Why is it that a specialist shop, such as GAME, can't get new releases in stock and keep the shelves filled with them when a company such as HMV can?
It's crazy huh?

I can't actually remember the last time I went to a GAME store, they've been that bad for such a long time now. :nono:

And while you're right that HMV are much better with new releases, their prices tend to be a bit OTT for my liking.

When we had the Silent Hill launch fiasco I went to HMV on the Friday and sure enough they had it in stock, but for £40! I just ordered it online from Zavvi for over 15 quid less.

I know buying online isn't always ideal, what with the risk of stuff getting lost in the post and obviously not being able to trade-in games etc... But when the difference in price is soooo immense, I think it's pretty pointless going to game shops these days. :hmm:

Then again, I still remember the good old days of going to John Menzies and buying C64 games for like 99p! So maybe that has something to do with it too.

I've noticed recently that my local GAME stores aren't stocking the kinda of titles you'd expect a place like them to be and if I'm after something other than a Nintendo game or some licensed rubbish, I have to go HMV or order online.

The only time I buy games from the shops now is when I trade stuff in. As you said, you save around a tenner per game and you usually get it a day early!

The whole fiasco with GAME and their stock of Wii games is beyond a joke now though.

I've never bought from GAME in store, however I have purchased goods from them over the tubes, which worked very well (they were extraordinarily fast). But that was for Red Steel 2...and I live in Australia. The land of awkward stereotypes.

Yeah GAME are absolutely aweful now!

I went into one the other day and like you say it was full of absolutely crap casual titles! 1 racks of top 10, 1 racks of absolute bollocks, and like 2 racks of GAME's Trade In bullshit!

I haven't bought a game in store for an absolute age now!

Online (with the awesomeness of Shopto, and the constant sales on play, hmv, zavvi etc...) is the only way to go!

The GAME in Oldham... is shit. It's small, but it has about one shelf for Wii games, and not even a chart.

The HMV in Oldham... is awesome. It's not a megastore, but its game section is lovely and robust, and there are tonnes of Wii and DS content there, and they're pretty savvy with the sales, too.

Maybe it just depends on where abouts in the country you are.

I'm also finding HMV stores to be better at stocking titles than dedicated gaming stores. For example Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World didn't even come in stock at either of the GAME stores in my town, but HMV had several copies and sold out. There was actually still a copy there the other week when I checked.

When I get there the bloke then tells me the system for taking instore credit is down so I would have to pay cash. I told him im only using my credit and could he not just send the game down to the other store and let me pay down there? Apparently they couldn't do this, despite being the same company. Jerks. I walked out of there empty handed.

They can't. They'd have to authorise a transfer with head office (who aren't open on the weekend) and then do it. Similarly, its a Saturday, the busiest day of the week. Priorities shift :heh:

However, you could have purchased it for cash. Taken it to the first store. Refunded the cash then bought it again using the credit.

Combination of a) people more likely to go to Game to buy games and b) supply and demand.

Nice idea regarding the buying, refunding and then buying it back, will have to remember that one. :)

Its a bit hard to see if there is going to be a demand for the game when they aren't going to stock it in the first place. They haven't had Sakura Wars in since it launched ( both stores ) yet Gamestation, which is just around the corner and owned by GAME, had the title in stock. Clearly they just aren't ordering titles such as these.

Stores don't order the games. Head Office does.

Basically Game staff are just puppets to Head Office. And whatever wank stain regional manager they have.

I already sold my soul to Game for £6.35/hour. Shame.

I remember applying for a few jobs with GAME only to be unsuccessful. I was only about 20 and confused as even though I held sound retail experience, a customer service level 3 NVQ and a passion for gaming and wrote online for a gaming website I still wasn't what they were looking for. Then I kept seeing the shy or (unfortunately) sweaty staff amongst a seemingly obsessed love for gothically fashioned girls that they kept hiring and realised it was a company that was clearly messed up from the inside. I wasn't bitter in the end, glad I wasn't accepted tbh.

Now I get college kids who have an interest in IT and retail saying they want jobs on the highstreet with companies like GAME and I have to pretend they are professional and will accept them on their qualities and qualifications whereas I'm really not sure if that's even a possibility in that company...

You can't defeat GAME at level 20. That's one of the sidequests most leave until mid-way so wait until you've reached around level 40-45 to go back and take it down.

Also you might want to improve your NVQ level a bit so that you're party have more defensive abilities. If you grind for a few hours in your local town and take down some regular chavs or sainsburys customer service then you should get there in no time.

Hope that helps.

This post is so good! Gave me a good chuckle after a poop day in work. Cheers!

Thanks. Your inventive scenario is potentially right. The only way I've seen some level 20 players in GAME/Gamestation is if they have been groomed/recruited by a Level 40 player. I won't even go there.

I should have just cheated and imported some tits onto my chest. A win-win scenario.

Now, who's up for some Lon Lon Milk...:D

I've heard some people claim they don't hire the 'OTT' staff who clearly want to be there, because they use it for the discount/freebies.

Besides, its not a place to work if you have a passion for gaming. You'll become used to selling Catz over Kingdom Hearts and having to flog add-ons that are worth shit.

Plus, you get a constant barrage of customers who seem to think you're there to listen to them talk about why they think the PS3 is better than the Xbox or vice versa, or tell you all about how top of the range their PC is.

So pleased I didn't get the Game or Gamestation job to be honest! The people working there aren't my type of people at all! They speak another language it seems and working with these clearly 'big headed and opinionated' morons would do my head in! They clearly employed young staff to pay em less and girls!

Thing which makes me laugh is I asked for Metroid Trilogy and the man went looking in the PS3 section...says it all really!

also, job cuts and lowering hours and the closure of two stores here eventually means I may have had to leave anyway!

How sexist of you Owen :heh:

Firstly..i didn't 'thank' your post. who did? haha

Look, there are two types of people who work at game.

  1. 800lb men who smell and complain when they need to find a game at the other end of the store.
  2. 80lb men/women that never see the light of day, as evident by their blindingly white skin which can be used as an alternate light source. Rarer than Big-Foot.
