up on the option of renaming the character in that one when I get to it... well, unless the default name is amazing. So next I'll jump back to prehistory, then to the future, and back to the west.

I've wrapped up all three from the demo now. Two of them took some unexpected turns however the shinobi chapter was becoming a bit of pain due to the mazy layout of it. I was just kind of glad to get that one over with, which is a pity. The way one of the tunes kicks off reminded me of 65000000 BC in Chrono Trigger so that was jarring, haha. I'll launch into an all-new character next. Reading here that there are optional bosses that are also secret bosses has got me wondering what I've missed so far. Thought I was being reasonably thorough, tbh. I'll have to check the Gameplay Tips to see if there's any mention. Not sure how new game+ works in this but it'd be nice to carry over what you have to make it easier to go for these bosses on the next go around.

3DS and Wii U eShop purchases to end March 2023
darksnowman replied to Helmsly's topic in Nintendo Gaming
The virtual console is always alluring. Might be worth factoring in that at least if you get them on 3DS it's different to just having access to them via the NSO sub and its whims. I'm still keeping an eye on the sale section. Full game-wise, I'm considering Luigi's Mansion 2 as by the time I was getting around to wanting it, I only ever saw the player's choice box. Previously, you shared a link to a list of games with DLC. Do you know if there's there an easy way to review what the DLC is? I've checked a few by inserting carts and going to DLC via the in-game menus but something more straightforward would be handy. Like, I'm wondering if I should nab the Fantasy Life DLC just in case I ever fancy going back to it, and I'd like to know if there's anything similar to that for my other games. I'm not wanting to buy potion packs if you catch my drift. -
Seems I could be throwing caution to the wind with chapter selection order based on how @martinist and @Glen-i have set about tackling living these lives. I went straight in and finished off the clank's chapter. The events that occur from where the demo left off... holy moly. At one point, I had an idea of who could be behind it, then I talked myself out of it, only for it to come (half) true. There was a stretch where I thought it was erring a wee bit on the boring side as all you seemed to be doing was: talk to someone/ the group they leave the room go find them talk to them/ the group again they leave the room go find them and so on. But as with most of these things, by the time it was wrapping up an attachment had grown and I look back on it as a decent visual short story sort of thing. Next up, I reckon I'll continue one of the other remaining two from the demo.

@Ike I was sure leg strap use was part of previews and reviews. Absolutely. The bolded bit is key.

N-E Mario Kart 8 DX Get Together (Theme Night this week)
darksnowman replied to Glen-i's topic in Nintendo Gaming
No Bowsers were bashed in the making of this video. -
I'd guess it means they can get the game out the door quicker to start making cash back on it quicker. Then like you say, it helps get eyeballs back on it again when they grace us with these generous free updates. Nothing whatsoever against free updates, just don't like the "ship the thing and we'll add it later!" starting point they seem to come from.

"I'd worry more about cleaning up your Avalanche skills first." Yeeeeeooo.

Thanks, everyone. That was great. -
Just wondering if you followed the link to see the selected games before sharing that... Bonanza indeed.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses (26th July 2019)

Now you mention it, I think I read you saying that in the Conquest thread. Not an easy task for me to imagine playing FE without the peril of wondering if I'm going to be crit'd to death at any moment, and need to restart the encounter. What's the cost/ penalty for doing so? -

Sounds like you've made great time on that. Assuming characters going down in battle is final, have they added a restart battle option or are you still having to reset the game? -
Possession predictions for tonight's match? 80-20?

I could kind of see where you're coming from if I hadn't just finished the game in a matter of days so I'll have to beg to differ as in my experience it was short and fairly breezy. Actually, I wouldn't have minded if it lasted me another few days! Imo there was a good mix of levels that took a minute or two versus others that had me scratching my head and mentally reverse engineering a route. There was probably only one level it felt unexplained which I put down to me not having spotted an interaction previously. Otherwise, exploring different options and toying with the pull of gravity was made easy thanks to the rewind button which rarely left me reaching for the reset button. As I alluded to, there were occasions I felt I reached the exit through suboptimal means (rewinding and tweaking it to manoeuvre the character with extreme precision) but I got there nonetheless. In some ways, I was reminded of Donkey Kong ('94) and Mario v DK as I played. I think for an indie game to have me recall those indicates it's probably on the right track. Perhaps you were nodding off with motion controls enabled which left it all topsyturvy when you woke up with the controller lolling off to the side.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses (26th July 2019)

Everfrost Peak... Walrus Cove... Snowball Valley... FROSTY VILLAGE. Yep, it's time to pull the blinds and play DKR until you're shivering. -
Loaded up another unplayed eShop purchase I pounced on one time it was on sale in years gone by. The Bridge. 2D puzzle game where you're goal is to get to the exit door. Easy to grasp. Sometimes you need keys, always you'll need to rotate the stage to utilise gravity and build momentum. Walls and ceilings are all potential floors. There are also some boulders to avoid (that look like the Chomp rocks in Yoshi's Island crossed with the moon from Majora's Mask), vortices to contend with, buttons to press, and some other bits and pieces get added into the mix as you go. Like all good puzzlers, it starts off basic and gradually turns the screw with each passing chapter. Before you realise it, the old grey matter has been eased through the gears, half the game is done and you're loading back in for the mirror stages. It wasn't until the last two levels of the first half that I found it taxing, then the back half got devious enough at points that I'm not even sure I got through some parts using the intended solution. With gravity and momentum being in play there could well have been different ways to get to the exits. Due to the hand-drawn style of the graphics (it's really nice looking), there are times when it can be difficult to discern what's foreground or background but if you find you've walked around half the stage just to be blocked off by a pillar, or tipped the level in a way that's left you floating off into oblivion, pressing and holding B rewinds the puzzle. So you can easily get back to where you want to diverge from your previous actions without needing to restart the whole thing from scratch. Pretty nifty. I've crossed the bridge though I didn't come away with all the achievements in this one. Still, definitely got my money's worth--this and Paratopic are very much examples of the kind of games I trawl through the eShop to unearth. Brisk and memorable. There's a demo if anyone wants to check it out.

Mario Strikers: Battle League Football
darksnowman replied to darksnowman's topic in Nintendo Gaming
Saw the vid on YouTube. Think this game needs more than three waves, tbh. Daisy: Technique, hard to barge over, should have been in the game from the start Shyguy: All-rounder Desert Ruin Stadium if that's your thing Knight gear: strength and shooting up Safe enough predictions. Would be nice if they continue to add to it beyond the confirmed three waves. -
You can only use what you have so if your wardrobe lends itself more to the Rab C Nesbitt or Onslow look, then, by all means, work away! Got the bunker kitted out nicely in advance.

Some WFH tips from me are to wear a sports t-shirt as the fabric will allow your body to breathe a bit and when having your breaks consider turning off your electronics to give them some downtime to cool off as well--even check your router and other things you wouldn't normally worry about to see how warm they are. Then in general, if you feel you're reaching the point where the heat is becoming unbearable, keep in mind you can hop in for a cool/ cold shower. Depending on your tolerance levels they're great (at all times of the year). Don't worry, it'll all be over soon.

Give them some credit. Your cats wouldn't just sit in the heat like a dog...

There was plenty that needed to be reworked. I think I found it more interesting at the beginning when you're getting a glimpse at what his life became before the call to action kicked in and it goes from naff to naffer on a scene-to-scene basis. It was a pity that most of the time I was laughing at it rather than getting invested in it. Perhaps what they went for would have worked in the Clone Wars style though I've just come away with a feeling of meh, why bother if this is the end product? If they take lessons from it as you say, then great. But if they just keep cranking these series out in this state... Episode I on the road to redemption. I'll never look at my Postman Pat tapes in the same way.
