Nintendo arguably has the widest range of IP in the industry, covering a vast number of genres. But notably, there are some big exclusions- Nintendo does not currently own any IP in the First - or Third - Person Shooter range, it has no current interest in sports. I'm sure there are a few more we can think of.

So i present to the masses a new wish list in the form of The Great Big IP Generating Machine. With Knobs On. Is there a genre Nintendo need? What could they bring to table? Does one of Nintendo's familiar franchises need a reboot?

Lets hear your thoughts.

They lack the realistic racing simulators Darkjak keeps going on about, though. They also lack.......I dunno. Flight simulators?

What Jonnas said.

@Dyson, I think Pikmin is about as close as they're getting to RTS at the moment.

Also, for 3rd person shooters, they have Battalion Wars, which is a bit RTSish in itself.

At one point (In 05 I think) they were making Nintendo Pennant Chase Baseball, but it was cancelled.

The problem with sports games is licensing.

Take US sports for example , the NFL has an exclusive deal with EA , MLB has an exclusive 3rd party deal with 2k sports (so we could effectively see a licensed game if Nintendo decided to resurrect Pennant Chase).

That would leave the NBA and NHL , there could be a market for an NBA game , although I am not sure how well Courtside faired saleswise on the Cube. The NHL is too much of a minority , even EA can't be bothered supporting Nintendo consoles with their franchise , and 2k Sports may as well not bother if 2k9 is anything to go by.

You then have the issues with Soccer and Nintendo would struggle to break the FIFA/Pro Evo stronghold , could well be licensing issues there.

Probably not quite fair to say that they have no interest in sports games though , especially when we get treated to the likes of Mario Srikers Charged and Mario Super Sluggers (or whatever they are calling it now). [/sarcasm]

Would love to see more in the way of RTS games also as the control scheme is tailer made. I would happily make do with just Pikmin 3 at this stage.

Realistic Sports games anyway they have:

Mario Golf

Mario Tennis

Mario Baseball

Mario Soccer/Football

Wii Sports

Ect.

I don't want Nintendo putting resources into more sports games than that. The ones that EA and other companies make are good enough for most people.

I feel the same about realistic racers. There are already lots them out their. Nintendo just needs to attract them to the Wii

Also Metroid Prime isn't really a shooter.

Personally, I'd like to see and OTS/FPS game. Although, from Retro or someone, not from the EAD teams. And one with really good online.

Another genre I'd like to see is Stealth Action.

Nice thread! ill just summarize what could be a long-winded post by saying that I love when Nintendo tackles a certain genre with genuine intentions of being the best of its kind. For example

On-rail shooters (Star Fox)

Survival horror (Eternal Darkness)

Puzzle (Gyromite)

Platformer (SMB, Metroid)

Sports (Punch-Out, NCAA Basketball, Ken Griffey Baseball, )

Adventure (Zelda)

Racing (Super Mario Kart, Wave Race)

Flight Sim (Pilotwings)

FPS (Goldeneye, Prime)

Fighting (Killer Instinct)

Playing any of these games at the time they were released gave you the feeling that Nintendo were spending some dough and genuinely trying to outdo the competition. More of this please!

In regards to the sports series, Nintendo needs to do what it did with the N64 - keep it simple. Mario Tennis 64 was awesome, mainly because it played so well and was just like playing a normal tennis game, albeit with Mario characters. The cube one seems to have all these gimmicky moves and rubbish like that. If they kept it simple and focused on the gameplay it'd rock!

Excellent point.

That was one reason why I was really looking forward to Pennant Chase Baseball , and was gutted when it was cancelled. Straight baseball with none of that gimmicky crap that we got with the very disappointing Mario Superstar Baseball.

Well, Metroid hardly is a first person shooter. MP3 did step closer, but it's still an adventure. Wii sports isn't exactly a sports game either.

I don't think Nintendo need sports games, apart from their classic extreme sports games (Waverace, 1080, Excitebike).

Nintendo need a first person shooter. I don't want a clone of Killzone or Halo, but rather a spiritual successor to Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. No two gun at a time-limit, no cooldown, no aliens that look like retarded bumbibears.

And as I've stated before: Nintendo need an equivelant to Gran Turismo, Forza or Sega GT. Nintendo launch the game in the budget range, but with few cars. Then they could offer additional cars and tracks as DLC. One car for 100 Wii Points or lets say a "classic muscle car" kit consisting of 10 cars for 500? If they see that the game is a failure they haven't invested too much and there's no big problem. If it's a success they can keep churning out additional cars and tracks until the sequel comes out for the Wii HD.

Nintendo also need to get a new Pilotwings installment out. Perhaps some kind of MMO or similar.

Maybe a traditional style fighting game as well?

Are you really sure about that? Specially the sports part.

And you need to update your sig. :heh:

Nah, I think that'd undermine Smash Bros. in a way - Smash Bros. exists (sorry I forgot it!) mainly for the reason that it's not traditional. I would mind seeing an updated version of Fighters' Destiny however!

Well they've not done the general sandbox action game (read: GTA rip off). Though the budget required to do the thing justice is probably more than they are willing to spend which is a shame because although those games aren't big seller in Japan as such, when Capcom took the GTA games over there, they did relatively well. And I'm sure sales from the rest of the world would more than make up for it - especially in the US.

And if they really want to guarantee a purchase from me, they should set it in the future, and you get to play as Captain Falcon as he hunts down criminals. So in some ways, it would more like crackdown in that you're the good guy. The trick being you can apprehend your adversary any way you like, but there will be consequences for causing excess casualties along the way. So when you start, the police forces tend to ignore you, if you're good at saving folks and arresting the bad guys, then they will be more willing to help you and give extra missions looking for people even they are too scared to go after - you're public reputation will improve too and there would be benefits of this too. Conversely, destroy everything in your path in your attempt to catch the crook and the next time, the police will be focusing on catching you as much as the bad guy - so you have to get in, do the job and get out before they know it. Causing mayhem would improve your criminal reputation and the bad guys would fear you as they know you're willing to do anything to stop them. So there would be advantages to both style of play.

I know it all sounds too violent for an in house Nintendo game but I'd like to see them attempt it - usually games like this that are published by Nintendo are done by second/third parties

I'm sure they way I just explained it may sound a bit crap, but it sounded good when I thought about it. But I've not played many games of this kind of genre so if something like this already exists then just ignore me...

edit: yeah I realise that I just said I just said about using characters from a universe that already exists, but the content would still be all new genre for them - of course they could go with all new characters, but if they have a world ripe for it's use, I don't see the problem as such.

I don't get the big difference to crime-based "sandbox" (i.e. fairly linear stories with a free roaming area) and games like Zelda and Metroid (except from the ability to kill innocent/good people).

Well for starters, they tend to have a more pick up and play, arcade-esque style of gameplay. There generally isn't a point in turning on Zelda or Metroid if you want a quick thrill. I think those games, as great as they are, require more involvement from the player but sometimes you just want dumb fun.

For me, Zelda and Metroid are very much adventure games as you explore your environment and progress a little farther with each new item acquired - the focus is really on the world you find yourself in rather than the people who populate it. Link and Samus progress on a physical level with new upgrades, but their personality remains the same - the sandbox games see your basic abilities remain constant and it's your character's personality which progresses.

Well, Zelda has very little to do beyond the regular missions. In GTA you can take a motorcycle and do tricks, or take a car and race around the city. You can put a bunch of cars in a pile and watch what the stupid AI tries to do about.

A sandbox game lets you do whatever you want to do.

But a futuristic sandbox game isn't my cup of tea. I'd like Nintendo to make a game that takes place in maybe the 1950's. I can agree that you should be a cop rather than a criminal. Maybe it could be a bit like Fast & Furious, where the main character is an FBI agent whom while being a cop still has friends pursuing criminal acts.

I do wish people would stop hoping for a realistic ips from nintend cause it just ain't gonna happen and I don't think it has ever happened.

At least in house anyway.. they may have published a few.

NIntendo are always going to appel to the japanese market first and foremost.. And we are all better off with that aim..

Nintendo.

Rockstar.

Body Motherfuckin' Harvest 2 baby!

I would cream myself if they did. Multiple times.

A sandbox game from Nintendo would be in the Nintendo style. It wouldn't be realistic at all unless it was outsourced. And I think thats a good thing. Nintendo would be much better off trying to get Rockstar to make a GTA game for the Wii or the next console, than to make their own GTA clone.

If we are going down that route, then all the genres Nintendo doesn't currently deal in are best left to companies who do specialise and we can close this thread right now and file it under pointless :blank:

I didn't say I wouldn't like to see a sandbox game from them, just not a GTA clone. There are way too many GTA clones now, I'd rather see a more original sandbox game from them.
