flameboy Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 well I've had connect24 off for about an hour or 2 now and my wii is still pretty cold. but it did still crash once....but then wouldn't turn on immediatly afterwards...again leading me to believe it is a heat problem....hmmm...so maybe just gonna leave it off for a while, to completely cool down and see what happens.
Pestneb Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 using my Wii as an example, it has gotten at most to 40 degree's, I would perhaps accept 50 degrees as plausible (both celsius). to cause damage to any of the chips I would expect 60-80 degree's would be needed. and if the GPU WAS damaged by heat, I suspect you wouldn't get a slight issue, your Wii probably wouldn't turn on, and if it did, it probably wouldn't display anything. Something MAY be damaged by the heat, but I very much doubt it would be the gpu itself. has anyone got anything official and documented from Nintendo mentioning the GPU and overheating?? and as for a potential cause, launch hardware is often buggy, no? like the xbox burning power cable, or the wrist strap on the controller...

Yep here: Anyway from their report over at their site, wii (sorry) we now know that Nintendo tech-support is "refreshingly nice" and effective. Nintendo called Wiinis back after they called in for help, and they report that according to Nintendo, the glitches are probably due to the Wii's video card overheating and getting damaged. Good thing the Nintendo warranty is 90 days, so they can still get their damaged unit swapped for a new one. from here: http://wii.qj.net/Wii-overheat-causes-video-output-error/pg/49/aid/77236 but also from here: http://blogs.ign.com/Peer-IGN/2007/03/16/49487/ it says: Allegedly, leaving Wii in standby mode (orange light) will mean that the system continues to emit heat which could potentially overheat and damage the graphics processor. Given that we have two Wii consoles next to each other in the office that see about the same amount of play -- and one has the problem and the other doesn't -- it's pointing more towards a susceptibility in certain units. The verdict is still out as these issues either aren't that widespread or they're subtle enough to not annoy some folks out there. So it could just be a certain amount of machines that have this fault?
amkrisis Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 let's hope that it's a limited run of machines that have this. but my guess is that nintendo isn't going to tell which one, since calling them all back wouldn't be nice publicity. Anyway, i'm not going to risk to find out my wii is one for the 'gifted' ones It's going to stay nice and cool when it's off
conzer16 Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 did you leave standby internet on or off?just trying to see if the 'myth' of standbye internet overheat is true or not My Wii has had WiiConnect24 on every day since December 8th and nothing has happened to it. It's always a little warm when I switch it on to play games but there has been no problem with gameplay, or the Wii itself.
flameboy Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 well my wii has now crashed about 4 times in the last hour! and is refusing to turn on, I think it is safe to say it was another problem and one that has reached its climax today...pissed off...guess I'll have to send it off.... EDIT: well its turned on now, odd. amkrisis iv added your wii number

flameboy Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 well iv got it running now, gonna watch some tv on alluc.org and see how it goes... when you send them back, how long do they have them for? I guess it's too much to expect that they pick them up by courier and that we have to post it

flameboy Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 hahah yeah for the most part they do all run on the wii, some might not as they use the latest flash, and the wii browser doesn't at the moment. I'm watching Peep Show at the moment, so 30 mins in and my wii is still functioning.

Jonwah Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 My wii isn't great at streaming videos, it has to buffer constantly. I'm guessing that's normal though. Bit of a shame, my computers can stream it all almost instantly.

Bit of a shame, my computers can stream it all almost instantly. My ISP is really crappy, yet my Wii buffers YouTube and the likes like a breeze. It's not the Wii that causes that anyway.
flameboy Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 well my wii has had wiiconnect24 off for two days, and it seems to be okish, I did post before it wouldn't turn on, but now it seems ok, I did ring Nintendo (codestorm) bloke I got was really helpful told me to take out disc and SD card, turn off the at mains, turn back on and leave the wii running till it crashed, told me to go in mii channel, seem as it has crashed on allsorts... I ended up leaving him and left my mii channel running for two hours and didn't crash...
The fish Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Anyone got any idea when the official LAN adapter is out here?
bencallis Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 After reading this I went to check my Wii to see how ht it was and what the fuss was all about. I felt it And fort it was quite warm but didn't see much of an issue. I noticed the light was reflecting of it funny so took it of its stand to further investigate. Turns out it’s bevelled out wards and you can in fact push it in. I'm not sure if it was like this and just a coincident but it quite worrying if the heat is in causing the plastic to bevel. It has been on Wii connect since launch day.
Blue_Ninja0 Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 Some of you guys are opting to turn off WiiConnect 24 because it can burn your Wii? It seems you're missing the point that you paid FULL price for the system and it is supposed to work 100% during the first 2 years of warranty. You don't have to abdicate of any of it's functions as useless as they can be, nor do you have to go buy some 3rd party cooling devices for Wii. Now, Nintendo HAS to give you a fully functional unit. You paid full price for it. My Wii has the overheat problem. I've send it for Nintendo and will send it as many times as needed until i get a proper working unit. I'm not sticking with anything defective.

It seems you're missing the point that you paid FULL price for the system and it is supposed to work 100% during the first 2 years of warranty. So? Perhaps some people prefer to turn of a feature which is currently rather useless, than bother with any possible hassle of replacing the system.
Fierce_LiNk Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 So? Perhaps some people prefer to turn of a feature which is currently rather useless, than bother with any possible hassle of replacing the system. But say the feature does become useful, what then? If there's a serious fault with the system, you may as well get it sorted early on if you can. Then again, it depends on what you would class as serious. I don't keep my Wii connected 24/7, as that would mean keeping both my Wii and my wireless router on all the time. I'm a student, and I have to watch the pennies. However, when I'm at home and I use my laptop/internet, I keep the Wii connected to the internet. So, sorta like signing into to hotmail to check messages, I leave my Wii connected incase I get messages that way, if that makes sense. I don't need to know straight away that I have a message.

I hate the way they make it appear necessary by forcing it to be on for weather and news...I mean it could just download the data as required upon connection.

(in the US they send a shipping label to cover the postage) and send it back by courier I'm not really sure what is up with mine...wouldn't turn on this morning well it would but the screen was just black, and wouldn't turn off, so it is obviously the console...took all the leads out gave them a blow and now it seems ok, very very odd... but yesterday had it running for hours and it did crash once when I went to the disc start up screen, pressed start to loud up wario ware and it crashed with the buzzing noise I have spoken of before. Might give them a ring again...
Dimmuxx Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 did you leave standby internet on or off?just trying to see if the 'myth' of standbye internet overheat is true or not I had it on but the Wii should be able to handle it so it's better to have it on since it will show if your Wii is faulty faster than if you don't and that's good since the warranty is limited.
sim1987 Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Has anybody here got that fan stand? If so is it any good? I'm planning on getting it coz I want wii connect 24 on but have just read the whole graphic over heating thing.
GMC Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 My wii always got quite hot when in standby in wiiconnect24. after reading about the case getting slightly distorted because of the heat, i checked my launch-day wii on thursday and... it was bubbled out. Sent it back to nintendo on friday (along with the cracked-hinge launch week DS Lite that i could never be bothered returning). Currently bereft of video gaming entertainment. That'll teach me for being an early adopter! I'll post again when i find out whats the score with the wii
Rummy Posted June 25, 2007 Author Posted June 25, 2007 Yes, I still get very worried about how warm my wii is, especially considering it's supposed to be such low power consumption, what's making it so hot? sim1987, what is this fan stand you're talking about?
