Chill out son, we've still got 3 to 4 games of the regular season left.

Or have you given up on that because Man United aren't top?

He's a United fan? Aww, d'oh.

I agree with Ramar. Very early for this, I think. I've got the feeling it's going to be a great World Cup this year. Potentially some great matches. Can't wait.

I'm hoping Mokong or Platty set up a temp board like they did for the 2006 one.

I thought it was a pretty cool idea...

And yes, too early. Domestic season still ongoing, though wrapping up. Start thread/board end of next month, I propose.

I don't think there's been a bad world cup since '94. There's just that buzz about it, plus having 2-3 games on tv a day is some what awesome.

After the season has finished I'll look forward to it, until then there's work still to be done.

OK well this thread can live provided some actual discussion takes place; not "i liek wurld cupz" or "ENGURLUND WILL WAN!" or "this thread should be locked" or "I hate football" or, y'know, anything like any of the posts so far.

There's pretty much nothing else to talk about concerning the world cup, squads haven't even been announced, pre-tournament warm up games don't take place for another month.. So the only talk in here will be "I can't wait" or "I think [nation] will win" etc.

People keep saying England have a great chance this year, personally i think they do. Being part English, i wouldn't mind seeing them lifting the cup this year. But i don't see it, as we have many injuries.

I know the South African crowd are going to be irritating with those horns they blow incessantly throughout every game (like they did in the Confederations Cup), but I believe that it's a better noise than some England band playing the theme to "The Great Escape" again and again and again.

Shit's fucking annoying, I swear to God!

I used to love coming home from school whenever the European Championships or the World Cups were taking place. Coming home and having an evening of football = total bliss. :D

I'm not in World Cup mode yet, either. I won't be until it's Summer. When the League has finished, then I'll be in the right mood.

That temp board in the past was an amazing idea. Who was the guy I was talking to, when we were talking about Phillip Lahm? We couldn't decide if he was a left sided or right sided player. Turns out he's a right footer playing on the left, ala Dennis Irwin. Haha.

Dear god, its been almost 12 years since I sat down to watch the world cup.

Didn't you watch the last one? Not even the final with the now famous Zidane headbutt?

I have one vivid memory of Euro96. Watching Paul Gascoigne chip the ball over the head of Colin Hendry with his left foot, then smashing it past the keeper with his right. Has to be one of my all time favourite goals. Right up there with the Van Basten Volley for me.

My favourite goal of all time is in the audio below. Prizes for if you can guess who scored it.

I'm totally in the World Cup spirit right now, though I am keeping it tightly under wraps until the appropriate moment in time, probably about week before kick off. If an intrepid team of psycho-spelunkers were to burrow into my head right now they would eventually find a massive football stadium of people clapping and dancing to the Wavin' Flags theme on a constant loop. Just turn right at the Porno Palace, past the transparent crystalline Parliament building and then just Barrel Roll right through my Parental Issues and keep on going. You can't miss it.

I'm not really into football at all but I do enjoy the world cup. I adopted South Korea as my nation back when they hosted the thing - hopefully they can have a decent tournament. Still trying to find out where the Koreans go in London to watch the games, hoping to join them at some point for some jokes.

Haha, that's one of my favourite football moments, too. I love it. I smile/laugh every single time.

I know some of the Dutch Translation for that. It's something like "here with the ball is Frank de Boer...Frank de Boer passes the ball, its very good for Dennis Bergkamp. DENNIS BERGKAMP. DENNIS BERGKAMP! DENNIS BERGKAMP!....OARHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I get so happy when watching that clip. What a match that was, as well. By the way, the commentator is Jack Van Gelder, I think, unless my memory is mistaken.

I think the World Cup can bring lots of people together, even those not into football. In that sense, it probably is the best competition in the world. I love the atmosphere when it's World Cup or European Championship Year.

Damn right. I'm not a football fan, except once every two years. It's just a really fun competition that, like you said, can bring people together.

It also helps that my home team are perpetual underdogs, though :heh:

Also, this this year sounds awesome. I mean, it can't get much bigger than a match against Brazil. And apparently, if we get through, we go against Spain. Damn.

Haha, there's been some classic encounters between England and Portugal. They don't need mentioning.

You're right, you've got it hard this year. Not easy fixtures. But, if you put a lot into those games and get through them, you should go quite far. Nani has been in good form for Man United for a good part of this season, so he could be important for you this Summer.

I know you didn't have an easy time during qualifying. And also, I'd be worried for your defence a little, especially against teams like the Ivory Coast and Brazil (not to mention Spain). But, it's football, so you never know what happens. Wouldn't be surprised if Portugal went on a run and did something special.

I watched parts of it I guess, definitely witnessed the Zidanegate scandal, but not like 98, where I literally watched every single match. Some of them multiple times, because I was a sad bastard.

Haha, I was the same, don't worry. I was probably more into football then than I am now. (isn't that a scary thought?)

Funny enough, somebody has uploaded the whole England vs Argentina match from 1998 onto youtube. Awesome. Sadly, it's taped from ESPN, so it doesn't feature the same commentary that we'll remember. :(
