Zechs Merquise Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 I picked this up the other day, what can I say, a real missed opportunity. I played the first level and thought WOW, this is the best thing since sliced bread, but oh how things slip from there. It's not that I dislike the on foot levels, I found the controls (when set as dual analogue) to be great. The graphics are sharp and clear as well as bursting with colour. The pace is frantic too. However compared to that first level, which is the business, it#'s just not as good. The on rails flying levels are superb and bring back memories of how great Lylat Wars was, and unfortunately the on-foot sections just don;t live up to the on-rails sections. Damn, I wish they'd re-make Lylat Wars with all new graphics and extras, but they won;t, I'll just look forward to it on the VC.
darksnowman Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 I agree with you Zech. That first level was a corker and really set the game off on the right foot, though its sad that the whole thing goes downhill from there. I got this when it came out (or maybe the weekend after) but Ive not completed it, Im at the last level. Its one of them games that as a fan, I was wanting it to pick back up to the quality of the first level, but in reality it never managed to
bart_k Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 I'm not a big fan of the star fox series especially star fox adventures was rubbish. The only real good one was the first star fox (aka Star wing). After that it went downhill. At least that's what I think.
Konfucius Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 I really enjoyed Starfox 64 aka LylatWars. The on-rails was great, the bosses were cool the pace and controls were fluid and the communication was funny. I missed most of that in Assault, I think the flying sections were a bit too fast actually. They should especially bring back the on rails thing.
Calibur Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 I agree, Starfox 64 was golden. Tons of fun to play. I really liked Adventures too, it broke away from the traditional Starfox games and tried something new. Though I never got to try out Assault I haven't heard great things about it. :/ Starfox really needs a great game to turn the series back in the right direction.
ThePigMarcher Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 I really only enjoyed half of this game , and that was the flying levels. The on-foot levels were not too bad but it just didn't feel right. Luckily , I got it free with the stars catalogue so I can't bitch too much. We definately need a proper sequel to Lylat Wars , that game was awesome.
blender Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 the last level of assualt is brilliant. Reminds me of Ikaruga in 3D. Wish the whole game was like that
Zechs Merquise Posted December 13, 2006 Author Posted December 13, 2006 the last level of assualt is brilliant. Reminds me of Ikaruga in 3D. Wish the whole game was like that I'm on level 9 at the mo, I kinda lost interest at that point. At the mo I'm playing through this and Fire Emblem, believe me, Fire Emblem is winning the war for console time lol
solitanze Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Still haven't got this game. Gonna get it eventually to add to my collection of 100% GameCube exclusive games.
Mr_Master_X2 Posted December 16, 2006 Posted December 16, 2006 Wanted this game, but I waited too long. Now, due to it's rarity (thus high price) I'll probably never get it. Sigh...
Zechs Merquise Posted December 16, 2006 Author Posted December 16, 2006 Wanted this game, but I waited too long. Now, due to it's rarity (thus high price) I'll probably never get it. Sigh... Well, I nearly missed it, and I wanted it because I loved Lylat Wars so very much. It's not that it's bad, it just doesn't reach the heady heights you know it could!
Kurtle Squad Posted December 16, 2006 Posted December 16, 2006 I think they need to mix a bit of Rogue Squadren into Starfox to be honest, though obviously not too much
Darth Wengle Posted December 16, 2006 Posted December 16, 2006 I felt that this was extremely underated. It was actually and interesting enough story and the missions in the game were very engaging and enjoyable, with very few exceptions. Its a real shame that they had so few missions, cause what they made was great. Particularly in the on-rails arwing sections, and the levels where you would carry out objectives whilst defending 2 of your teammates at essential points of the level. But the Multi-player was amazing. Like a Gamecube equvilant of Halo, but much much simpler. 4 players on the outpost map is so much fun, with the perfect balance of indoors, airspace, sniping, tactics and tanks. My mates and I would go round eachothers houses just to play that. Star Fox was far too short, but so much replay value and so much fun. 90%

I did like the landmaster and certainly don;t think it controlled badly as others did. But it wasn't Halo!
darksnowman Posted December 18, 2006 Posted December 18, 2006 Even still, its cool to see someone got plenty of enjoyment from this game! I tried out multiplayer a few times and didnt really get into it - we were back onto F-Zero GX in no time
nekunando Posted December 18, 2006 Posted December 18, 2006 Although it's nothing on Lylat Wars, I did find it pretty enjoyable.. even the on-foot sections There's something about trying to get those silver badges that kept me going back to the levels, regardless of the scenario.. but unfortunately, I have never had the chance to play multiplayer before.. hmph.. may play the game again soon actually
Zechs Merquise Posted December 19, 2006 Author Posted December 19, 2006 I reckon this is an example of a game that Nintendo needs to keep in house, Namco just didn't do it justice. I can see why Nintendo began farming out franchises to other developers, but I'd have much rather seen this as the polished product it would have been if it was completed in house.
darksnowman Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 Its suprising though that Namco didnt manage to make a 95% game out of it though, wouldnt you say? Its not like they farmed it out to an unknown, up and coming software house. I think they should reign it back in though, make an outstanding Starfox game, put it back on the map, then take it from there.

Look at the first level, the 5th level and the last level. Those classic on rail levels were mint. They ruined it deviating from the classic gameplay. Sometimes a game gets something so right you never want it to change tack, simply polish itself up whilst serving what can only be described as more of the same.
nekunando Posted December 19, 2006 Posted December 19, 2006 I wonder how a Starfox game could work with the Wii.. maybe using the Nunchuck analogue to direct your arwing, tilt left and right on it to tilt the arwing (quick twist to do a barrel roll) using the Wiimote to aim shooting/bombs.. ..something like that anyway, and have it like Lylat Wars only bigger and better ..everyone's happy..
Strange Cookie Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 I picked this up really cheap a couple of days ago (Yes, I'm in a retro-mood), and I'm rather impressed. I played the demo a long time ago, and was suitably impressed with the flying sections (bar the voive-acting), but really disliked the on-foot-sections. But little did I know there was a dual-stick-mode, and what difference does it make! Far from perfect (too sensitive), but it's so much more enjoyable now. Yay! maybe using the Nunchuck analogue to direct your arwing, tilt left and right on it to tilt the arwing (quick twist to do a barrel roll) using the Wiimote to aim shooting/bombs... Oh, don't you tease me! That could work very well. Control the Arwing with Nunchuk, aiming and shooting by pointing with the Wii-remote. Fingers crossed for a return to the Starfox 64-days!
motion Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Assault was awesome and very under-rated I feel.
david.dakota Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Assault was awesome and very under-rated I feel. Under-rated? I've rented this, and to my horror Namco have completely fucked up. The VO is appalling and they've opted for the worst possible control schemes. They've teased me with some pretty good flying sections in the opening minutes- albiet slow flying sections- but now refuse to let me go anywhere near an Arwing, having me instead aimlessly wonder various complexes shooting targets. Appalling work Namco.
Mike Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 I quite enjoyed Assault, too, but then I've not played Starwing or Lylat Wars, so I don't have anything to compare it to. The on foot missions really didn't bother me, and I had some great fun with the multiplayer.
mcj metroid Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 you see this is one of those that had so many great ideas but some were executed badly.. I hate nintendo fans or crying for the "back to roots" call when one bad game gets released.. Assault felt like a gamecube warhawk to be honest.. I lovd the direction but better execution was needed.. It was a little too ambitious. I didnt like starfox on ds AT ALL
