Ashley Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Not the Lemar song (sorry). Saw this last night and was quite enjoyable. Normally Seth Rogan makes me want to smash things but he was subdued/sidelined and it worked. Falls into the trap of indie cliches at times but a good mix of comedy and melodrama. Out next weekend. Go seeeee! Or don't.
Mr-Paul Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 When I saw your post about it on Facebook I thought you were going to see this
Jimbob Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Wasn't this a TV show back in the 90's/early 00's??.
Jon Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 When I saw your post about it on Facebook I thought you were going to see this I was about to say the same thing. I used to watch this whenever it was on after school. Sally Gray and Flynn were such a team
The Peeps Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 I also thought of the children's gameshow :p Then I watched the trailer. Looks good!
Wesley Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 I've been looking forward to this for a while. Shall we see it together @Ashley?
Wesley Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 What the fuck man? I thought we said we'd go see it together. Agh... you always do this.
Oxigen_Waste Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 It's okay, was expecting better. All comedies are the same, now...
Jon Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 (edited) It's okay, was expecting better. All comedies are the same, now... They all attempt to invoke laughter? That's the objective. Edited November 17, 2011 by Jon
Oxigen_Waste Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 They all attempt to invoke laughter? That's the objective. I have no possible answer to how obtuse that was. C'mon... They're all the same, it's either this Appatow sub genre with little indie quirks and melodrama or flat out gross out homage like Hangover. Not that I don't appreciate both, but it's getting to be time we got something feeling fresh again. I mean, you go and watch Dr. Strangelove, now THAT's what I call a proper comedy!! With lots of attitude and personality! Or Monty Python's Holy Grail!! Nowdays, comedy's true calling is mostly represented in TV series.
Ellmeister Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 It was less funny than I thought it was going to be and in fact had a better story than I thought it was going to be. Also, Anna Kendrick and Bryce Howard who are both stunning made it even better. Sometimes I dislike Seth sometimes he isn't as bad, though all of his films seem to have a need for him to be smoking weed at some point or another. Overall quite a sad but good movie! My girlfriend thought she was going to cry when watching it.
ReZourceman Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Only thought? I think most of the people (admitedly only about 5 or so groups) sounded like they were weeping or sniffling. I did.
Ashley Posted November 27, 2011 Author Posted November 27, 2011 Ever I almost cried and my heart is as hard and black as ReZ's penis.
Coolness Bears Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Spoilers ahead: I felt the film was trying to hard to grab the emotion out of me. It wasn't particularly sad. Maybe since you don't get to know him before hand but that isn't necessarily a negative point. That being said I found the story engaging and JGL put in a good performance. Which I felt help cover up weaker elements of the film. The side characters weren't fleshed out enough. Jonathan Levine sets up a realistic feel and tackles the general cancer issue well but then through some character interactions he breaks that illusion. Too short? odd complaint but I felt it was getting interesting then it ended. Another thing I felt it was too directly focused on cancer (fair enough.) but I felt like you didn't escape from it, should have shown more every day life. I felt it should not have everyone reacting to the cancer all the time. Anna Kendrick is cute and it's Seth Rogans best role as I felt it was still "him" but dialed down a bit. Fairly interesting, sort of humorous approach towards a serious topic that felt like it was trying too hard to get an emotional response. For once I didn't want a character to die though. Solid Effort. The Oscar baiting season has begun! :p
Ellmeister Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 I wasn't far off either. Hewitt's performance was solid.
Dan_Dare Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 I absolutely didn't let out a solitary, testosterone soaked tear during the final stages (loooooooool) of this film. No matter what @Emma says. She cried like a poopy pants, anyway so nyyeeeerr! Cracking film, though. The very fact that it exists is a testament to the quality of the writing - both drama and comedy sides of it. I thought it was ace, and the only real flaw in it that we could come up with is that a lot of the cast felt typecast. JGL was basically that guy from (500) Days of Summer and Seth Rogan was...Seth Rogan, from everything. etc. Other than that, it's one of the best films I've seen in ages.
Coolness Bears Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL *wait I did the same thing.* ...what did you guys tear up at btw out of curiosity?
Ashley Posted December 1, 2011 Author Posted December 1, 2011 How frumpy JGL was. HE SO PURDY NORMALLY.
