That's taking into account Metroid Prime 3, which was on the Wii and still sold way less than the original Metroid Prime on GCN.Fact is, DK and Mario have always outsold Metroid in the past, and continue to have the best chance of doing so now. Metroid is infinitely more needed at the moment for us, but as far as Nintendo is concerned it's the last thing they need. Why spend the time/money producing a Metroid game that's essentially guaranteed to give a miniscule return compared to a Mario or DK platformer? It's the same story with F-Zero. That franchise has sold around 6 million in total, but compare that to Mario Kart, which has sold almost 100 million, and it's pretty clear why Nintendo choose to focus on MK and ignore F-Zero.
-
Yeah, I believe Donkey Kong Country Returns sold more than all of the Metroid Prime games combined. So in terms of trying to achieve sales, DKCTF is absolutely the right decision for Nintendo/Retro Studios.

Those visuals ... that music ... the sound effects and canned laughter... Major Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon vibes. Another vid: I am so getting this game now.
-
I mean it's unlikely I'll get it at release, but will keep it in mind as a future purchase.
-
Yeah... that was a pretty bad showcase of this on the ND. Xenoblade isn't a particularly good game to watch someone else play, but the real-time combat system is actually awesome in that game. It'll no doubt be the same with X, but it just doesn't come across well in that footage. Oh man, I hope this also includes a Japanese voice option then.

I quite like this game, only played it for an hour or so but it seems pretty good. Not exactly the usual F2P style though, where you can access most (if not all of the content) but it just takes ages, so spending money will speed up the process. The free version of Sub Wars feels much more like a demo really. And as has already been mentioned, the lack of friend matchmaking is insane. So yeah, don't reckon I'll be getting the premium version.

Updated the list with release date info from the ND. That lack of blue titles... My purchases are probably going to go something like this... Feb: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Senran Kagura Burst March: Nowt. Yoshi is looking way too similar to the SNES version, plus I'll be busy with DK and the booby game. April: Nintendo Pocket Football Club and possibly NES Remix 2 May: Mario Golf: World Tour Mario Kart 8 Will save Kirby for a future drought.

I can't stop watching the new trailer, sends shivers up my spine every time! Wish Nintendo would've revealed some more info last night too, but I suppose they want to keep it back for the inevitable MK8 Direct. Which is probably for the best, as too much revealed in advance will just make the wait even harder! I've been checking out some of the new artwork for the game though, it's really nice. They've got Lakitu rocking a TV camera with the MK TV logo on it. A lot of the items appear to have new renders for this version too, including the Red Shell. *saves for future avatar/sig* How am I going to cope with this 105 day wait? I highly doubt that. There should be at least 2 weeks from launch date before starting the league, in order for everyone to get used to the new gameplay and unlock a decent amount of characters/vehicles. Lostmario's call though.
-
Yeah. That's just how they've adapted it for the anti-gravity mechanic, by separating that section of the track and having you jump on to it! :awesome:
-
That's Mario Circuit from Super Circuit: Man, I can't wait to hear that baseline in decent quality. But yeah, keeps the style of the original (as did the GBA version) so it looks amazing!! And I was completely wrong about the retro tracks making use of anti-gravity. Note to self... never underestimate Nintendo. So good. :awesome:I might just have to freeze myself until May 30th.
-
Fucking hell, I almost fainted during the new Mario Kart 8 trailer! Absolutely incredible. :o That right there is reason enough to own a Wii U.
-
That's an understatement. Guess what will take long...
-
It's about bloody time! MK8 demo for the "now on eShop" surprise please, Nintendo.
-
*drools* But you bastards, Nintendo! Why'd you go and alter the logo after I'd made the N-E League one?
-
Has Australia not got Super Mario 3D World yet? Seriously though, it doesn't get much more must-have than that.
-
The problem there is that if Nintendo do go and make every single MK track available in MK8 (via DLC, or otherwise) then you've essentially got the definitive MK game, at least in terms of content. Which would be great obviously, but then what do they do with MK9? If they don't include every track again, it'll be seen as a step back. And when you consider that each new MK game has to include new tracks, if they're also adding the entire history of tracks, well it's going to get ridiculous. In a way I'd almost prefer it if they dropped the whole retro tracks thing, and instead focus on a full set of new ones each time. But of course I've played (and can still play) every game in the series. [/selfish] The other aspect to that though is how the new gameplay mechanics are used in track design. With previous MK titles it's always been relatively straightforward to include retro tracks, even in MK7 with the gliding/underwater feature, the retro tracks they chose worked perfectly with those new mechanics. However, the anti-gravity feature in MK8 is a whole different story (it's going to make for some incredible track designs, that Möbius strip style Mario Circuit looks mental) but it's probably going to mean it'll be difficult to adapt retro tracks this time around. I'm guessing they just won't make much use of anti-gavity for those. So yeah, I'd say DLC in MK is far more suited to characters, or custom parts for your kart/bike. As long as they don't have too much impact for online play/time trials. In fact they should probably just offer cosmetic changes and stats that are also obtainable with some of the on-disc content.
-
This. They also need to be showing us more from MK8 already, let's know what the deal is with online, MKTV, etc...
-
Looks like it. Damn you, Dcubed and your accurate predictions!

There's no Nintendo Direct this week, is there? Bloody hell, Nintendo... Seriously, this is beyond a joke now.

Do Nintendo's Game Droughts Make You Game Elsewhere?
RedShell replied to Goron_3's topic in Nintendo Gaming
It's a terrible situation that's for sure, anyone that has owned the Wii U/3DS since launch and is up to date with all of the released games, basically has no choice but to look elsewhere at the moment. As I mentioned in the eShop thread though, I find it mind-boggling how Nintendo allow this to happen in the first place. Do they not see the problem? Not care? It just doesn't make sense, a company of their scale shouldn't get in this situation. Anyway... I'm currently playing several things across many different platforms, and I am still using my Wii U on a daily basis for Wii Fit U. I also downloaded Runner 2 the other day in the sale, but not played it much yet. On PC I've been messing with the Just Cause 2 Multiplayer Mod. Got a copy of PaRappa the Rapper off eBay, which I'm playing on PS3 along with the occasional PSN game. Started borrowing my sister's iPad and have been checking out some of the games on that, Temple Run 2 in particular has been a lot of fun. And my 3DS is still getting used for the odd bit of Animal Crossing (yes, I'm still playing it! ) and some KORG M01D composing. So I suppose one positive to droughts is that it can make you go back to slightly older games that you probably would've stopped playing otherwise, and get a little bit more out of them. But yeah, given the option I'd obviously much rather see a consistent release schedule from Nintendo. -
Yep. The Diddy Kong Racing soundtrack is one of my all time faves and definitely my favorite of Wise's work. You just can't help but smile and feel good when listening to this: So uplifting! Awesome! What program did you use? By the way, there was a DKC soundfont in the works. Not sure if it's still going or not though. The guy making it uploaded this example: I've messed about with F-Zero and Super Mario Kart soundfonts before, really good fun.
-
Yeah, crazy isn't it? I just can't wait for the next Nintendo Direct... Going to be interesting to see what Nintendo have got cooked up, now that they're well and truly in panic mode.
-
Oh God, I'd forgotten about that. Oh well, at least once MK8 is out (and the N-E League is in full swing) I'll never really notice any future droughts on Wii U. Indeed. I've been very much enjoying that privilege with the PS3 recently, loads of games for me to choose from, at incredibly cheap prices! Obviously anyone that buys a Wii U now will be fine (like you mentioned earlier) all of the games released thus far instantly at their disposal and in many cases a lot cheaper than they were at launch, plus all the upcoming stuff. It's those of us that were there from day 1 that are suffering the drought. I'd like to think that I'll never buy another game console at launch again, but I just know that when Nintendo release a new system, I'll fall into the trap all over again.
-
Fair play, but given the situation I still think they'd be better off putting a bit more focus on smaller eShop titles. I mean there's going to be a 3 month gap (not quite, but close enough) between Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze! That is insane. You don't need to be "game thirsty" to realise that is way too big of a gap. Obviously wouldn't be as much of an issue if there was substantial 3rd party software available, but there isn't, and there hasn't been for a long time now. Nintendo need to ensure that they can fully support their hardware by themselves, otherwise it's just going to be a ongoing problem that'll really hurt them in the long run as people will start to look elsewhere for their gaming needs.
-
Same here, PS3 and PC. It's just so disappointing that Nintendo still allows these kind of droughts to happen. Seriously, with the amount of manpower and expertise at their disposal, this should never be an issue. They should be able to literally fart out little games for the eShop, anything to help fill the gaps between major titles. If indie devs can put together games in a relatively short space of time, with like a handful of people working on something, how the hell can Nintendo, a company with thousands of staff, not do the same?
