General Gaming Sales/Charts Discussion

Recommended Posts

Now that's a possibly foolish leap; the flaw in assuming that is true is it doesn't take into account actual playtimes of each console. Sure, every console should last really - but if those going through mutliple ps3s or 360s have played them 5 times longer than their wiis, then I don't think it's fair to determine the latter as being more reliable. Correlation not causation and all that.

Perhaps, but I do know a person who always went out and got a new 360 when his broke (don't forget the 60% failure rate on models in the first year or two). He's on six now.

Yes, longevity in play is a factor, but not when discussing sales figures if they're artificially inflated by people purchasing multiple consoles

I don't see how they are artificially inflated. A sale is a sale, no matter if it's upgrading to a newer model or replacing a broken one. It's no different than buying another machine for the house. If we are talking user numbers then yeah fair enough.

As for you friend, there is no way he has bought six models due to failures. The machine has only been out 7 years, you get a years warranty with a new console, Microsoft also extended this when the whole RROD fiasco started. If he has been buying new consoles then he would have been covered, given that he's practically had one every year since release.

It was about the durability comment. Personally I haven't seen many multiple same console purchases amongst my friends, but I can't claim that as representative either.

It is an over-inflation of sorts though - if previously devs/industry thought of each console sale as a potenial x amount of game sales - it won't be the case with a re-purchased/upgraded console - the owner will already own the games. If it really occurs on a large scale, it'd begin to skew attach ratios in a negative way.

I actually do believe, not neccessarily due to repeat console purchases, that the industry has somehow overinflated itself. The same thing occuring with consoles and disappointing sales seems to be occuring with games too - targets and forecasts are being set too high. If things don't change, the whole thing will collapse. Gears and God of War sales apparently 'have underperformed'.

Sequelitis and franchise milking isn't going to cut it, but it seems developers think that's the way forward and put a lot into it, then they get burned when they don't hit the massive sales they expected. It's turning into the hollywood model, but it doesn't work like that at all.

Needs to go back to basics and good gameplay imo. *If* for some reason there is some massive gaming crash, then it might be indies and the Wii U that comes out on top - IF Nintendo can get decent support from/for them, and other 3rd parties.

No, he actually did do it. He ignores warranty. It's ridiculous

The guy deserves what he gets then. :)

I agree with this.

The thing is, with both Gears and God of War they both looked different to what the fans are used to. God of War was shown as a multiplayer game first and single player game second. Gears looked like a cheap cash in from the start, with Epic handing development duties to someone else.

I picked Gears up at launch and its not a patch on the other games and has felt very much like a spinoff. I plan on getting God of War when it hits £20. Which brings me to my next point.

New releases don't seem to hold their price tags and gamers have caught on to this. The amount of times that a game has dropped by £20 after a few weeks on the market is insane. I've started to hold off on games now, something I should have done a long time ago.

Games such as Dead Space, Metal Gear Rising and God of War in the past I would have snapped up instantly, but why bother if they are going to drop within weeks if release? I think this is another reason for the low sales of big games, especially here in the UK.

Nintendo Press release:

MORE THAN 20 MILLION PHYSICAL COPIES OF NINTENDO 3DS GAMES HAVE BEEN SOLD IN THE U.S.

April 18, 2013

Fueled by strong starts for Luigi's Mansion™: Dark Moon and Pokémon™ Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, and the continued strength of Fire Emblem Awakening, Nintendo 3DS™ crossed 20 million total units of software sold at retail in the United States, according to the NPD Group.

Some notable sales numbers* achieved by Nintendo in March include:

- Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon sold nearly 365,000 physical units in March, and has now sold more than 415,000 combined physical and digital units to date.

- Fire Emblem Awakening sold an additional 64,000 combined physical and digital physical copies in March, and has now sold more than 240,000 combined units to date.

- Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity sold more than 145,000 combined physical and digital units for the month.

- Total sales of Nintendo 3DS software at retail increased by more than 50 percent over March 2012.

That momentum should only grow in the next few months as Nintendo prepares for a massive slate of Nintendo 3DS software releases, including: LEGO® City Undercover: The Chase Begins on April 24, Donkey Kong Country™ Returns 3D on May 24, Animal Crossing™: New Leaf on June 9 and Mario and Luigi™: Dream Team on Aug. 11.

Additionally, in a Nintendo Direct that aired on April 17, Nintendo announced or provided more details about new entrants in the Yoshi's Island™, Mario Party™, The Legend of Zelda™ and Mario Golf™ franchises for the Nintendo 3DS system.

Wii U™ owners have a ton of great games to look forward to from Nintendo and its third-party partners, including Game & Wario™ on June 23, Pikmin™ 3 on Aug. 4, Disney's Planes from Disney Interactive on Aug. 6 and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell® Blacklist™ from Ubisoft® on Aug. 20. At the upcoming E3 trade show in June in Los Angeles, Nintendo expects to show attendees upcoming Wii U games from the Mario Kart™, Super Mario Bros.™ and Super Smash Bros.™ franchises.

*Data regarding physical sales of games in March are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo's internal sales figures. All numbers are specific to the United States only.

Overall year on year sales down 10%

Wow at those Wii U numbers. So that's 2K more than the previous month BUT there was an extra week in March and some games were actually released. Given the release list is looking sparse again these numbers aren't going to pick up any time soon.

No new game > 1m

600k < gowj < gowa < tr, but the diff between each other is less than 10k

hunter / lego fan could be sad

gowa have bundle sku, so you could figure it out.

100k < lego < hunter 3ds+wiiu < 130k

nfs < 10k

IGN4.7(Castlevania) ~ 30k

MH3U:

3DS: 3/5

Wii U: 2/5

Wii U ver is 13th of all Wii U SW LTD.

60.9K < MHU 3DS < 77.4K

40.4K < MHU WiiU < 51.6K

Looks like MH3U combined on both platforms did about the same as Tri on Wii. Good enough :)

Lego City Undercover doing over 100K is also much better than I had expected!

3DS is finally on an upturn; too bad that the new software did nothing to stop the Wii U's decline though (they're probably just gonna give up on it until they can relaunch it in Q3, when the "launch window" software actually launches  )

Lego City doing 100k is pretty decent. I thought it would do less as it bombed over here.

NFS under 10k in America. Thats shockingly low!!!

Wii U sales are awful. The console is on life support in every region with no software in sight. I'm not sure how it will play out in the end but when new consoles come later this year and shops need to find shelve space I think the Wii U and Vita are going to suffer big time. Both consoles are are dead right now.

Pow! Superhero fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us has knocked BioShock Infinite from the top of the UK all-formats chart.

BioShock Infinite dropped into second place during its fourth week of release.

Nintendo's top-notch tactical RPG Fire Emblem: Awakening scored third. The 3DS sensation spurred system sales, too, with the launch of its special edition blue 3DS XL boosting hardware numbers by 49 per cent.

The release of Injustice: Gods Among Us marks the first time a fighting game has hit the UK's top spot in over a year - since UFC Undisputed 3.

Tomb Raider was fourth this week, while Defiance was fifth and FIFA 13 sixth. Black Ops 2, Luigi's Mansion 2, Tiger Woods 14 and Far Cry 3 rounded out the rest of the top 10.

Good to see Fire Emblem getting a strong start.

Glad to see Injustice at the top. I'm absolutely loving it and would love to see the roster grow. Probably one of the only fighting games that would benefit from a next-gen follow up, too.

Feel bad for anyone who relies on you on whether to pull the plug since you say the Wii U is on life support and then it is dead in the same paragraph :p

I am surprised at NFS. It's a fantastic game, but I guess it is a late port and EA didn't exactly market it

Iwata will announce a second straight annual loss tomorrow, losing 18.7 billion yen in the 12 months ended March 31, according to the average of 15 estimates compiled by Bloomberg. For the year started April 1, Nintendo may post operating income of 70 billion-yen, according to the average of 19 estimates -- short of a target he said was a personal “commitment.”

Also from the article:

"While Nintendo struggles with its main business, a weakening of the yen may give some relief, as it boosts the value of overseas earnings. The Japanese currency has depreciated about 13 percent against the U.S. dollar this year and touched a four-year low of 99.95 on April 11.

That may enable the company to post net income of 14 billion yen tomorrow, the company said in January."

http://mobile.bloomberg.com/news/201...tml?cmpid=yhoo

The 100 billion yen operating income goal is for the fiscal year that just started.

Not surprising, if true. Launching a new console is always a money sink, even more so when it's not performing well.
