Hero-of-Time Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Just incase nobody checks the front page, yes im guilty I seen this on the staff board, here is an interesting rumour. Sources say that the Wii version of Mario Kart - which is said to be revealed at E3 - will be out this year in Europe... One of our trusted sources has given us some news about the Wii version of Mario Kart. The game will be shown at this year's E3, which is something that everything expects anyway. What's more is that it will be release this year in Europe. Specific details on the game are still unknown - just the planned release date and the fact that it exists is known - but we will find all that out next week anyway. Mario Kart for the Wii will be a "replacement" for Super Smash Bros. Brawl in Europe, which will sadly miss Europe this year, and it will be out early 2008 instead. However, this also means that the US will not see Mario Kart until early 2008, and they will be getting Smash Bros. Brawl in 2007. This means that Nintendo fans in both Europe and the US will have something to moan about (they'll have something to be glad about, too....but there will probably be more moaning). Also note that at the beginning of the month Patrick Nagel, Deputy Marketing Manager for Nintendo Germany, stated that Europe will see Metroid Prime 3 and Mario Kart in 2007. We have reason to believe that he really was speaking the truth then. As we have already said, we trust this source, but have put this up as rumour rather than news because we have no way to back it up. You'll just have to wait and see. If this turns out to be true then I will be royally peed off as IMO Smash Bros is a far superior series. Dont get me wrong I love Mario Kart but I have been craving a new Smash game for AGES! Mario Kart would no doubt be funny as hell online if they decide to give us a freaking headset but it still wouldnt match the hilarious matches that Smash Bros games give. So given the choice which of the games would you want first? Smash Bros or Mario Kart?
Goron_3 Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Smash is by far a better series. The only good mario karts have been the DS version and the snes version; the other 2 were FAR too luck based (and the DS version was aswell to some extent). I'm fine with Mario Kart; it's great fun, but I want something challenging that I can play for a laugh but also competitively. There's something about getting hit by a blue shell on the finish line which just pisses me off....
McMad Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Mario Kart, hands down. I think I'm probably the only person on this forum that's slightly happy and not that upset about this news. But if Mario Kart isn't online there will be hell to pay.
Gaijin von Snikbah Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 If Mario Kart is not online there will be trouble. Ive always preferred Mario Kart to Smash Bros, but it depends what the final game is like.
Tellyn Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 I'd obviously want Smash Bros first, but I wouldn't mind getting it a bit later if MK has online and a headset.
Retro_Link Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Without question I would prefer Smash Bros in 2007! Mario Kart is abit of an overrated series IMO (single player anyways!)
Hero-of-Time Posted July 8, 2007 Author Posted July 8, 2007 If Mario Kart is not online there will be trouble. If it aint online there are going to be ALOT of angry Nintendo fans.
Fierce_LiNk Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 As a franchise, I think Mario Kart is more important to Nintendo than Smash Bros is. Especially as how Mario Kart DS was a leading flagship title for the WiFi Connection. I'll be seriously surprised if it isn't online. I think it's a nigh on certainty that it'll be online, but you never know with Nintendo.
McMad Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Mario Kart is abit of an overrated series IMO (single player anyways!) There's single player in Mario Kart? And Flink I think you're wrong, Smash Bros was the GC's bestselling title, Nintendo probably value that franchise more than any other.
welsh_gamer Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Well we did get Strikers before everyone else, so it could happen. Personally I would prefer Smash Brothers first, as I am more hyped for that, and the single player would defintley be better than Mario Kart's, but I won't complain if we get Kart for Christmas, aslong as it has an option for classic controls and motion, and is not a rushed title. It will defintley be online, as the DS version is a success in that area (still getting thousands of connections this week for a 1 and a half year old game), but I do not understand all the fuss for voice chat in a racing game!
conzer16 Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Do a poll!! I was gonna post this exact thread actually. I would rather Mario Kart. I much prefer Mario Kart as a series and for playability, but I will admit I haven't played an awful lot of Smash. Given the choice between the 2 games, I would definitely go for Mario Kart. And yes if it doesn't have online I will be angry

And Flink I think you're wrong, Smash Bros was the GC's bestselling title, Nintendo probably value that franchise more than any other. Melee did sell immensly, but then so did Mario Kart on the DS. It's a long running franchise of theirs, and it's appeared on multiple Nintendo systems and handhelds. So far, there have only been 2 Smash Bros games, right? So, it's still relatively a young franchise.

And racing games have a more universal appeal than fighting games I think.
Mike Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 I'd certainly prefer Smash Bros, but as long as Mario Kart is more like the DS version and less like Double Dash, I suppose I could put up with this.

If you're going to compare something at least make it fair the DS is the best selling console in the world at the moment while the Gamcube struggled all its life, I think to compare Melee to Double Dash would be more fair, then it's clear then what the more popular franchise is. If Nintendo were to put a 2D one on the DS similar to Jump Superstars it would probably be the best selling DS game ever. But I think Mario Kart is one of those games that appeals to some of the Hardcore Nintendo and the casuals while every Hardcore Nintendo fan loves Smash. If that weren't the case then Nintendo would have been teasing us with Mario Kart in that secret screening last year and not Smash Bros.

AshMat Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Mario Kart, hands down. I think I'm probably the only person on this forum that's slightly happy and not that upset about this news. But if Mario Kart isn't online there will be hell to pay. I totally agree, i've enver played Smash Bros, therefore i'm obviously gonna think Kart is better as i don't have smash bros. I'd give MK the same controls as Exite Truck, ir eckon they really work, but cut out the snaking from DS.
McMad Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 But then if the Gamecube struggled all of it's life, surely we should also compare sales of both N64 versions, as well? (mario kart 64 vs Smash bros)? Okay lets do that: Nintendo 64: Mario Kart: 8.47 Million Sales Smash Bros: 4.89 Million Sales Gamecube: Smash Bros: 6 Million Sales Mario Kart: 3.5 Million Sales And while we're at it: Mario Kart DS: 4.56 Million Sales, interestingly I found when researching this that this game sold better in Europe than in the US, that may be the reason behind putting Mario Kart in Europe first as compensation. (wikipedia ftw)
conzer16 Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 The more timed exclusives Europe has over the States the better. We need more. Mario Kart Wii is gonna be an awesome game!
UK Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Smash Bros. It's an awesome game, and there's no excuse for not releasing it at Christmas. Is this news definite? Still, if MK is online, and features top notch graphics, bigger, better courses and good characters, then i supposed there wouldn't be a very good reason to jump from the top of Canary Whalf. So long as Mk came out alongside Super Mario galaxy, and MP3, then OK.
Goron_3 Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 I totally agree, i've enver played Smash Bros, therefore i'm obviously gonna think Kart is better as i don't have smash bros. I'd give MK the same controls as Exite Truck, ir eckon they really work, but cut out the snaking from DS. Cut out snaking? Then it just becomes luck based like Strikers is. I'd rather have something slightly competitive to compete to play than something luck based. I mean, strikers is a great game and I'm sure MK will be, but come on we need Smash! I think it would make sense we get Mario kart though. The DS version sold more in Europe than it did in America whereas Melee sold more in America than it did Europe (think so anyway). This would all make sense then as Nintendo want to combat Halo 3 as much as they can tbh.
KKOB Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Mario Kart is always a great game, and after the faultless DS game, an online Wii one would be perfection!
Cube Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 I'd much prefer Smash Bros. I've played the GameCube version the most - I preferred Diddy Kong Racing on the N64 and DS much more than Mario Kart 64 and DS; and the same with Konami Krazy Racers and Mario Kart SC. I'd still be interesting to see what they have in store for MKWii.
Mikey Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 If there's snaking in MK, count me out when it comes to online play. Make the boost like in the Snes game.
