rokhed00 Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 A friend told me recently that it wasn't safe to download torrents if you have Virgin Media as an ISP anymore, anyone know if there's any truth in this?
Guest Jordan Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Totally true. Virgin are now monitoring active torrents (eg: ones with alot of seeds/peers). Don't bother with them anymore... change ISP.
Tom Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 cheers for the heads up! is it only movie torrents they are looking out for, or any torrent? Or is it just torrents with a large number of seeds? sorry for all the questions, but changing ISP isn't an option so i need to work out what i can and can't do.
Kirkatronics Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Wouldnt encrypting your connection prevent being able to?
Guest Stefkov Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Shit. Seriously? I only have a few more weeks left at home I guess. Sod it.
Guest Jordan Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 No. BT, Orange, Carphone Warehouse, Virgin and AOL are now working with the BPI (British Prat Industry) to monitor active torrents with a lot of seeds. You get on their trackers, you get listed, you get a strike. Two more... and you're booted off your ISP. Hense i'm going with o2/Be... which seem to respect their users privacy.

In fairness, download this stuff is breaking the law, and torrents are mostly used for sharing illegal content. I may switch to Be too, but I can see why the other ISPs are doing it.

Guest Jordan Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 What about talktalk? Talktalk are owned by the Carphone Warehouse.
MoogleViper Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Talktalk are owned by the Carphone Warehouse. How will we know if we are being tracked? I've been torrenting loads recently.
Guest Jordan Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 You can't... They monitor the IP addresses from the torrents, resolve them... and there you go. Don't torrent, change your ISP or sort out your security (don't ask about that... I'm not helping you hide yourself. Nothing personal.)

Where I live only talktalk will offer us broadband.
Strider Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 What about Sky? They arn't owned by anyone else are they?

A mate of mine is with Be and he got a letter telling him off for downloading Sims 2.
Guest Jordan Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 A mate of mine is with Be and he got a letter telling him off for downloading Sims 2. Ha, seriously? I'll have to find another ISP idea then.
Platty Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 I'm not a heavy user of torrents. Never download any music. But I do like to get my Lost and Heroes. I'm with o2 so we'll see how it goes. But at the end of the day if we do have to stop we've had a good run over the years
Tom Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 its the tv downloads i'm really going to miss my cinema pass has almost removed the need for film downloads and i have a heap of music to be getting on with. i wish one of the big US networks did official downloads and just inserted ad breaks, or you could pay for an online subscription or something like that.
Happenstance Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Im currently in the middle of leaving Virgin for the Post Office's broadband. Bastards that Virgin are though they keep cutting my download speed from 1.7 Megs to 576Kbps almost daily. I havent downloaded anything big in almost a month, just maybe a podcast every few days. I can only assume they are being spiteful tossers and messing with my connection as I told them I was leaving.
Charlie Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 There are other ways of getting your daily fix than torrents, you know.

Before the NTL: Telewest merger, Telewest were one of the best, if not the best ISP in the country. Fantastic speeds, great customer service, no caps, no ratio'd speeds. Now its just bull shit.
KKOB Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 This makes me sad. And annoyed we've just signed up for 12months of 10mb virgin broadband. What's the point of their XL or L package if you don't download loads of crap, usually torrents. My big love is high quality TV Shows, and the odd album i'm not sure if i want to buy yet. Torrents are brilliant, and the government are a bunch of dickheads when it comes to privacy and general technology issues. *pulls out hair* Isn't it just people who have downloaded games who are getting fined £300 and the first 500 not to pay will get taken to court? Either way it's fucking retarded, game companies shouldn't burn their consumers, legal or otherwise. There should be other ways to deal with piracy than fines and court action. Dicks.
Sanchez Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 A mate of mine is with Be and he got a letter telling him off for downloading Sims 2. Possible, but there's a good chance they just got sent an ip and a file and probably threatened to tell the user with legal action. They wouldn't share your name back with them. Also every isp does this.

They ARE monitoring your useage, but as yet there's no penalty for downloading illegally. All they will do is send a letter to the person who's name is on the bill asking them to stop the illegal activity. The ISPs are just trying to make the BPI think that they actually give a damn whilst protecting their own business interests (hence they won't boot your connection) and their customers (no details are given to the BPI, the letter comes straight from the ISP). The worst punishment you can expect from an ISP at the moment is them throttling your connection speed, though im pretty sure that only happens if you go over your download limit (because you're then costing the ISP money and affecting their profit margins).
