You're not going to be simultaneously using a hard drive whilst online, and if you have Wii Speak plugged in then you won't be using the keyboard.

Even though all I have hooked up to it is my charging station and sometimes a keyboard, I've already got a hub set aside for when Wii Speak and HDD support come out. Hopefully the next Wii does Wireless N, then I'll never have to think about running an ethernet cable.
Calza Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 I just think Nintendo are handling this the complete wrong way, I just don't see how this can work without a headset. Sure i'm used to using a headset on my pc for Skype and CSS as well as on the 360 but I really couldn't imagine my self talking over the internets any other way. And thats not even bringing in how much of a twat you will look just sitting (or standing...) in a room just shouting to heard, at least with a headset people could assume what your up to, however I don't think there would be a better excuse to say "I'm talking to the internet".
Emasher Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 Personally, I'm hoping the Wii just sees it as a USB headset, so we can use one of them instead.

I think it will be as good as hands free on a mobile. It think a game like animal crossing makes you look like a twat anyway regardless of the user interaction... But anyway, this looks an excellent grooming tool
Hellfire Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 I personally think wearing a headset makes you look retarded and it's a nice idea to make for a more social experience. Not to mention that I highly doubt you'll need to shout However, I don't really see a reason stopping 3rd parties from making a headset now that games will probably start having voice chat.
Emasher Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 I personally think wearing a headset makes you look retarded Some do, some look pretty good though.
Blue_Ninja0 Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Get a USB multiway? It's not really a problem. And since when is the Wii compatible with those things? If it is, it's news to me. It's not a computer where you can install drivers freely.
Tyson Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 I can see there being alot of awkward silences on Animal Crossing, you can only pretend to be excited about catching a bug so many times before someone latches on. That's the good thing about typing, you have the excuse of "I'm not a quick typer".
M-PG71C Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 I'm not too sure what to think of this but if there is a way to trick it and use a headset instead...then I think it'll be pretty cool.
Dog-amoto Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Does anyone know if we can use this for older games like Mario Kart?
Hellfire Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Does anyone know if we can use this for older games like Mario Kart? That's pretty much impossible, unless Nintendo drastically changes the firmware to allow voice chat via Wii's OS.
Tyson Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 That's pretty much impossible, unless Nintendo drastically changes the firmware to allow voice chat via Wii's OS. That'd be fricking awesome if that happened. If they fix up the storage problem I think they could do it, maybe include it in the hard drive. Obviously not going to happen, but it'd be beautiful. Surely they already have part of the framework, you can see you've got a mail in game already.
DazzeL Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 It wouldn't be that difficult for them to introduce some Wii Speak channel so that it ran in the background of all other Wii applications. There are problems with this method like the limited RAM onc the Wii but I think it ould be possible, you are looking at tiny amounts of storage needed for a chat interface. The actual Wii hard drive isn't actually a hard drive either, it's a flash drive. It MIGHT be possible to avoid RAM usage by running straight from the flash drive but I doubt it. A hard drive couldn't help this problem in anyway though really, to run an application directly from a HDD, without RAM caching, is so slow it's just not viable. It would be awesome if they implemented this and then a third party released a decent headset.
Gizmo Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 And since when is the Wii compatible with those things? If it is, it's news to me. It's not a computer where you can install drivers freely. Works for my Xbox and I didn't have to install any drivers.
Ike Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 IOs the Wii speak gonna be bundled with Animal Crossing or is it going to be sold seperataly?
Blue_Ninja0 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I don't think RAM would be a problem. Voice chat is really non demanding on that. But Nintendo won't do it anyway. Concerns about not sufficient bandwidth for voice chat + smooth 4 player of Brawl or 12 player MK would also suffice. Works for my Xbox and I didn't have to install any drivers. It does? Didn't know. But still, I highly doubt Nintendo prepared the Wii to be compatible with USB hubs. Anyone here can test it? Would be nice to know.
Calza Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Surely all Nintendo would have to is update the Wii firmware. Microsoft had to update the 360 for the Guitar Hero 3 guitar and the Scene It! 'Big Button' controller.
Fierce_LiNk Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I personally think wearing a headset makes you look retarded I agree with this completely. If you think headsets make you look cool, you have obviously never worked in a call centre.
Blue_Ninja0 Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 I personally think wearing a headset makes you look retarded If you think headsets make you look cool, you have obviously never worked in a call centre. You are so wrong! Headsets make you look cool and feel like a hardcore gamer. Wii Speak makes you feel like a casual gamer. With that said, I'm all for Wii Speak. It's the correct way to go and more practical.
Emasher Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 It does? Didn't know. But still, I highly doubt Nintendo prepared the Wii to be compatible with USB hubs.Anyone here can test it? Would be nice to know. Yes, Hubs work. They are part of the USB standard.
Blue_Ninja0 Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 Yes, Hubs work. They are part of the USB standard. Oh! So they are part of the standard. I though those thinks needed to be installed on the computers or something. Alright, then we don't have a problem of shortage of USB ports on the Wii since those hubs are really cheap.
