demonmike04 Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5035734.stm Apparently its a 'major emergency', but to be honest i've never heard of a minor emergency. DISCUSS.
Marshmellow Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 im pretty sure chemicals are bad specially when they explode so im guessing it is pretty major but yah pretty sure pretty sure
Guest Jordan Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 Shit... i wonder what they make there. Hopefully nothing corrosive... :S
demonmike04 Posted June 1, 2006 Author Posted June 1, 2006 Yeah thats what im wondering jordan, I live less than 2 miles away from the buncefield explosion.. I coughed so much that week it was killer on my neck. But here you got a huge ammount of chemicals, hopefully we'l hear more bout it in the hours to come.
Guest Jordan Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 People saw yellow flashes? Okay science people, what mixes with Oxygen and gives off a yellow spark. Times that by several million times! Seriously though, putting out a chemical fire is even harder than the oil one a few months ago. God help those fire fighters.
Ginger_Chris Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 That oil one was massive though, i live in oxford atm, and i felt that thing go up, and i was 80 miles away. I remember going to search on the net straight after feeling it, as i though England had another one of its mini earthquakes. Is this one as large, or just because theres a load of things that shouldnt ever be contaminating the air floating around?

AshMat Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 They'll be reet odwin, the people in the plant were only treated for shock anwyay.
Ginger_Chris Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 No-one seemed to be majorly hurt which is good, although I wouldnt recommend going back soon odwin, the article said the gas was full of ammonia. That place must smell absolutely rank now. I always hated that smell in chemistry. @The3rdChlidren - Cheers, i always though it was a bit plain/bland
Ice9 Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 well it says its owned by "Terra Nitrogen UK", so maybe its Nitrogen..
conzer16 Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 Sodium based chemicals would give off a yellow/orange flash/flame. I hope no-one is seriously injured
Blackfox Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 Its been downgraded to a low scale incident now. The BBC probably over sensationalised it incase it turns into another Hemel Hemptstead.

A minor emergency would be say someone stuck in a tree... you still need to call the emergency services to get them down but its minor compared to an explosion somewhere.
