Daft Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 If people find these picture I keep posting annoying (I know I don't really post many of my own), tell me and I'll stop but I was looking round that site and found this and thought it was amazing. This sequence of 12 frames was taken over a span of about 45 minutes on March 12, 2008. In that brief time, Cassini covered almost 40,000 kilometers in its approach to a flyby encounter with Enceladus. The overexposure and smearing of the images gives a hint of the raw speed involved - 14.4 km/sec (or 32,211 mph). Shortly after this sequence, at its closest, Casini approached within 52 km (32.3 miles) of the surface of Enceladus.

Yeah, it may take a long time to transmit the images (I don't know the bandwidth of the datalink they have) but it'd be /so/ worth it.

They need to send like an SLR or something on one of those long distant sattelites just to take some nice ultra hi-res images of a planet or something. Yeah, it may take a long time to transmit the images (I don't know the bandwidth of the datalink they have) but it'd be /so/ worth it. I'm pretty sure the cameras they put on those satellites are way more powerful than any SLR down here.

Perhaps most famous for the powerfully explosive eruption in 1883 that killed tens of thousands of people, ash from a violent eruption might also have temporarily altered Earth's climate as long as 1500 years ago. In 1927, eruptions caused smaller Anak Krakatau to rise from the sea, and the emerging volcanic island continues to grow at an average rate of 2 cm per day. The latest eruption of Anak Krakatau started in 2008 April and continues today. In this picture, Anak Krakatau is seen erupting from Rakata, the main island of the Krakatoai group. High above, stars including the Big Dipper are clearly apparent.

I love how this photo really represents what a beautiful day that day was (even if the levels/white balance is a bit iffy), while it was pissing it down with rain here. I miss Tokyo sometimes...
