Julius Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Sony's quarterly earnings report came out this morning for the quarter ending December 31st 2024 – and PlayStation 5 is performing spectacularly. • 75 million units sold LTD, now just 1.5 million units behind PS4 when launch-aligned. • second best Q3/quarter for PlayStation of all-time in terms of console unit sales – 9.5m (best was PS4 in Q3 2016, during which the Pro and Slim were released). • emphasis placed on diversifying line-up with more family and live-service games, with the success of Astro Bot and Helldivers II highlighted specifically in this slide: • record Q3 revenues and operating profits. • 42% of PS5s sold in the quarter were to new users. • PS5 shipped 20.2 million units in 2024, meaning 20+ million units shipped for two years consecutively. PS4 peaked with calendar year shipments of 19.5 million units in 2016. Curious about those new users – got to imagine it's a combination of Xbox owners coming over and the runaway breakout success of games like Stellar Blade and Black Myth: Wukong in the emerging East Asian markets? Infinity Nikki, too, no doubt. Done all this while having a relatively tepid year in terms of first-party line-up last year...and GTA VI (along with all that lovely GTA Online money) is still to come. If it releases this Fall as they're saying it will, then there's no doubt in my mind that PlayStation are going to have a new record for number of consoles sold in a single quarter, will overtake the PS4 lifetime sales when launch-aligned at long last, and I imagine will pass the 100 million mark for PS5s sold when reporting next year's EOY financials (for the FY ending 31st March 2026). Wild. Yōtei is going to move a good number of units too! Also – that Astro Bot call out! Relegated into the back pages if it was present at all, and now it's the poster child for wanting to diversify their line-up of games, specifically shouting out more family games. Exactly the reaction I wanted to see following it's success – do they have time to bring that aim to life by the end of the PS5's life, I wonder?
Happenstance Posted February 16 Posted February 16 Started messing with PS5 Remote Play now I've had my internet and routers upgraded. Interesting that the 3rd party remote play apps seem to work much better than the official one. Looking forward to my Odin 2 Portal handheld arriving so I can use it with a nice sized device. 1
Julius Posted February 16 Posted February 16 According to Jeff Grubb, PlayStation are considering whether their event for the summer should be a State of Play or Showcase. Quote Internally it sounds like they're debating, flapping between, maybe making something this summer a full showcase versus another State of Play. But they are considering a showcase. Makes sense to me, feels like they're at the point where there's a lot to show/reveal. Saros is set for 2026; Wolverine, according to the Insomniac leaks, was set for 2026; Venom was set for 2025 according to those same leaks (less than 6 months between launch like Miles in 2020 for a spin-off seems right if it's still a thing and still aiming for 2025? A lot of if's there ); Ghost of Yōtei is still waiting on its release date to be announced but is set for release this year, and surely we'll know what Rockstar's plans are for GTA VI by the time this event rolls around, so GoY will be due a blowout; there are all the GAAS titles they've got lined up (Marathon, Fairgame$, Convallaria), one will surely get its due; then there's Intergalactic, which I think could realistically be aiming for 2026*, just based on how Naughty Dog and Druckmann have talked at length about how they regretted showing The Last of Us Part II early, and even regretted the E3 demo, which was shown only 2 years before release – I do think they were smart not to throw a year on that trailer, though, just to set expectations and in case things slide. It feels like their summer event could easily be propped up to be like PlayStation's E3 2018 showing, which was a blowout for the big titles we'd see between then and the PS4 winding down in 2020 – The Last of Us Part II, Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, etc. Not that I'm expecting a Showcase, honestly, but personally, I'd much rather see a blowout than this pace of tacking on just the one PS Studios title at the end of each, because inevitably that won't happen and people will be very vocal about it AND I think a blowout event this summer tied with potential price drops this Black Friday/Christmas season and the launch of GTA VI would completely blow the lid off PS5 sales. Oh, and there's potential Cory Barlog's next game, too. The * for Intergalactic is I think that game has to be 2026 so that it doesn't rub up against and clash with Barlog's game, which I think would then come in 2027, a d I guess is when we assume the PS6 launches unless COVID is actually taken into account and they aim for 2028 instead? ANYWAYS Grubb is also saying he's heard Fairgame$ will be 2026 Quote If you were hoping to potentially see Fairgame$, the previously announced live-service heist game, then think again. That's because, according to reliable insider Jeff Grubb, Fairgame$ has been pushed back to 2026. In his Game Mess Decides podcast, Grubb responded to multiple fans inquiring about the Haven Studios-led project. "No Fairgame$ this year," Grubb said. "Fairgame$, as far as I'm aware, has been pushed to 2026." k thx bye
Happenstance Posted February 22 Posted February 22 Been testing the Portal this morning and seems to work perfectly on the local network, not really noticing any lag. I'll test it over 4g/5g next time I go somewhere with a better signal than around here. I've reserved my PS5s IP address and opened up all the recommended ports so everything should be good to go.
Hero-of-Time Posted March 6 Posted March 6 Quote Gears of War is almost certainly set to make its PS5 debut this year, with multiple rumourmongers claiming some kind of remastered trilogy will be announced for Sony’s system this summer. However, there could be a catch: it may be missing competitive multiplayer. Writing on X (or Twitter), a snoopster named DetectiveSeeds claimed the rumoured collection has already been loaded onto the PS Store with a mid-August release date. The sneak said it’ll be PS5 Pro enhanced but will have no PvP multiplayer modes. Unable to verify the source, we initially shrugged this story off, but connected Windows Central scribe Jez Corden has since added fuel to the fire, saying he has also heard there’ll be no multiplayer. Disappointing, if true. Gears multiplayer was an absolute blast and completely unique, even to this day. They should at least bring back Horde mode. On the plus side, if there's no multiplayer mode that also means there shouldn't be a SERIOUSLY achievement/trophy in this version of the game. Those things were brutal. 1
drahkon Posted March 6 Posted March 6 I remember playing/trying Gears of War back in the days and hated it. Maybe co-op with a mate might be the way to go. Don't care about PvP

I played halfway through the first game's campaign and just thought it was bland. Didn't really care for anything that was happening. Maybe now I'm more into the violence, though. Seems like a good outlet given my intense aversion to what's happening in the world these days 2
bob Posted March 6 Posted March 6 GoW co-op was great. We played through all the main games in co-op mode, and they were fantastic (once you got used to controlling people the size and manoeuvrability of tanks). I never played the multiplayer though. 1 1
Julius Posted March 6 Posted March 6 (edited) An official PS5 rental service is coming to the UK – link to the service on PS Direct. Per Eurogamer: Quote You can now lease a PS5, along with the likes of a PS VR2 set and Sony's handheld remote player PlayStation Portal, here in the UK. This leasing service debuted in Japan, and quickly became a hit. As Ed reported this morning, GEO's PS5 rental service in Japan is fully booked across its 400 stores nationwide. It's been a monster (hunter) success, you could say. And now, it is our turn. Sony's PS Direct UK website lets you rent a digital-only PS5 for £11/month, or a PS5 with a disc drive for £12/month. Stump up £19/month and you can rent a PS5 Pro. If you want a PS VR2, it's £18.50/month - or £20/month if you want access to Horizon: Call of the Mountain too. PlayStation Portal is £6.50/month. @bob I was gutted reading about your experience with Spider-Man 2 on PC – this might be of interest to you as another means to play the game, rather than shelling out for a PS5 in its entirety? Edited March 6 by Julius 1
killthenet Posted March 6 Posted March 6 The leasing service seems pretty good if you want to test out the PS Portal for a month and see how it works for yourself (£13.99 for one month) but some of the devices are pretty expensive if you go for a single month rental. I would be interested in trying out a PSVR 2 but £52 for a month seems pretty steep, and the longer leases for things like the PS5 Pro don't exactly offer great value (if you opt for a 36 month lease the Pro over £680) but I suppose you're probably covered for replacements for the length of your contract

This is an interesting idea - do you rent the games too? Or would i need to buy games for a console I don't own? I'm not sure it would save me money in the long run though - at the rate I finish games, i'd have spent the equivalent of a full PS5 by the time i complete SM2!

The price for a PS5 rental aint that bad since PS6 will likely be out before you end up paying the full price of the console.
Hero-of-Time Posted March 6 Posted March 6 Another day, another dualsense announcement. One for you, @Julius? 1
Julius Posted March 6 Posted March 6 (edited) 19 minutes ago, Hero-of-Time said: Another day, another dualsense announcement. One for you, @Julius? Oh a tag from H-o-T, wonder what this is ab– Welp. My poor wallet. Thanks for the tag @Hero-of-Time, going to need to add this drop to my calendar! I was actually just discussing with my mates earlier today how I was considering finally importing the JP-exclusive Final Fantasy XVI DualSense (maybe the plates too) as they just keep climbing in value and my bonus is coming in this month, and my group has taken to Helldivers II pretty well so far and so that DualSense had also been under consideration (think I'm going to commit to buying it only after playing a certain number of hours in the game). Got to imagine Ghost of Yōtei gets one later this year, too. But yeah...I'll buy this, happily. Which is funny because I don't think it actually looks that good. The first game is better than the second which I think is still great and also one of my all-time favourites, so I can't not. This drops on the 10th and the show starts on the 13th? Guess I'll wait for this to arrive, beat Part I in 3 days, and roll right on into Part II alongside the show I have too many of these damn DualSense controllers, man, I think I'm at 5 functioning (black/silver/Astro/pearl white/30th) besides the two retired launch DualSenses I had (sticks started to drift). Kind of wish they made these exponentially more expensive for people with more DualSenses like myself just to put me off Edited March 6 by Julius 1
Hero-of-Time Posted March 7 Posted March 7 I see this got announced last night. I'm very surprised and happy that they have went all out and made this a stand alone release, rather than just tacking it on to the original game. I played the original early last year and absolutely loved it and so I have high hopes for this. 2

Julius Posted Monday at 12:49 PM Posted Monday at 12:49 PM Previously rumoured, the Astro Bot PS5 bundles have been confirmed to start releasing in stores globally this week: Astro's Playroom and Astro Bot! Some kids are going to have great birthdays/an awesome Christmas this year with this bundle, that's for sure
Julius Posted Tuesday at 11:44 AM Posted Tuesday at 11:44 AM Cerny touting the 2026 update for PS5 Pro's capabilities bringing it in line with FSR 4. Yeah I don't know exactly what it means either, but reading through the reactions it seems like a big deal
Hero-of-Time Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago Some of these are absolutely spot on with the way I do things. The final point is one I'm faffing on with right now. 1
Julius Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago 1 hour ago, Hero-of-Time said: Some of these are absolutely spot on with the way I do things. The final point is one I'm faffing on with right now. Just gave this a watch, and even as probably one of the softer Trophy Hunters around here...yeah, I can definitely relate on most of these My problem is I try to save the final boss/story beat/whatever as the final trophy if I'm going for a Plat, so, for example, in Infinite Wealth, this would mean doing eeeeeeeverything else before the final chapter (hence my current Dondoko predicament; the Dondoko Delusion, if you will). I mainly do this because if I roll credits I'm typically done with a game unless I know ahead of time there's something else in store for me. There are times where this backfires, too, though. Spider-Man 2, you stupidly fun but also stupidly trophy-designed game, WHY IS THE FINAL SUIT YOU COLLECT LOCKED BEHIND THE CREDITS AND PART OF SOME DUMB FINAL PUZZLE. Grinds my gears, I tell you! This ties into the Plat screenshot, actually, because Spidey 2's is guaranteed to be stupid because of this. On the flipside, games like The Last of Us Part I and Elden Ring? Designed to capture the logo at the start of credits – super clean, love it. The ones I can't relate to as much are the multiplayer ones - I don't think my friends would put up with me for very long if I asked them to grind a Plat out with me, much less for Helldivers 2, because I gave the trophy list a quick look and some of them are pretty bonkers! - and, of course, saving a special Plat for a certain milestone. I simply don't Plat enough games to do this - and if I did, let me tell you, some games wouldn't be getting played in this lifetime because I'd be holding out for some of my favourites - but, anecdotally, the occasional Plat has been a milestone and I'm like "oh, hey, that's neat that it was this game!" I think I like the idea of planning it - something like a Final Fantasy VII something being #7, #70, #77, #700, #707, #777, etc. - more than I do the idea of personally earning the Plat in that many games. ALSO! Feel like they missed out on a big one: save scumming! Are you a real trophy hunter if you haven't save scummed through the cloud for something like an alt ending in a From Software game? Thanks for sharing H-o-T, that gave me a good laugh very curious to find out which game is being saved/played for your next milestone... 1

So many of them are garbage. For example, every game in the FF pixel collection gives you this. They could have done so much more. I've definitely had games where I've timed by platinum, one of which was Astro Bot. I wanted Kiryu as the final shot and so saved that trophy until last. I do like to keep big games for my milestones. I think most of mine are Final Fantasy, and other favourite franchises. PSNProfiles gives you milestones for every 25 you earn but once you pass a certain level it sadly only tracks every 50. As for my 850th? I was gonna save Monster Hunter Wilds for it but after playing it, it wasn't worthy of such a spot. I'm thinking I'll just autopop Like a Dragon Gaiden. 1

For the longest time I remember the RGG games had chapter completion trophies just be a black screen too, seems like they've learned their lesson and changed it to be the final shot of each chapter, and each chapter naturally ending on a bit of a cliffhanger makes them so pleasant to look at now What I do for some particularly terrible ones is make sure I've got the clips set up for 30 seconds on Platinum pops only, which means I can scrub through and get a nice clean screenshot. Remember having to do this for Armored Core VI if I'm remembering right, the Platinum shot will just be the rating of your final mission (the Plat will almost certainly an S-rank replay of the final mission) but using the clip I grabbed a screenshot from the cutscene before and it looked much better! 47 minutes ago, Hero-of-Time said: I've definitely had games where I've timed by platinum, one of which was Astro Bot. I wanted Kiryu as the final shot and so saved that trophy until last. I love this one Ooo, let's share a nightmare I had with one of my Plats. Jedi: Survivor! Thought I only had one trophy left to obtain as it was quite late and I was admittedly pretty tired - the one for the bounty hunter quest line - and so, knowing how that ends and who turns up, you can imagine how excited I was to scrub through that last 30 seconds to get the right look for the Platinum screenshot I'd save elsewhere. Problem was, buried deep in the trophy list was another trophy I'd missed...and so it didn't pop. And not only did it not pop, the trophy which was left and for which my Plat popped for that game was simply get 10 perfectly timed precision releases – which I did at a meditation point because it was the most reliable way to do it. Painful. This actually made me go through some of my default Plat screenshots on the PS5, and man, there's just so many more bad than there are good! Figure I might as well share the high- and lowlights now that I've checked them out The Good Spoiler Spider-Man Yakuza: Like A Dragon Final Fantasy XVI The Last of Us Part I The Last of Us Remastered (yeah okay the 'Press Any Button' kinda ruins it, but it's too iconic and I got a clean version screenshot on my console at least!) Elden Ring Ghost of Tsushima (PS5 auto-pop) (this one I think the only trophy that didn't auto-pop is the photo mode one? So it's got all this UI stuff to the side, but I've got a clean shot without it at least) The Bad & The Ugly Spoiler Spider-Man 2 Like A Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name Gran Turismo 7 (PS4 auto-pop) Gran Turismo 7 Armored Core VI Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (pain) Shame I don't have any of my PS4 Plat screenshots anymore, but I guess that gives me a good excuse to play newer versions of those games with their own trophy lists 47 minutes ago, Hero-of-Time said: PSNProfiles gives you milestones for every 25 you earn but once you pass a certain level it sadly only tracks every 50. I don't think I've logged into PSNProfiles since...2021 maybe? I actually logged in the other day to see if there was anything on there, but apparently I haven't synced it to my PSN account for a minute Gaiden would be a very worth 850th! And that auto-pop just makes a brilliantly short game all the shorter Edited 3 hours ago by Julius 1
