Goron_3 Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 If there really is hardware it'll probably be some kind of new accessory like a camera and/or a new WiiU SKU with more internal memory. The biggest thing it could possibly be is an early look at the next handheld but I wouldn't put money on that (though tenner says they go back to the Gameboy brand on the next iteration). The next handheld will definitely lose the DS branding imo, just as the next home console will lose the Wii branding. It just doesn't resonate with the market in the same way as it used to; it's too intertwined with the casual audience.
nekunando Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 How anyone can think Nintendo releasing a phone would be a good idea amazes me. I don't want to get drawn into reasons why a Nintendo phone would or wouldn't work or be a good idea, but a DS phone (or something similar) is something that I would personally love I'm pretty sick of most conversations moving towards profits and what Nintendo should and shouldn't do and how far out of touch they are. I'd be all over a phone that I'd have on me all the time with the ability to play countless Nintendo classics as well as new content. It would be much more convenient and portable so, in that respect at least, it is a good idea! Aren't any of us allowed to dream any more? I would never predict it to happen or expect it to suddenly turn Nintendo's fortunes around if it somehow did materialise, but I want one.
Fierce_LiNk Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Not to shit on anyone's ideas or preferences, but if there was one company who I think shouldn't make a phone or who couldn't be trusted to pull it off, it's Nintendo. They're not diverse enough and don't have the technological know-how to make something like a phone. It would be extremely barebones. Leading features that are available, standard features would be missing. It wouldn't be state of the art. It definitely shouldn't happen. Even if it did happen, it wouldn't replace the majority of people's phones. It would rather be the next handheld that "just happened to have features similar to a phone". There's no way a significant audience out there would replace their iPhones, Samsung Galaxy S4s, Nexus, HTC One, etc for something like this. No way. It's suicide.

But literally the only reason you would be buying the phone is to play Nintendo games...all the other features/software/apps on it would almost certainly be outclassed by any phone put out by manufacturers who know what they are doing with years of fine tuning their apps and OS under their belt. In that case, it makes more sense to want Nintendo to put their games onto existing phone app stores than make their own phones.

I have a BlackBerry Curve that I only really use to call, text or sometimes check the internet. All I'd want is a smaller, phone-sized 3DS that I can also use to text and make calls. I don't really care about anything else I'm not after logic or a debate about whether it would be right for Nintendo, the consumer or whoever. It's just a device that would be ideal for me : peace:

If Nintendo did create a phone, it would probably include some of the things that you want, but I imagine that it would miss features and support a lot of consumers would be looking for in a phone. App support, for example. Considering all the hoo-har in the past about friendcodes and the fact that voice chat is an issue in games, it seems naive to expect Nintendo to create a device which...relies on people exchanging their numbers and communicating through voice and text messaging. Ha, imagine that, you CAN text you friends, but only through using one of the preset messages.

I always get the impression that if all the posts in a conversation aren't read properly, comments like that will end up implying that I think Nintendo should make a phone and that it's coming at E3 I'm sure you don't mean to direct that at me as such but I wouldn't expect Nintendo to make a phone of any description. Just for clarity, once again, a Nintendo DS Phone is just something that I would want personally but will obviously never get : peace:

Maybe somebody in the modding community will fuse an already existing phone together with a DS/3DS and create something like that. I imagine that a GBA phone would be easier to achieve, since it's only got the one screen. Could see that working.
yesteryeargames Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 It will be some sort of qol, or NFC related accessory. There will not be any new proper hardware or revisions there really is no need to right now.
Serebii Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 It will be some sort of qol, or NFC related accessory. There will not be any new proper hardware or revisions there really is no need to right now. You forget that Nintendo have said there won't be hardware revealed...
S.C.G Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I think we need some sort of distinction between actual hardware and accessories. Personally I'd deem consoles as being hardware, whereas toys with NFC chips inside I'd only class as being accessories by definition.
liger05 Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 It will be some sort of qol, or NFC related accessory. There will not be any new proper hardware or revisions there really is no need to right now. I think the 3DS sales trajectory right now suggests its needs a revision to kick start sales.
Debug Mode Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 You forget that Nintendo have said there won't be hardware revealed... Which means next to nothing in this situation. Sure, it's a first for outright denial, but Nintendo have never been in such a desperate situation. Of course they'd deny things considering sales numbers tend to plummet when a new revision is announced (which usually comes when it's just around the corner to prevent too sluggish of a period). 3DS sales are falling after a very good stretch. Wii U still needs all the sales it can get. Don't get me wrong, I'm not completely convinced we'll even get a revision of any hardware, it's still up in the air for me. But looking at the general business environment, a new 3DS revision seems kind of likely and a sneak peek of the newly suggested 'quality of life' platform is also plausible.
Goron_3 Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I think the 3DS sales trajectory right now suggests its needs a revision to kick start sales. The 2DS was a revision though and it didn't have much of an effect, and that was alongside Pokemon!
Hogge Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I wouldn't be surprised if the next portable Nintendo console is... the Wii U. To my knowledge, all Wii U games are purchasable in digital format. So... a two screen portable console where everything is stored on a built in hard drive or flash memory.
Ronnie Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I'm pretty sure if they could make the Wii U fit in your pocket, they would have done it already.
Hogge Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I'm pretty sure if they could make the Wii U fit in your pocket, they would have done it already. Not really. It's been out for a year and a half and at earliest it would be out in November this year. By that time the Wii U, which wasn't particularly powerful even back then, will be two years old. The PS Vita is a full year older and has performance comparable to the PS3. Imagine three years of technical advancements over the Vita. It should be possible to by now create a console that's every bit as powerful as the Wii U. The question is: at what price and what battery life. But at the same time, I don't see it to be particularly likely either. Espescially now that the Wii U has flopped so hard.
Ronnie Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I don't think two years is enough time to shrink a big console (+ high res screen and power brick) into something the size of a 3DS. I can't even handle Gamecube level visuals.
liger05 Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 The 2DS was a revision though and it didn't have much of an effect, and that was alongside Pokemon! Correct but I think they need a premium model to give 3DS owners a reason to upgrade. The 2DS wasnt the answer for that.
Goron_3 Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Correct but I think they need a premium model to give 3DS owners a reason to upgrade. The 2DS wasnt the answer for that. So you're thinking more along the lines of a revision that will appeal to those that already have the console? Like a 3DS with a better screen? I could see that happening but it would get bloody confusing for a new consumer? Boy: Mummy I want a 3DS! Mum: Do you mean a 2DS or the new 3DS with a better screen? Does the XL play games that the 3DS plays? And what's a gameboy?

Goron_3 Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 That's why I always included pictures of the boxes of my desired gifts on my birthday/Christmas lists, and URLs to where to purchase :p Haha! Tbh, if they did announce a 3DS XL with a better screen I would buy it day 1, simply because I don't play my 3DS anymore because I just can't enjoy that screen size for games like Luigi's Mansion and Mario Golf, but the screen quality is very poor. It'd be Day 1 for me.
Ronnie Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I bet Santa thinks you're a barrel of laughs. That made me LOL
