  1. This whole thing was started because some analyist wrote that it could happen (the links on slash dot). The article is a load of tripe, and stinks of trying to influence market prices. The author knows hardly anything aout computers, and his argument boils down to: Nintendo wii and DS are white and stylish, Apple make stylish white things OMG they are merging!!!!111!!1!
  2. PLease don't tell me that automatic download was internet popup. First thing id do is remove windows defender from your computer using the add/remove programs thing in control panel. then get rid of any folders, any trace of it infact. Also clear your temp internet files (using internet explorer or disk cleanup) Windows defender definaterly sounds dodgy. Grab a copy of AVG (anti virus gold) and Ad-Aware from http://www.download.com. they are both free, and unlike norton don't ever run out. Run scans on both of them. Have you tried system restore, restoring to a point before you installed windows defender? I've got a feeling that its surely got something to do with this, so try and obliterate it from your system. Once your completely rid of it, try a system restore to a time before you downloaded it. (again instal avg and adaware, they are good programs to use). A copy of the error message you get would be useful, if this doesnt work. Hope that helps, post again if it doesnt
  3. So its a good thing i cant get sounds in flash and flv to play in linux?
  4. Yea higher number doesn't necissarilly mean its a better card. Your, 7300 is a series 7 card, but the lowest 7 series card. The 6800 (and its varients) are the best of the 6 series. You cant get a 6800 from ebuyer for around £120. The 7300LE is around £30, the 7800/7900 is around £200. The 6800 is a decent upgrade choice it was top of the range in the 6 series, but the price has dropped since the launchof the 7 series. So your getting a good cardfor a decent price. A X1600XT for around £100 isn't that bad either. JUst do a bit of research, price vs performance. take a gander at http://tomshardware.co.uk/graphics/index.html they have a useful "buyers guide" going on at the moment
  5. How much are you going to spend on a graphics card? That definaterly decided which one you should buy. I'd personally go ati, but it definaterly depends on what games you will be playing. Even though it shouldnt matter certain games are "sponsored" by one or the other, and usually have lower performance on the other. My Obvilvion box recommends an X800 ati, or nvidia 6800, so id probably reconmend those minimum if you want to run oblivion in most of its glory
  6. It will probably run oblivion, just not brilliantly, i'm running it on a radeon 9600. (there are a few tweaks that can dramatically increase performance). Half life 2 runs amazingly on almost everything, its one of the most optomised games ive ever played. If you want the full oblivion experience i'd rcommend upgrading. I appreciated the game without the flashy graphics, but it woul have been even more amazing with them.
  7. Hey, cheers for the help guys, I got XMMS working, it seems to be doing a decent job. Mplayer seems to be the type of thing i'm looking for, the only problem is that it won't configure so i cant comple it. It wont due to some error with the fact linux seems not to like my hardware. Ill give it a better go when i have some time,i should be revising at the moment. Cheers again, any other tips that might be useful when moving to linux?
  8. Hi, I've just started using linux (ubuntu), after using windows for almost a decade. Anyway, After much playing around wth drivers and such ive almost got most of it working, and am very impressed with linux as an operating system. Its stable, easyish to use, and as secure as anything could be. However, as great as the OS is, the software lets it down majorly, i can't seem to find a good music player, one with anywhere close to the functionallity of media player (and thats not brilliant). Same with Video playback. Anyway, i'm pretty much on the edge between my windows and linux dual boot. As much as i want to use linux, if i can't get the functionallity of parts of windows software thats useful, i may as well use windows all the time (instead of just gaming) The point being, is there anyone who uses linux that could point me in the direction of some good linux media software? or any other good software. Im on the edge, any other reasons that i should ditch windows would be great too. Cheers
  9. No-one seemed to be majorly hurt which is good, although I wouldnt recommend going back soon odwin, the article said the gas was full of ammonia. That place must smell absolutely rank now. I always hated that smell in chemistry. @The3rdChlidren - Cheers, i always though it was a bit plain/bland
  10. That oil one was massive though, i live in oxford atm, and i felt that thing go up, and i was 80 miles away. I remember going to search on the net straight after feeling it, as i though England had another one of its mini earthquakes. Is this one as large, or just because theres a load of things that shouldnt ever be contaminating the air floating around?
  11. I only go back every term break (easter, christmas etc), lugging a desktop home wouldn't be much harder than taing my laptop. As it is we have to clear our rooms between each term, so the amount of stuff i'd take wouldnt increase that much. (as im already taking pretty much everything else home on the train anyway). It does depend on alot on how your life-style will be at uni, for me home is about 170 miles away so i dont 'pop home'. As for space, a desktop is similar to, a laptop + external hard drive + external sound card + printer + speakers + all the other crap plugged into it. The point is he's buying a high nd laptop and wanting good graphics. He may as well get a desktop. The only time laptops are rerallyuseful is when you only want to check emails and write essays, and are moving it around. So id probably recommend buying a cheapish, ultra light/thin laptop for your work. All it needs to do is run word/open office, firefox/IE and windows/linux. but if he wants to play games, I'd definaterly recomend a desktop.
  12. I bought a laptop when i went to uni a 2 years ago, and i regrt buying one over a desktop. I never use my laptop as a laptop, i dont need to take it into the library becasue i do physics and theres no ned to use the library. I use my laptop as a desktop pretty much, and due to the lack of upgradability, its sat on my desk with laods of external devices stuck into it. It also needs a 12 inch fan pointed at in during summer so it doesnt overheat. (its a P4 3.2, 1Gb ram,128mb radeon 9600) Definaterly think about wether your going to use a laptop as a laptop, and wether you'd be better off buying a desktop. Because you know nothing about how your life at uni will be (i thought i'd take my laptop to lectures before i started, but i never have etc), its probably better to wait a month after you start and then buy a laptop/desktop based on what your lifestyles like.
  13. I start on the 13th June, Electromagnetism and Optics, Thermal Physics, Quantum Mechanics, and Financial Physics. Gotta revise like crazy, first uni exams that count to my degree.
  14. i buy a ticket every week, (luckydip) in thehopes i can get rid of my student loan. if prolly won £100 altogether, and spend about £300. but there always the hope that my student loan could disappear overnight. Actually i better go check last nights numbers...
  15. I don't really have any phobia's, i'd probably be scared by an axe weilding maniac or if someone pointed a gun at me (actually a knife wuld be worse). Do they count as phobias or are they rational. Clowns creep me out since i saw IT when was younger, seriously that film was scary as a kid. (i'm guessing rune also saw it)
  16. yea, i have to go out at at 5:30 and i get back in at 8:00, talk about bad timing (if i dont go my head will end up on a platter), where will offer the best quality download after (so i can set it up now and see any revelelations before i watch the conference)
  17. err guys: Although Sony did not note these changes in its pre-E3 press conference, printed material handed out by the company indicate that in addition to having a smaller hard drive, the $499 PS3 will not be able to read data from Sony memory sticks, SD or compact flash cards (a feature Sony touted Monday evening). Nor will it offer 802.11 b/g wireless compatibility. And perhaps most importantly to potential owners, the $499 PS3 will not have an HDMI output, which might prevent owners of recent high definition television sets from seeing the machine's lauded high definition graphics.
  18. cheers for the iki page, theres an ongoing battle going on there, mainly under the controller section.
  19. i think we need to wait for unbiased feedback from the people reviewing the controller. What it can and cannot do etc. only then will we find out to what extent dualshock 3 has copied the FHC
  20. all i saw that conference, were stolen ideas, not a single thing was origional, either stolen from microsoft or nintendo. However, xbox live will be the best online system out of the 2, because microsoft has already invested millions into it. The FHC will be better because nintendo developed it bcasue the wanted too, not because they wanted to steal it. they are selling something for $500 that does alot of things half arsed and a load of unorigional games. yes, people will buy it, and it will sell in millions, but im still going to buy wii, and thats all that matters to me
  21. 6 degrees refers to planes of motion, z, y and z. pitch, roll, and tilt. so according to sony it will detect its position in 3d space aswell and is rotation (ie same as FHC)
  22. Good point, i think especially for fsp, the FHC will be much more acurate. plus it wont cos $600
  23. well, we still have the fact the wii will have nintendo only games on, and the cheaper price. oh and the moral high ground
  24. omg, i never thought they'd actually do it
  25. its a dual shock with a cell chip in
