Fierce_LiNk Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 The BBC are running an article on this. It seems to be something that quite a few people have been talking about lately. More than two-thirds of the UK public believe the £8.77bn cost of the London 2012 Olympics was worth the money, according to a ComRes poll for the BBC. It indicates 74% would also welcome the Games back to Britain. The results suggest people are more active since the Olympics, with 11% exercising more than a year ago, rising to 24% for those aged 18 to 24. The London showpiece, together with the Paralympics, cost more than three times the original budget of £2.4bn. Recent government research suggests the UK economy received a £9.9bn boost in trade and investment from staging the Games. From my point of view, the Olympics were something that I didn't appear to be that bothered about during the process and the build up to it. But, once it hit, I was engrossed. I also enjoyed the atmosphere in the country, even turning on the radio and hearing commentators being really excited about it. So, from my point of view, it was worth it. But, there's a lot of arguments either way.
Ramar Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I think you hit the nail on the head. I was so cynical before hand but loved it during. Cheering on Mo Farah in the pub was a highlight. For me, worth it.
Mr-Paul Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Well worth it. I had the privilege of being part of it, working as part of the broadcasting team in the Aquatics Centre, for three weeks. Best time of my life. Even if you take away my personal involvement, it regenerated a very run-down area of London, created an amazing feel-good spirit in which most of the nation got engrossed in, has inspired young people to take part in physical activity more often, and was full of world class performances from the best athletes in the world. A true once in a lifetime experience.
Ashley Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 London was really quiet, so it was worth it Nah, like others I was cynical beforehand but it was a good atmosphere. Shame my mother got married in the middle of it and I had to leave!
Rummy Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Well...I'm in one of the boroughs that apparently spent the most on the fucking torch, so I was a bit knobbed off by that but then in the grand scheme it hasn't quite directly affected me yet and maybe I don't care that much. As for the events themselves...I saw none. I didn't follow it too much either, but being in SE I had plenty chat with folks about them. Whilst it disrupted a bit, from what I heard from people I knew who went to see events it was fairly positive. What I heard from people who DIDN'T go, it was fairly positive. Even me, myself, who wasn't really following it or owt, was fairly positive. I enjoyed the buzz, the hype, the general chat and talk - it felt like a good time and a unification of people. I liked that. I understand some businesses stuggled, their trade was mashed because of it, I didn't like knowing that. It's a shame such a big event comes and disadvantages the small businesses. I don't know the grander financial figures, of what we spent as to what we apparently got in, which does matter a lot to me in the current climate. HOWEVER, I think the 'current climate' is very relevant. From what I saw on the whole, there was so much positivity and happiness of sorts amongst everyone generally, something you really really wouldn't ever get otherwise, that I think they've done a lot. It's hard to quantify or measure the impact of something on people's morale, and then people's morale on the country as a whole, but I think generally...it was something good that we needed. Financially, as I said I don't know the balances, but if we didn't lose more than say £100 million...for the benefit it did to the country's spirit...I'd say it was maybe worth it.
Beast Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 I loved watching the games and watched quite a bit of it. I enjoyed every second of it.
Charlie Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Absolutely worth it. The whole country was so positive for a month. Loved every minute of them. The highlight being Super Saturday. Had loads of guys round in the flat and isntead of the usual pre-night out music we were engrossed in the Games.
