conzer16 Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Hello! I was wondering if any of you could point me in the direction of a recording of a Yorkeshire accent I'm doing a play over the summer and although my character doesn't speak with one, the rest of the cast does and they all have varying ideas of how one sounds, all with no success at all really!! Some sound like their regular selves, others like a cross between an Englishman, a German and an African It's specifically a West Riding accent, and I really haven't a clue how to do it. I was hoping some of you on here are from West Yorkeshire or near it and could show me a Youtube link or a recording somewhere of people speaking in such an accent! Mercy buckets to you all!
conzer16 Posted May 30, 2007 Author Posted May 30, 2007 I thought Corrie was Manchester though? Is that in Yorkshire? I think the problem is no-one quite knows exactly what a Yorkeshire accent is.
KKOB Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 yorkshire and manchester accents ARE different, should imagine most people could tell the difference.
weeyellowbloke Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 The wikipedia has some useful info on how to get a Yorkshire accent and even includes some particulars on the West Riding accent. ---->Clicky here<---- Also I'm sure you'll find this site very useful. Has recordings of accents and information on pronounciation

Paj! Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 You kind pf speak higher than usual into the back of your throat. That made no sense lol.
Letty Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Jordan will record you a soundclip of him speaking!! *to msn*
kyletherobot Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 emmerdale is a better bet. or the full monty as someone said before. haaaa. that video is amazing. some of kes was filmed at my school, makes it all the closer to my manly, yorkshire heart.
conzer16 Posted May 30, 2007 Author Posted May 30, 2007 Cheers Jordan & Letty! Jordan, you talk funny!! (tee hee!)
4q2 Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 I suppose it depends on what sort of a Yorkshire accent you are looking for. If you are looking for broad Yorkshire search or watch anything that has words Yorkshire mining town involved. Kes is a damn good example of that accent. In all honesty Yorkshire accents can differ quite a bit. On a different note my g/f is from Leeds and I dunno how she ended up with her accent cos it sounds so fackin sathern.
LukeLee Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 gotta agree, the yorkshire accent varies alot, southern yorks tends to be the strongest. im guess the play will avoid yorkshire words like 'ta'. Instead of saying 'to the' say 't'he' like...'i'm off t'he pub'.
MoogleViper Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 If you want I could record me and my mates. I have a south yorkshire accent (mixed with notts and derbys) but it would give you an idea on how some things are pronounced like t' (to the) etc.
conzer16 Posted June 6, 2007 Author Posted June 6, 2007 Jordan made a recording for me, 2 recordings actually but I could do with a few more indeed. It's a west yorkshire accent I'm after - Leeds etc.
