The Blu-ray Collection Thread

Recommended Posts

Okay so as most of you know, recently I have bought a Playstation 3 and, as a lot of you who read the 'What Have You Bought?' thread, I've been getting on everybody's nerves by asking them about blu-rays because I've become slightly obsessed so I thought a thread might be best.

I've recently started to collect blu-rays and I'm slowly getting the DVDs I have on blu-ray. I eventually want to get Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings but for now, I have:

Sucker Punch

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

The Matrix

The Matrix Reloaded

The Matrix Revolutions

Scarface

I've made this thread so if anybody buys any blu-rays, they can talk about them in here and maybe give tips to people thinking of buying a movie on blu-ray, whether the picture's any good or the sound or whatever. Lord knows I need help sometimes in thinking if it's worth buying on blu-ray but I've been fortunate enough to find great ones so far.

The one I've heard that isn't good is The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy set. The Extended Version ones are supposed to be the greatest blu-rays but the Motion Picture Trilogy, with just the movies alone, aren't supposed to be that great.

So yeah, hopefully this thread won't get locked or banned or whatever and hopefully we'll see some people coming forward with some blu-rays! I'll write some reviews on what I think of the quality later. :)

I too am starting to consider replacing my DVDs with BluRays. Will probably give the DVDs to my parents as they like the same sort of stuff as I do, and they're old so less likely to get BluRay.

I currently have

Star Trek (XI) - Intend to get the other 10 on BluRay, as well as TOS, TNG and Enterprise as they're all out soon (TOS all out now, TNG S1 & 2 now)

Pixar Films: Cars, Cars 2, The Incredibles, Monsters Inc, Ratatouille, Toy Story 1, 2 & 3, Wall-E

Doctor Who - Specials, Seasons 5 & 6. Season 6 had a major bug in that required me to send discs back. It had severe grain on over a third of the screen in many episodes.

Torchwood - Miracle Day (Intend to get Season 1-3)

LOST - Seasons 1-6

Stargate Universe Season 1 (Season 2 never came out. Intended to get the full Stargate Atlantis)

The Matrix Trilogy

Scott Pilgrim VS The World

The Social Network

Fantastic Four

The Avengers Assemble Boxset (Has all the films)

Cloverfield

Chronicle

Ted

I never get DVDs anymore if there is a BluRay alternative

What I remember, I'll update with more if I remember

Firefly

Serenity

Serenity (Reel Heroes)

Serenity (Steelbook)

Battlestar Galactica

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan

Caprica (French)

Dollhouse

The Sarah Connor Chronicles

The Lord of the Rings: Extended Trilogy

The Lion King

Finding Nemo (Import)

Star Wars Saga

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Seasons 1-3

LEGO Star Wars: The Padawan Menace

Bourne Trilogy

The Dark Knight Trilogy

Back to the Future Trilogy

Jurassic Park Trilogy

Star Trek: The Next Generation Films

Pan's Labarynth

Red Dwarf: Back to Earth

Red Dwarf X

Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva

Scott Pilgrim Vs the World

Green Lantern

The only one I have a problem with is Star Trek: Insurrection - the picture looks wrong. I think they got the aspect ration wrong as it looks kind of squashed. It's a terrible film anyway.

Funnily enough, I'm not really all that bothered about replacing my DVDs with Blu-rays. With the jump from VHS to DVD, I couldn't wait to ditch all my cassettes for discs, but not this time around.

I'm only limiting it to a few select movies (like the LOTR Extended Editions and The Dark Knight trilogy) and for all purchases that I've made since early 2007 (when I got my PS3). Just can't be arsed to do it all over again for everything and I don't really care enough for most of my collection (particularly the TV shows, where the original master is poor quality anyway for most shows).

That being said, I do still intend on upgrading my Ghiblies from DVD to Blu-Ray (Ponyo looks ASTOUNDING in HD! :o ), but not till their all out - then I can get em all in one go :)

I'm not replacing all of my DVDs but most of them. Like I don't think things like Borat or The Dictator or anything like that would be worth buying on blu-ray. I really want to get all of the Disney movies, The Hunger Games, The Twilight Saga (don't you judge me! lmao), Sweeney Todd, all of the Muppets and all of the Die Hard movies so much. Although in saying that about The Hunger Games, I might wait until they're all released and then pick them up on blu-ray in a nice boxset. I want to get The Dark Knight trilogy as well. Mainly, I just really want boxsets or boxsleeves because I really like my Scarface and my Matrix Trilogy one, haha.

At the moment I'm only buying new films on Blu-ray and they only tend to be my favourites.

So I'm building a Marvel collection, of...

Captain America

Thor

Avengers Assemble

(will buy the Iron Man Trilogy on Blu-ray)

Also have...

The Dark Knight Trilogy

Senna

I tend to buy Blu-rays on the basis of if I think the film deserves that little bit extra visual wow, so for instance I'll probably buy Dredd on Blu-ray, and also the likes of Star Trek Into Darkness, The Life of Pi, The Hobbit Trilogy etc...

Otherwise I'll just get the film on DVD as it's cheaper.

I am looking to build a collection of the BBC Nature series though, like Planet Earth, Frozen Planet, Life, Africa etc... so I may well get those on Blu-ray too! #Shiny

People might have noticed me going on Blu-ray buying sprees from time to time. :heh: Having had an old 4:3 box TV for very long, I got myself an awesome 42" TV and a 3D Blu-ray player when I moved out. :D

Since then I've been getting all my films on Blu-ray if available. If there's a 3D version of a film, I go for that as well; I can particularly recommend How To Train Your Dragon and Tangled - they're absolutely gorgeous in 3D, and it genuinely improves the experience, especially so for HTTYD.

I'm definitely not updating my entire DVD collection to Blu-ray, though, only the ones I feel deserve to be seen in the best quality, like The Matrix, The Lord Of The Rings etc. Regarding the latter, it most definitely is one of the best transfers to Blu-ray I have ever seen. They say Blu-ray was made for those films, and I'm inclined to agree.

Star Trek and Life of Pi would be amazing on blu-ray I'd imagine. I really want TT: Closer to the Edge as well. It's an amazing film and I truly adore it and I can just imagine it being magnificent on blu-ray.

Dannyboy, a fellow Potterhead, do you have Harry Potter on blu-ray? If you do, what is the quality like on all of the movies?

I have the epic Wizard's Collection, remember? ;)

I saw them all a while ago, but I don't seem to have taken special note of the quality. I don't recall being disappointed, though, and since I'm used to great Blu-ray quality at this point, it's probably safe to say they were good. :)

Actually, now that I think back, I seem to remember the quality being quite amazing! :D Especially in all the visually impressive scenes. :)

Hey, I wonder if there's a site like Backloggery but for blu-ray movies...

This thread has made me realise how much I miss buying Blu-rays.

There are so many recent releases I still want to own but haven't had the money to spend. I was in a good place with my Blu-ray collection a few years ago, but I suddenly found myself in that dark place of downloading to save money. I later tried to go a bit straighter with my viewing and got into streaming services in a big way, but they don't always cut it.

As truly great as Netflix and other streaming services are, they are fully reliant on a stable Internet connection and rarely provide the awesome supplementary content found on a home release. There's nothing more frustrating than loading up Netflix to watch the next awesome episode of a series, only to having your connection shitting itself for the next few hours of your precious evening.

Yeah, I don't like streaming myself. I love the menus on the blu-ray and all the interactive stuff as well. Take Scarface for instance, there's a counter in the blu-ray edition where it counts how many bullets have been fired and how many times the word "fuck" has been said. I thought it was a funny feature to have. I think it ended up being 230 times "fuck" was used and 6000 bullets were fired. You didn't get this in the DVD version of the movie.

I really want to buy Inception, The Godfather Trilogy, The Dark Knight Trilogy and even the Resident Evil collection. I also imagine the Disney movies looking exceptional as well.

I'm not converting my DVD collection to blu-ray, I just buy new movies on blu-ray if I want them.

I really want to buy Inception

I have this:

inception.jpg

(Again, I love getting special collector's editions. :heh:)

It's absolutely gorgeous in Blu-ray, and I actually got this box as my first ever Blu-ray film, before I even moved and got the TV/Blu-ray player (there's also a DVD version in it). I highly recommend it.

As a side note, while searching for that picture, I stumbled upon a claim that Nolan is converting the film to 3D. That seems like an odd choice at this stage.

The movie has a bunch of really awkward comic transitions between scenes. The scene will freeze, a comic book like filter will be run over it and then it will transition to the next in a really out of place way.

This review does into detail about the change. It really is horrible.
