  1. With February starting it's time to finish the game, which I did just now! I completed the game with 2 treasures missing, which let me to a grand total of...

    wario3.png

How much of a castle does that get you? Well, a modest Feudal Japanese palace it seems.

I went back to pick up the final two treasures for completionist goals, so consider the game done and dusted for now!

I agree with what's been said above. The game does hold up still, and you already see some of the wackiness that will show in later Wario games. It is a transition game, with the more traditional powerups but it's own pacing and set of enemies.

I'll write another instalment of Throwback Thursday for this one, so it would be great if I can grab some quotes from this topic! So if you have more to say, say it! Although I'm already happy with what you've all written. Cool to see almost everyone seems to like the game as well.

    Onwards to February!

Last time, in August, the indie highlights was on August 20th, Nindie Showcase (US) was on August 28th. So if it happens (and why shouldn't it?), it could take place as early as next week.

Wasn't that because there were two game events happening? The Gamescom in Europe and one I forgot the name of in the US, and the Highlights tied in with these.

Anyway, some nice titles there! Wargroove looks good. I only wish it wasn't in a fantasy setting but rather in a modern war setting. But I think that would make it even more of an Advance War rip-off. :D

Double Kick Heroes, damn, that game is for me! Rhythm, zombies and heavy metal. Curious to see what the licensed tracks are going to be. Inmost also looks interesting. Another pixel game, but I like the dark setting.

Unruly Heroes strongly reminded me of Rayman Legends art-wise and gameplay-wise. Won't be getting it though. Crosscode looks like too much of a chaos. Goat Simulator, I know that from PC and although fun to watch, I don't feel the need to play it.

  3. So I've started Wario Land last weekend. I've located my Gameboy cartridges, but failed to find batteries for my Gameboy. I figured it would be more cost-efficient to buy the game on the 3DS than to go out to get batteries, especially with the 30% discount on My Nintendo.

It feels great to play this game again. It's also funny how your brain works. Some trivial things I remembered (like a secret room in a Mt. Teapot level) but I forgot for example how the world map changes sometimes, or how most of the bosses looked like.

If there is a bad thing to say about the game then it's that Wario (if not wearing the Jet) plays quite slow. It's also too bad not more is done with the power-ups gameplay wise. The fact that you can hook your Viking helmet into the ceiling could have created some fun scenarios.

Other than that it is a lovely game to play. It has the typical Wario quirkiness and attitude, cool power-ups and a nice variation of worlds. I'm currently in the final world, although I do have some backtracking to do.

  4. So how is everything feeling about the "war" between all PC gaming clients? Both GOG and Epic are trying to pilfer marketshare from Steam with better margins for the publishers and by giving away free games.

In the last couple of weeks I've got Soma, Super Meat Boy, Subnautica and A Story About My Uncle for free. Destiny I've received earlier, and also Ubisoft has given away games for free before. Good news for the consumer. Or is it? I now have: GOG, Epic, uPlay, Origin, Battle.net, LoL launcher and Steam installed.

Right now I don't mind installing another launcher to get a free game. But I only put money in two of them (and I got a code for an Origin game so okay let's count that as well). The positive aspect is that there is competition, which means prices should go down, and already we are getting some games for free.

The downside I have now is that I have to update all these clients. They don't boot up on startup, I don't want 6 clients running in the background. But the clients need updating and the games need updating. So that means somehow figure out a cycle to keep everything updated, or run the risk of having to download a substantial update for a game I want to play.

The other downside is that there will be some platform exclusives. It isn't bothering me that much as I don't buy that many games on PC, but if the franchises I like get splintered over different platforms that's not a situation I would like. To be honest I was quite happy with Steam being my only source.

  5. Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor wario land super mario land 3 gif

    Publisher: Nintendo
    Developer: Nintendo
    Released: 1994
    System: Game Boy
Available on: Game Boy, Nintendo 3DS

We first encountered Wario in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins as the antagonist and final boss. In Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 he takes on the lead part though, in a quest for money to buy as big a castle as possible. The ending varies depending on the amount of cash and treasures you have, the more you've collected the bigger your castle. It would be cool if everyone can get a photo up of their ending screen and compare castles. You know, settle the old "mine is bigger than yours" debate.

It's a very solid 2D platformer that sets the tone for later Wario 2D games. We already played Wario Land 4 so if you've never played this one, it's nice to see where his roots are. It was the first game I got for my Game Boy, along with Kirby's Dream Land. So there is a lot of nostalgia involved, which means this may as well end up as a new Throwback Thursday on the front page!

First things first though: Where on earth did I leave my Game Boy cartridges? Ehhhrm... *wanders off searching boxes*

  6. So the votes have been tallied, and the current result is:

    #1 Super Mario Land - 1 vote

    #2 Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins - 2 votes

#3 Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 - 3 votes

I haven't voted yet myself I see, which is ehm, not too smart. :p I wanted to vote for Wario Land anyway, so if my vote counts or not, Wario Land it is!

I'll make the topic for it soon!

  7. @Fierce_LiNk I personally really enjoy playing it. I have to say I'm not into guitar tech. I never played a bass more expensive than say €500, and I haven't played a lot of different basses. But for the price (I think I've payed around €300-350 for the Thunderbird) it is amazing. I went out to try it because of the looks, but it plays great as well. It is a bit top-heavy but that doesn't bother me. It has a decent set of elements in it for as far as I can judge, and the build quality is good. And it looks so damn rock 'n roll.

The shop owner also said it is good value for money and I can only agree. If I compare it with the Dean 5-string I have, that has a warmer, more full sound. But the Epiphone plays smoother, faster so I prefer that one. I think it's a safe bet as it is a bass that quite a lot of people use, it's recognizable and Epiphone is quite good in their price range. I don't really know other guitars in that price range which I would recommend as I don't have the experience. There are some Squier Jazz Bass or Precision Bass going in that price range if you want another popular model. But I love my Thunderbird!

Oh by the way the one I have is the Thunderbird IV VSB with the bolted on neck and passive elements. You also have the more luxurious Thunderbird Pro, which has a neck-through and I think active elements. If you want just a bit more.

  8. I think that Big Sale has ended, it ran until January 3. There is a new sale however, mostly Nintendo-published titles like ARMS, Splatoon 2 and indeed MK8 Deluxe. Splatoon's Octo Expansion is on sale as well, may pick that up.

  9. Allright, time for the January games! I think it's time to bring out the:

Big grey Brick of Joy, it's the original Game Boy! Well, it will be the Pocket for me as my original one is a little busted. So stock up on batteries, slam on that magnifying glass and make sure you have a lamp nearby.

As for the games, let's go with a theme here. Of course you all probably have played all these games to bits, but I haven't touched them in a while. They are rather short as well so it may be nice to do a short inbetweener after your previous ordeal.

Let's get voting! I think we usually do a week, so vote before the 10th of January!

563 Gold coins at the moment, and I don't think that number is going to increase. I do have two second-hand games laying around that I haven't played yet, but I think the person before me already claimed the gold coins. Guess it wasn't final, bought 2 more games in the sale and my 2018 Final Score is 661. I did spend some coins somewhere this year already so it's not a total accumulation.

  11. I had my eye on Everspace, but €40 is way too steep a price for me. So I picked up Manticore: Galaxy on Fire instead, currently on sale. Let's see if that can satisfy my space shooting fix. And picked up Shantae: Half-genie Hero, loved The Pirate's Curse so this should be good.
