Yeah I've used the Tanooki suit to help get me past that section a few times.... but somehow I just keep frakking up at the water bit regardless

So with the Winter Olympics starting next week I thought a thread might be in order. Opening Ceremony is Friday the 7th, live coverage starts on BBC2 at 3.30pm Anyone else here looking forward to watching some winter sports? I'm looking forward to the Bobsled/Skeleton/luge, Snowboarding, Biathlon, Ice Hockey, Speed Skating and Skiing events. Really happy to see Jamaica have qualified in the 2-man Bobsled event, here's hoping for some Cool Runnings! from them haha. Think they had a issue with raising money to actually get to the event after they qualified but I think they got that sorted now through a combination of crowdfunding, donations and I think I read somewhere Samsung stepped in with sponsorship too. What I found a bit annoying bout that whole thing though is I don;t think the Jamaican Olympic Commitee (or whatever they are called) even offered to fund them. Now I might be wrong but I'd assume given how successful they are at the summer games I'd expect they would have money in reserve that could have easily funded the Bobsled team? But the main thing is they got their funding anyway and will compete. Hope they do well, would be awesome to see them push for a medal and we might get a Cool Runnings 2 then haha. For my own Irish point of view we've got 5 athletes qualifed. 2 in Alpine Skiing (1 man 1 woman), 1 guy in cross country skiing, 1 guy in the Skeleton and 1 guy who qualifed for both halfpipe and slopestyle in teh snowboarding. I have no idea if any of them are considered "contenders" for medals, but hopefully even if not they give it a good effort. Would be awesome to see them get even one medal as we've not yet had a medal at the Winter Olympics, haha, still waiting for our first! Also interestingly spotted my mothers and wifes country, Philippines, have one athlete qualifed (their first winter olympian since 1992) in the mens figure skating so I might keep tabs on him too. Also does anyone know which channels will be showing live events? I checked the Sky Guide for next Friday to see which channels were showing the Openig Ceremony and only BBC2 have it listed, very disappointed our own national broadcaster (RTE) aren't airing it, not even on delay, and very surprised to see Eurosport aren't showing it either. In fact Eurosport don't seem to be covering much of anything with out a few 30min highlight shows listed for the Saturday I'm assuming though maybe BBC will have all their coverage on the "red button" feeds...least I hope so, didn't see any other listings for the WInter Games live or otherwise on the sky guide. (NOTE: I know there's been a fair bit of controversy surrounding these games with the whole anti homosexual laws passed in Russia and stuff but I'd like to keep this thread just about the games and the sports, if anyone wants to discuss those other issues please make a new thread ) Must dig up my DVD of Cool Runnings before Friday and give that a watch to get me in the proper Winter Olypmic mood, haha.

Grrr... Champion Road is doing my nut in! That 2nd part with the 1second rhythm blocks is just so RAGE. I can get over the first "flat" set fine but when it comes to the "steps"...gggrrr... the first few are fine but when you get to the top and have two red steps there doesn't seem to be enough time to get to the top one and make the jump over the gap. I have managed it a few times though, by jumping above the top one and using the groundpound to get a bit of extra air time, but getting the timing of that right is just....gggrrrr... off by a fraction of a second and you'll just plumett down before the block reappears. As I said though I have managed it a few times and the parts after that are fairly straightforward. The best I have managed though is getting as far as the moving water bit with the spikey blocks. It should be a simple section but I somehow manage to frak up everytime. Either screwing up when the water does it's u-turn and not getting to the top half fast enough or just being total facepalm stupid and touching the spikes more than once and dying. Grrr... eventually I'll get there I guess....eventually.

That makes no sense, to get the game but not join the League? If you want to punish Nintendo don't get the game. Don't punish us by denying us your presence online cause of Nintendo's failings.... ...or is it maybe cause you don't actually like us anymore He can get his own Monster Burgers at the sandship sail-tru next time!

Got this preordered today... Now we wait.... @S\.C\.G @Blade prepare for our epic battle to try stay off bottom

No. I dont see what the point of this is. Games from past hsndhelfs should only be on the 3DS VC. With NES and SNES games ok to be on both... Hopefully in the future with a buy on one system get on both at no extra cost. But DS games on the WiiU .... Why? Also think I read somewhere Mario 64 DS might be one of the first to come out.... the hell just give us the N64 original and a bunch of other N64 games too oh and Gamecube games too. These should take higher priorty than DS games on the WiiU VC

Is it just me or is there a massive increase of players going on Loan this season over past seasons. Like every other transger seems be on loan dont recall there ever being so many?

Thinking about possible ideas Nintendo could do if they bough or even just partnered with Konami.. Shattered Memories X Fatal Frame oh just imagine the potential fear and atmosphere if that was done right!

I did metion Deus Ex  But yeah fair enough I forgot bout games that don't "require" it outright but do use it for some parts. Games like WW, W101 (both of which I have and only played with GP btw, loved its use in those) etc I wasn't counting cause they all can be played 100% without it as I was talking about games that would be 100% unplayable without it, like how you need a Balance Board for Wii Fit or need Motion+ for Skyward Sword, Nintendo could have just added a "use a Gamepad for extra features" or something to the boxarts of games that can "also work with GP" (again in this hypothetical scenario) -
Hhhmm... strange reading this dislike of River Song here, I loved her Anyway, finished off Season 6 last night, woot. Also noticed Netflix Canada just added season 7....but only the first 6 eps...grrr... it's ok I already "aquired" all of season 7 anyway Anyway back to season 6 for a mo The ep "Night Terrors" enjoyed it, wasn't anything spectacular but a decent ep, I liked the twist at the end too "The Girl Who Waited", really enjoyed that ep, interesting concept and I think Rory and Amy did well to carry the ep without the Doctor. "The God Complex", another good one, loved teh setting and the idea of the rooms filled with different peoples fears.... not quite sure bout what the creature was though "feds off peoples faith but requires them to praise him :heh:" The end with Amy and Rory was weird....

Ah yeah forgot bout Game&Wario and Art Academy so that's 5 games that require the GP. Wii Sports Golf doesn't actually require you to use the GP, I have played a number of times leaving my GP in charge stand. The Wiimote doesn;t "see" the GP when it is on the ground, the game just knows when the Wiimote is pointing down and displays the club on the GP screen so it works even without the GP on the ground. Wii Sports Club Baseball would be different though, that will prolly require it. Wii Street U and Panorama View, meh they don't count, as you said nobody cares The fact remains there are (currently) very few games out that require it, as much as I do love it, it may as well be treated as an optional extra like Motion+ and the Balance Board. There are no games coming soon (that we know of) that will be using it in any significant way or that "require" it. And these new plans of Nintendo to make it revelvant will prolly take 12-24 months to materilise. Had they said yesterday "we know we've underused the GP's potential so far but we have some exciting new games that are in development and close to complete that we will reveal soon and will launch this year" then I'd think different. But instead we got "oh snap, we made this GP but expected 2nd and 3rd parties to use it more than us, our bad we'll start working on proper games to make it relevant" when they should have been spearheading the thing with all/most of their own games from the start. -

We were talking hypothetically in a situation if Nintendo ever decided to make a WiiU bundle with the Pro Controller and without the GamePad. As I was saying I don't think it would require a big overhaul to the OS at all since most stuff already works without the gamepad. Miiverse as I found out last night already functions just fine without the Gamepad (if you are using a Pro Comtroller you get an onscreen keyboard or you can use a USB Keyboard as Cube tested) so Gamepad isn't required at all for Miiverse. The only changes I see that would need to be made for the OS would be for the console to be able to recognise when turned on if there is no Gamepad connected it would default the TV screen to the Menu screen (something already possible by pressing X on pro controller or 1 on a Wiimote, but having it auto switch would be needed for any new owners that might buy a bundle sans GP as they'd be unaware they'd need to toggle screens) The menu can be operated with a Pro Controller or Wiimote just fine once the Menu is displayed on the TV screen. Then there's eShop and System Settings. eShop currently only works with teh GP, but it already displays on the TV and can be operated using the Buttons/Sticks on the GP so adding at minimum Pro COtroller support shouldn't be that difficult. Same goes for System Settings, it can be operated with the buttons/sticks on the GP, no need to touch anything on screen. The only extra for that is System Settings currently only displays to the GP screen but I doubt it would be that difficult for them to be able to mirror it to the TV screen which at present doesn't do anything for System Settings except provide explanations for the options. In terms of the OS, I can't think of any other changes that would be needed if they ever were to do a sans Gamepad bundle, and the changes I described above hardly seem like massive changes that would overhaul the OS, in fact seem pretty minor to me. Of course it would take them some work to implement them but they are constantly making patches anyway, saying it would create extra work hardly seems like a good enough reason as to why it couldn't be done. EDIT I just re-read your post I think I might have misread it and you were asking about "changing games" but I'll leave what I just typed above anyway. In terms of games...they don't need to change anything. How many games require the Gamepad to be played? I can think of just 3 (NintendoLand, ZombiU and Deus Ex) and 1 of them (Deus Ex) could be patched to work woth Pro Controller...assuming it doesn't already, it might do, I should check that. All other games work with either Pro COntroller or Wiimote or both already so there's no need to make changes to 99% of games. But again this is all in a "what if" situation but I hardly think the reason Nintendo have decided to not make a sans GP bundle is cause they think they couldn't be bothered to do the work to make eShop and System Settings work without it. -

That's a fair point I guess, didn't think about the current stock they'd have in their warehouses. Still if it helpped them get the console into homes even sans GP, wouldn't that be better than both console and GP bundles gathering dust in warehouses? -
Booo, I was hoping for the return of Mewtwo

I would love that pic of Scarlett if it wasn't so obviously shopped, why do they do that? She's already a health fit/thin, why shop her waist thinner?

Not wanting to re-start the whole "is it possible to have the WiiU without the gamepad" thing again. But I just learned something new. @Serebii you said it shouldn't be done cause it would require "considerable manpower" to "Overhaul the OS" to make it work for bundles that are sold sans Gamepad. You said some apps required the Gamepad to work, which is true, eShop, dispite displaying on the TV can only be controlled with teh GP...but can be controller using just the buttons so already works fine without touch screen. System Settings, while only displays on the GP can also be controller with just the buttons, no touch "needed" Miiverse was a slightly different one as I assumed input was only done through the GP and would therefor require a patch to add an onscreen keyboard and/or USB keyboard. Well I just found out it already has an onscreen keyboard (don't know bout USB Keyboard support, I don't have a working one to test with) I was just playing 3D World (and failing once again on Champion Road) decided to take a break, watch some Netflix/Doctor Who, went to Home Menu noticed Miiverse flashing and opened it using the Pro COntroller which I forgot I was using. Went to make a post then realised I wasn't holding the GP, had an idea and navigated to the text field with teh Pro Controller, pressed A, and low and behold on screen keyboard. So Miiverse is already fully functional without the GP (aside from the drawing of course) Now once again I do love the GamePad, the few games that have used it well I think show great potential, but I am very upset that Nintendo themselves have failed to do anything truely meaningful with it. Iwata saying today that they are now going to focus on making the GP more relevent is ridiculous cause they should have been doing that from before the console launched! Only starting to work on that now means that is a long term goal as they are unlikely to have any full proper retail games made that will show us the true value of the GP for at least a year or 18months? In the interm why not offer a reduced price bundle sans Gamepad and with Pro Controller to try and grow the install base. When those games that will make the GP proper relavent do then come out they can also put it on sale. If people want the game they will have to buy the Pad. Any concerns over "oh people won't know what games need it and don't and such even if Nintendo spell it out on the box", well that didn't stop them from pushing out Motion+ or the Balance Board. Hell the first of these "new GP games" could be sold bought on its own and in a bundle with a GP for those that might have bought a bundle sans GP. -
This weeks new ep..... WOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTT that is all

Just had an afternoon game of golf, 18 holes. Finally beat my previous 3under record...and beat it by a good mile too Challenge is open now Mr. @lostmario Got a new Stamp for it too, forgot to get a screen of it though. "King of Clubs" for finishing 9 or more under, I just barely got it. EDIT Oh and I got an Eagle in that game too (first eagle on Sport Club...shame no stamps for eagles) It was the hole that is 3rd on the classic course

Just checked the eShop... so they have a banner thing for this new 60% sale off these five games... but I don't think the prices are reflected yet? 10euro for Might Switch Force HD and 15euro for Toki Tori 2+... that's full price yeah?

But their not designed "around" the Gamepad they just currently only work with it. Again eShop is also displayed on the TV and works just fine using the GamePads buttons and Sticks ...the SAME buttons and sticks on the Pro Controller I'd hardly think just getting the app to recognise the Pro Controller would be that difficult. Just checked the System Settings app and that too can be navigated and opertaed using just the buttons and sticks on the GamePad again the same inputs as on the Pro Controller. Of course it would take some amount of time to create such a patch but I do not think the idea that "oh it'll take too much work best not bother" as you are suggesting is a valid enough reason for not doing it if the idea for creating console bundles without a GamePad were on the table. I could say the very same then about then using manpower to make the suggested OS patch changes if they were gonna make the GP optional. -

The entire OS? How so? A lot of the OS works without the GamePad already. If you press the X button on the Pro Controller it swaps the menu and Miiverse Plaza screens so that the Menu is on the TV and you can control the menu and select games/apps with withe Pro Controller already. All that would be needed in the case of the Menu is for the WiiU to be able to recognise there is no GamePad turned on so that it automatically pushes the Menu to the TV. Pretty sure the console can already recognise the different controllers when they are turned on (ie: it knows if you turned on a Wiimote or a Pro COntroller)... pretty sure I remember someone here saying if they don't want to waste GP battery they leave it in a different room so it doesn't turn on when the console powers up so the console is already capable of working without a GP turned on. All it needs then is to then know which screen to put on the TV if no GP is found, this mainly for the benifit of new-owners that might be unaware you can toggle the menu/plaza with a button press. In regards to the eShop, that already displays on the TV, all that would be needed would be added support for Pro COntroller and Wiimote controls. Hell it works just fine without the touch screen already as I often navigate eShop using the buttons and sticks on the GamePad rather than the touch screen. For something like the System Settings app, which only displays on the GP (don't know if you can currently move it tothe TV, never tried???), again similar to the Home Menu, if the console doesn't detect a GP in use then it pushes the display to the TV and they just need o add Pro Controller/Wiimote support. And again for Miiverse, onscreen keyboard and/or USB Keyboard support...I think actually does the console already support USB Keyboards? Pretty sure it does for MH3U anyway. I hardly think these changes constitute and "total OS overhaul". And the way you say it would take up "considerable manpower" is a non-issue. What so just cause it would take hard work they shouldn't do it? Any patches they've made to the system since launch likely cost "considerable manpower" so by your logical they should have just left the console at it's day one patch and never did anything else? Iwata mentioned plans for another "Summer Update" for this year, I bet that is costing "considerable manpower", maybe they should stop that and work on something else. The development of the Wind Waker HD remake must have cost "considerable manpower" too, perhaps they shouldn't have bothered with that maybe we'd then be closer to having a new Zelda if they didn't waste rescources on WWHD. Hell back in the NES days, I'm sure R&D and development of the SNES would have cost "considerable manpower", why didn't they just use that man power to focus on more NES games. Development of the Wii U and Gamepad certainly cost them considerable manpower that they could have used elsewhere on other ideas but this is the road they decided to walk on and they have used up "considerable manpower" in making various mistakes that have put the WiiU where it is today. This 3rd pillar QoL idea will certainly take up considerable manpower that I would think should be best used on fixing problems with the WiiU. While I don;t think my ideas for how a WiiU could work without a Gamepad would be that difficult to implement I would like to see other more meaningful changes made, stuff that would actually require an OS overhal. Proper Online options, voice chat at the OS level, pop up notifications for when someone comes online or sends you a PM, maybe even the ability to check PM's without having to pause the game you are currently in. Game invites. All that stuff would indeed take "considerable manpower" and it is manpower I would like to used on making the Wii U better than wasted on a 3rd Pillar chasing an expanded market at the cost of their long time "core" customers -

Mokong replied to Hero-of-Time's topic in Nintendo Gaming
True, but if their new "3rd pillar" is focused sole on "non-core" games for the "expanded audience" then they are not likely to be putting "core" games on it. I was trying to say with the DS, at least that catered for both sides, this new 3rd pillar (it appears) won't.
