  1. ok first of all i wana quote all of this from nintendo uk, and it answers the question of what promise they were keeping: ----- "23rd August 2006 - Challenging conventions, redefining the industry, leading the way with change and disruption - at last year’s Games Convention Nintendo made a bold statement that it would expand the definition of gaming. Following today’s conference it is evident that Nintendo is delivering on its promises. With over 5 million DS owners across Europe, females making up 44% of all Nintendo DS owners in Germany and the huge success of the Touch! Generations range, Nintendo is clearly appealing to traditional gamers and non gamers. In the coming year Nintendo will continue to expand the gaming industry with the launch of the highly innovative Wii. This year’s Games Convention saw the global premier of two brand-new 1st Party Wii titles, Mario Strikers Charged (tentative name) and Battalion Wars II. German football ace Philipp Lahm gave the audience a treat when his video message introduced Mario Strikers Charged, the all-new and improved version of Mario Smash Football. Nintendo also unveiled the new Battalion Wars II game for Wii and gave a demonstration of Wii showing how the innovative control mechanism allows people of all ages and experience levels to play together. German quiz show host Joerg Pilawa gave a testimonial about the huge success of the Touch! Generations software and how the Nintendo DS has challenged convention since its launch. The perfect platform for the Touch! Generations titles, the Nintendo DS, which was developed to enlarge and diversify the gaming market has enabled people to play in ways never before imaginable. Most recently, European consumers have gone mad for Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain?, with over 500,000 copies being snapped up in just nine weeks from the game’s launch in June. From Nintendogs puppies - which have sold more than 600,000 copies in Germany and over 3 million across Europe - to the second world of Animal Crossing: Wild World - which has sold over 600,000 copies across Europe - the amazing software results have created a dramatic shift in the way that both game makers and the public think of video games. Not only has the software flown off the shelves but sales of Nintendo DS are also going from strength to strength, further fuelled by the successful launch of the Nintendo DS Lite - the lighter, brighter redesign of the Nintendo DS which launched in Europe in June. In Europe sales of Nintendo DS are now well over 5 million and globally over 21 million have been sold. The popularity of the console is set to continue as Nintendo announces the launch of Nintendo DS Lite Pink on 27th October, the perfect accessory for those dark winter days. With new ways to play and new categories of software, the success of Nintendo DS is setting the stage for Wii. Allowing players to ‘feel’ games in a way never known before, the Wii is set to redefine the standards of the industry even further. With more announcements about Wii to follow, consumers, no matter what their age or ability, can look forward to experiencing a whole new way of playing this year." ----- so there you go, the promise was the one made to the same conference last year. (that rss feed has paid off rather quickly!) second-of-all, i'm with fierce-link here, and i was one of the ones who sat up ALL night and now has bigger bags under my eyes than Taggart ever did!! i allowed the internet hype to get to me, to believe that something huge was gonna be released today! and it was! two new Wii games, and both online! however, at the time that wasn't enough, because i was expecting the motherload, the megaton, the megatron, the optimus prime!! but in hindsight, we shouldn't have allowed ourselves to get so worked up! we knew all about ninty's exclusive conference in two weeks with reggie, that should've been enough. but also add the fact that ninty themselves weren't hyping the event, only the fans were. also, the GDC is a developer's conference, and is rather low-key. everything (i can't remember my other points i'm too tired, help me out here fierce) pointed to what happened today. if we hadn't have let ourselves get each other hyped up (not just this forum obviously, but all of us rabid fans the world over) then right now we'd be amazed at the two games coming out and the fact they're online. too many people have shouted out now that nintendo are idiots, that they've let themselves down, that they're pricks one person said!! they know what they're doing, the secrets and the hype machine has worked great so far, and with sony just about willing to steal anything no wonder they're keeping things close to their chests. and for goodness sake, it's only two weeks away, STILL in the same time window we knew all along - september!! now i'm away to lie down...
  2. they're not hurting themselves by waiting all of TWO weeks! besides, look at that invitation! we shoulda known b4 this this morning that it wouldn't be the motherload. i mean, that invitation is for an exclusively nintendo event, not a shared one like this conference. the one in two weeks is also hosted by Reggie!! unlike the one today was gonna be... i allowed myself to get hyped and stayed up, and in hindsight... well, i'm a prick lol! i shoulda known the next one is it!
  3. you're right. my initial reaction was severe disappointment, but then i remembered that ninty never said they WOULD release such info! it started on the net and got outta hand (like the leon kennedy shadow in ONM thing all over again), that's hardly ninty's fault! hey! just because we all got hyped up about what MIGHT have been in the show doesn't mean they're twats for not doing it! and it wasn't their only chance for crying out loud, there's their OWN conference in two weeks, one that they are putting on by themselves. in hindsight, that'll make for a much better time!
  4. obviously the american conference in a coupla weeks is the one then. but yeh compared to what we thought that sucked. but really, it could be the fault of a lot of hype on the net and not necessarily nintendo's fault. though i fail to see what promise they proved.
  5. got a funny feeling that was just proving the promise to those people that had heard very little about it, and the five new games included those ds ones. maybe an example of the original news of this conference being blown outta proportion on the net and getting all our hopes up...?
  6. this from ign: 1:15 a.m.: Crowds are gathering for the beginning of the Wii Prove Our Promise conference 1:30 a.m.: The show is beginning 1:31 a.m.: Speaker takes stage and promises "surprise" announcements 1:32 a.m.: Goes over Nintendo's plan to capture non-gamers 1:35 a.m.: Says Nintendo is going to explore new areas of game development 1:37 a.m.: Continues on about pulling in new gamers; points to DS as example i like the "surprise announcements" bit
  7. meant to start at 9:15. eurogamer have changed their timetable too. just some rubbish music at the mo... well, the german singer was good, this stuff is crap tho.
  8. excellent!! (and a surprisingly good german song at the mo!) hope this is the right one! thanks hero of time... truly living up to ur name!
  9. i'm being told 9:15 by some people, and then because of daylight saving hours i'm being told 10:15 by others. can anyone confirm 100%? according to one site: Eurogamer will be providing live text commentary of the three platform holder press conferences at this year's Leipzig Games Convention on Wednesday, August 23rd. While the following are subject to change, these are the timings we've been given for the conferences, which you'll want to keep in mind: Nintendo - 10.15 BST / 11.15 CET Microsoft - 11.30 BST / 12.30 CET Sony - 16.00 BST / 17.00 CET BST - british summer time.......... so you think its quarter past ten then??
  10. an hour and a quarter, remember its 10:15 not 9:15 apparently
  11. really? you got the full speech? do share
  12. well here's another quote, this time from news4gamers.com: ----- "Calling for combat to become 'dramatic, varied and innovative' Molynuex said that gaming could learn a lot from movies and went on to show some scenes from Kill Bill, where Uma Thurman slaughters the 88's in a welter of spectacular one-shot violence. Molyneux said he believed one sword blow should be enough to kill in a game and he thought that if designers adopted a 'one-hit one-kill' system it would intensify the combat and the drama to unprecedented heights. Molyneux also pondered the fact that he reckoned 80 per cent of gamers only ever really used one button at a time, suggesting that new developments in game context sensitivity would mean that a single button press could be assigned to many actions. Molyneux also went on to possibly commit gaming swordfighting heresy by asking 'do we need a block button anyway?' although he admitted that wasn't a very popular view amongst his Lionhead colleagues. Elsewhere in a highly amusing speech, Molyneux took time out to give himself a gentle poke in the ribs over the original Fable, desribing it as a 'bit repetitive' and also admitted that he didn't have the energy or indeed inclanation to wave around a Wii controller for hours on end." ----- so how does this "great visionary" see the future of gaming? a one-button control pad and one-hit kills? wow, innovative... :S really sounds like he's trying to hype up the old way of playing games.... the REALLY old way! all that microsoft money musta gone to his head! (although he's sounding more like a sony employee right now!!)
  13. u'd pay more on shipping than u would buying one here. and why buy two foreign versions and not ur local one??? besides, they'll be released within weeks of each other and won't be region free anyway.
  14. read this little snippet from cubed3: "As Game Convention dawns, game designer Peter Molyneux has given his two cents on the upcoming motion-sensing control schemes (Wii / PS3) in his “Combat in Games†speech in Leipzig, with a change in his views on being more physically in control with games. According to gaming website 1up, Molyneux was initially positive about the prospect of integrating motion-sensing into new and existing games, but is now not so sure. He said, "I realized, when I looked at myself in the mirror, I actually looked really stupid. Even with nothing in my hand, I get tired very, very quickly." "I think motion-sensitivity is very, very useful, but I think the obvious way of doing it -unless you're dealing with a 15 to 20 minute experience at most of actually being hugely physical - is not where the opportunity lies here." He suggests that the innovation provided by motion sensing should go beyond replicating movement on screen, like sword-swinging, to be able to break new ground in the industry. Stick with C3 for future updates." now, is it just me, or has he changed his tune since he made that exclusivity deal with microsoft...?
  15. starsky & hutch mission impossible wild wild west the dukes of hazzard all big screen remakes of classic shows, that did away with a lot of what made the originals a hit and changed them to "suit" a newer audience don't they look at the fact that these shows still command good ratings today and sell well on dvd? that must mean >>shock-horror!!<< people today actually LIKE the way the originals were done! i abandoned all hope for the new knight rider movie, but i've heard glen larson, the show's original creator is on board, and unlike starsky's creator he isn't gonna sell out. he's keeping the movie the same as he envisioned the show, and making it a little grittier just like the original pilot movie. "somewhere between knight rider and sin city" he says. i have faith but then we have battlestar galactica, a massive remake, completely changing the show but making it 500% better! it's the show larson wanted to make but couldn't at the time (and i think is influencing his decision to redo kr). absolutely fantastic, cutting edge television that respects the original so much! i also much preferred the remake of the grudge, it was handled by the original's director etc etc so it didn't stray, just broadened the film's appeal. but then how about george lucas and his constant stupid milking of star wars? or universal and their pointless shot-for-shot-except-let's-put-in-some-fast-moving-clouds-during-the-shower-scene remake of psycho? my point? i'm not entirely sure, except that whether a remake is good or bad is maybe down to each individual one, and who is in command of it.
  16. Watched The Spy Who Loved Me tonight, one of my fave Bond movies. Can't beat it 10/10 Just to rhyme them off while I'm here... Do No 9/10 From Russia With Love 10/10 Goldfinger 10/10 Thunderball 8/10 You Only Live Twice 7/10 On Her Majesty's Secret Service 10/10 Diamonds Are Forever 5/10 Live & Let Die 6/10 The Man With The Golden Gun 6/10 The Spy Who Loved Me 10/10 Moonraker 7/10 For Your Eyes Only 10/10 Octopussy {titter} 10/10 A View To A Kill 9/10 Living Daylights 10/10 Licence To Kill (my fave) 10/10 Goldeneye 9/10 Tomorrow Never Dies 8/10 The World Is Not Enough 10/10 Die Another Day 2/10 lookin' forward to Casino Royale too
  17. munky's show, futurama, is coming back due to fan pressure, so you never know. i loved it when it first started and watched it religiously (it's actually what got me involved in one of my fave interests - ancient egypt) but then missed a handful of episodes and decided to (eventually) start collecting it. went thru series one and two on vhs before starting to collect the whole heap on dvd. only up to series five now, this past year i've been collecting knight rider, a-team, airwolf etc but really wana get back to sg1. didn't i read that the ratings were still climbing after ben browder came in as a regular cast member? it's still one of the top three rated shows on scifi US along with galactica (awesome!) and atlantis... last i read anyway!
  18. yeh it is, but as the bard pointed out it's richard dean anderson (o'neill), he was also the star of macguyver back in the 80's and early 90's.
  19. which conference is this? sorry if it's been mentioned, i musta missed it. hopefully we'll get release date tomorrow, just thinking about magazine deadlines etc that they'll have to give the info out in good enough time... anyone know how much in advance the gamecube's release and details were announced?
  20. i know we have some fellow stargate fans here, so check this one out lol! http://www.thatvideosite.com/view/1569.html
  21. it won't be under £100, too close to the DS and that'll give out the wrong impression about Wii. i expected around £150, very willing to pay £175 with a game and an extra controller. "nothing to justify a higher tag that £120"?! Wii looks like it's gonna cost me a fortune as there's actually very little that i DON'T want
  22. not a lot of mainstream coverage?! i saw Wii everywhere, from gaming magazines, to tabloids, to the broadsheets, to the BBC News At Ten!! and we're a bit of-topic of zelda are we not...? lol {{hops over to the conference thread}}
  23. yeh, it introduces mario and luigi to the mushroom kingdom, starting off in brooklyn and seeing daisy get kidnapped. i know the goombas are huge, i know the fact that the mushroom kingdom is in a parallel universe where it was dinosaurs, not mammals, that evolved into "people"-ish, but i really enjoyed it. yes toad is a person, as is koopa, iggy and spike, but they are meant to have evolved into these from the dinosair etc creatures in the games, so they all have weird quirks and ticks about them that are reptilian. there's tons of nintendo mario universe in-jokes for fans too. like the big yellow taxis have "wiggler taxi" signs on them, there's what looks like a dinner called "bulet bill's" etc etc the list is endless. it is quite dark and the kingdom is gritty, but that is only apparently because of koopa's reign, he's dried the kingdom up of its resources and it is no longer that which we know of in the games. the fungus is everywhere, and it even helps our heroes a few times, and you get the impression that the mushroom kingdom IS like the games underneath, away from the horrible city that koopa has had built. shame a sequel couldn't have explored that. i like it, it is very funny (the lift scene is hilarious!) and bob hoskins and john leguizamo are brilliant as our plumbers. 8/10 - if you can stomach a different take on the mushroom kingdom (which IS explained in a way, and the ending leaves it maybe being restored to the one we know and love) this is very enjoyable, and genuinely funny! when i saw the SMB movie the first time i was the same, i didn't know if it was faithful, and i loved it. was curious to see if i'd like it as much now that i know a lot more about the games and have become a huge fan of them they can both be enjoyed by fans i feel. well, me personally at any rate.
  24. why even bother making a thundercats cartoon when uv no intention of doing anything remotely to do with the original show?? why not just create a new show? the only thing this has to do with the original is the name, and it sounds like this is just using the name to pull in the original's fans... but none will be impressed!! so i ask again, why go to all the hassle of aquiring the old rights etc etc etc if u have every intention of making something completely different?!
  25. but will they admit their failings? or that the cells IN the concoles could go down at any time? of course not! and i know i posted this as the last line in the GDC thread but think it is suitable here too for anyone not in that one: imagine the scene, sony HQ.... "no, we can't start manufacturing yet!! leave it until after wednesday until we can see what else we can steal from nintendo!!"
