blender Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 this sounds like a killer app. I wonder if they are working round the flash limitations or it is dependent on nintendo updating the wii with flash lite 3 http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg07132.html [quote name="Ian Forrester, Senior Producer Fri, 04 Jan "]2. We are looking to build iplayer for the Wii, iPhone and others by the end of this quarter. But with the device experience in mind iplayer is the video on demand service free to uk residents from the bbc. apparently, we make it what it is through the unique way it is funded. a news scoop for a nintendo site i believe
McPhee Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Could it be a new channel? Or do i not get how the channels thing works?
gaggle64 Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Sounds like it would be a new channel, or a programme downloaded via Wi-Ware. At any rate, fantastic idea. Just watch Top Gear over and over until the next episode.
Cube Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 I'll probably just be another internet version that you'll need the Internet Channel for.
david.dakota Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 i seriously doubt Nintendo would allow any third party to develop a channel for Wii. Also, its very unlikely that Nintendo would agree to a channel which is only available to a certain territory- unless that channel is available to Japan, America or any other territory than Europe... And even then its limited to UK. If Nintendo can release an update for Internet Channel, thats the only feasible way it'll happen.
flameboy Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Would be great if it was a channel...But I can't see that happening likely it will work in the browser...
darkjak Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 I am so sick and tired of this. Do they actually mean United Kingdom, or EUROPE? Anyhow, who wants to watch BBC on their DS? The only good thing they have is Topgear.

I wonder why companies resist keeping compatible with Flash 7 ? Is there a big performance loss i wonder?

The only good thing they have is Topgear. Presumably UK...don't know if the service is rolled out to rest of world. I know you have to live in UK to access radio stations online well football at weekends you do.
darksnowman Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 I am so sick and tired of this.Do they actually mean United Kingdom, or EUROPE? Anyhow, who wants to watch BBC on their DS? The only good thing they have is Topgear. Forget Top Gear and get yourself a bit of Rossy, some QI and good old Have I got News for You and you'll soon forget the meagre Top Gear. As for this iPlayer compatibility, I'd imagine its via the Wii browser but a channel would definitely be an interesting way to go.
Cube Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 If Nintendo can release an update for Internet Channel, thats the only feasible way it'll happen. Or the BBC could make it work in Flash 7, which is the most likely option. The update would be dependant on Adobe more than Nintendo.
blender Posted February 7, 2008 Author Posted February 7, 2008 Or the BBC could make it work in Flash 7, which is the most likely option. The update would be dependant on Adobe more than Nintendo. I understand that Adobe has recently released Flash lite 3.. From what i understand it is an advancement over flash 7 and particularly good for low memory devices. I think its up to opera to incorporate it into the browser and then maybe upto nintendo to fund it. However, maybe as a wiiware release, the consumer could pay. But that wouldnt keep with the bbc's philosphy. Maybe a more general commercial media player will be available from wiiware. (Prehaps something from apple!!)
blender Posted March 7, 2008 Author Posted March 7, 2008 http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2008/03/bbc_iplayer_on_iphone_behind_t.html First up, we can divide portable and gaming devices into those that include a web browser (iPhone, Nintendo Wii, Nokia N95, etc) and those that don't (Apple TV, Xbox, most mobile phones, most home media servers, etc). For devices with browsers, assuming that those browsers are able to access and display the BBC iPlayer website, getting BBC iPlayer working on those devices "merely" [see below] requires us to provide audio and/or video streams in a format that is supported by the media player(s) available on that device we're working on making BBCiPlayer available on many more browser-enabled devices over the coming months: stay tuned for details...
scubahood Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 Just today they released iplayer for iphone and ipod touch
flameboy Posted March 8, 2008 Posted March 8, 2008 so that hopefully means its just around the corner for Wii...
Rowan Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Sorry to bump this old thread but it may seem that a Beta version of Iplayer on Wii should be released today: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7338344.stm
Deathjam Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Would be more satisfied if this was 4oD but this is a start. Gonna go check my wii now. Bugger, need the internet channel ¬_¬ For it was a channel in its own right. Surprising that I am almost willing to pay for the iPlayer itself but not a channel that can allow you access to the iplayer
darksnowman Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 It would be cool if it was a channel. I think I'll look it up later tonight and maybe even bookmark it. I wonder if I'll find anything good worth watching to test it out... maybe some QI or Have I Got News for You will be on it...
Rowan Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 I tried it a few minutes ago. The picture quality is quite good considering I zoomed in to fill the whole screen. I tested watching Dr Who and it could easily be viewable
Dyson Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Neat stuff. Shame I don't use my Wii for anything other than Brawl.
tapedeck Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 This is awesome. Rather than taping stuff I can now watch it on the wii. I can never be bothered to sit at a monitor so sitting at the telly is easier. It would be nice to have a channel dedicated to this but the setup is nicely done and it's all wii-mote friendly. I found zooming in to full screen to be a bit laggy and pixellated...Happily my TV has a zoom feature. Nice one to the beeb. Now to cancel my TV license lol.

You can only get access to it if you have a TV licence :p But then again I can access it from my PC and I don't have one It's possible they'll put some system up though similar to how Sky Anytime doesn't allow you access unless you own Sky. But yes, this will be quite useful to me next year at uni when I can actually access it online lol, as my laptop is a bit funny with the iplayer and because I have a Mac I can't download with it. Eh I only watch Doc Who on BBC anyway
Helmsly Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 Cool, I was just thinking about this last night and wondering what had happened to bringing the iPlayer to the Wii. I havnt tried it yet though. So does this update the internet channels flash ? Or does thi only effect the iplayer?
Ashley Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 So is it only for TV license holders? As I need to cancel mine soon and there will be no point downloading it if thats the case.
