Maybe early next year I'll play it again and see what happens :D I think loading up the save and getting back into it wouldn't feel right.

I tried playing the S version a year or two back but ended up dropping it. It was too soon to be playing again after playing the vanilla version. I still plan on going back to it and starting it again at some point.

I just looked at my trophy list for the S version and it seems I didn't finish Act 3
My brain's messed up.

Anyways, I just fought my first two Metal Slimes in DQ3...and I killed them both. It's always magical when that happens :D

Sadly, I farmed so much beforehand that I didn't level up at all

I thought you didn't! I remember you sacking it off as you had seen enough from the first ending, so you never got to see the true end of the game.

You know more about myself than I do :p

Any DQ3 masters here?

I've reached the facility that lets me change classes but I wonder when I should do it.
Also got a book that lets me switch to Sage but it says I can only do it once? Because apparently the book dissolves once read? Is Sage the best class or what gives?

CHOICE PARALYSIS, PEOPLE, HELP!

Sage is yes*. People often use 2 or 3 in a team (the book is also a monster drop*). Change a mage or a priest if you have one.

* unless something changed in this version

Will do, thank you :)

Finally got some more time to play last night and will have more time today.

Still grinding my way through some monsters, but I think I should move on and acquire some Black Pepper.

For now, I'm going to the sauna (in real life) :p

I don't start this up a lot these days, but when I do I always think: "Yes, it's time to finally make some progress". And I did...got the Black Pepper and in return was gifted a ship.

Now I found an island that spawns Metal Slimes and occasionally Liquid Metal Slimes so...

Yeah...

15 hours in and I have no idea when I'll continue with the story :p

I've been playing through this this week. Just got the ship myself.

Just a heads up, if you want more Sages. A level 20 Gadabout can become a Sage without reading.

Where is that?

Outside the Shrine of Teleportation (or whatever it's called). Don't have a map at hand so I can't tell you more details :p

Because I'm pretty overpowered thanks to approximately 15 hours of grinding (YEAH!) I decided to actually make some progress.

LET THE ORB HUNT COMMENCE.

Found one pretty much just lying around near a pirate base. GG EZ.
Also found the Ultimate Key which I assume lets me open up all doors.

I'll keep repeating myself: Dragon Quest games are pure soulfood.

I was gonna call you out on this, until I remembered that I spent a good 10+ hours sailing around, and scavenging every little sparkly morsel I could find on the map.

But hey, Hero's level 40+ now, the other three have a full ability list from three different vocations, I have 68 monsters, and a quarter of a million gold with nothing left to spend it on at the mo.

Grinding in a different sense there. Got the last orb this morning, so off I go to use them somewhere.

What paths did you go out of interest? I'm not sure what to do.

I started the game with a Thief, a Monster Wrangler, and a Priest. Mostly from previous Dragon Quest experience, I guessed that Thief would learn "Nose for Treasure", which is immensely helpful for getting every treasure chest/hidden item. They do. Monster Wrangler turned out to be very beneficial because they get an ability that tells you if a frienddly monster is nearby. Priest, well, that's self explanatory.

Once someone has learnt every ability/spell a vocation can give, I change it. Every spell and ability carries over, so my priest can still heal things, even though they're not a priest anymore. Hero there functions well enough as a backup healer, so I'm not desperate

So with that in mind, here's how I've been reclassing them.

Thief - Monster Wrangler - Warrior
Monster Wrangler - Thief - Merchant
Priest - Merchant - Thief

Yeah, Thieves are just insanely useful, what with their increased chances of getting an item drop. Gotten quite a lot of seeds from that, which I've pumped into Hero, seeing as he can't change class, so his stats are a bit limited compared to the others (I say limited, but they are still pretty damn high, so...).

Merchant was a bit of a bust, none of those abilities are that useful. Unless you want every skill, you can safely skip that.
Monster Wrangler has excellent skills, but they take a while to learn everything, and some skills are tied behind finding friendly monsters. Well worth it though. Monster Pile-On absolutely melts bosses if you keep up with that. Attack Attacker is also helpful to blunt bosses as well.

Anyway, the plan is to end with Gadabout/Sage for every character. Will probably revert one back to Thief, just for the extra item drop chance.

Jury is still out on Warrior and Martial Artist, but if my hunch is right, Multifists should be on Martial Artist, and that's always been a great move. Warrior normally has some good skills as well (Metal Slash, I'm guessing), so I'll likely get everyone on that.

Got 5 orbs now.
No clue where to go next, though. Some weird voice told me to find a shipwreck but I have no idea where it is. I love this game :D

Edit: ...wow, I'm blind :p  Found it!

You thought it would be on the right side of the map, didn't you?

Nah, I simply didn't see the icon on the map until  45 minutes ago :D

Oh...
Well, definitely discount what I said there, because I certainly didn't trawl around on the right hand side of the map for 10 minutes because one of the pirates mentioned seeing it on the "Starboard side", no sirree!

More than 2 million copies have been sold worldwide since the game launched a few weeks ago.

Per Square Enix

Quote

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 5, 2024)  SQUARE ENIX® announced today that DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake, the RPG that IGN called "a shining example of how to remake a classic RPG," has surpassed 2 million units in worldwide shipments and digital downloads. The game, which launched globally on Nov. 14, is currently available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam® and Microsoft Store on Windows.

Sounds very much deserved based on its reception, really hope between this and I & II HD that S-E do the right thing and HD-2Dify some other games in their back catalogue (ahem, Chrono Trigger).

I'm sure I'll be adding another to that figure myself at some point, too :D

Well, well, well.
Now that the world has truly opened up, I found a certain spot that can spawn up to 3 Liquid Metal Slimes, it seems.

WELL, WELL, WELL. Looks like I know how I will spend my day, now that I'm done with all the responsible stuff I had to do today :p

Super humongous ending spoilers!

Uhhhh... Wow! I think I now understand why this game was such a humongous deal in Japan. This was a 1988 NES game!? It's done that!? Man, the scope is insane! Absolutely unheard of in RPG's back then.

Now excuse me while I go scavenging around the ocean again!

EDIT: AWWW YEAH! Gimme that scrummy Sage's Staff! Free Multiheal's for...
...What do you mean, it doesn't cast Multiheal in this game!? What bloody use is Midheal now!?

Really happy to see multiple new folk finding out about the greatness of DQIII. Warms my heart to see a classic meet the recognition it deserves.
