  1. I remember JonSt watched it. I watched all the 'original' series then it was resurrected by another network and the cast altered superficially. I watched most of the first season of that but didn't get to follow it much more. Was something about the show that was endearing to watch.
  2. Is ep 9 always the awesome one each season?
  3. ... I've been stunned all day. yes, work-related. I was pulled aside and told that "in due course" our whole department is expanding and I will be in charge of the new team. Like... man... Basically today all of the hard work I have put into this job (the reason I just don't post much at all anymore, and the reason I don't socialise) have come to fruition. In the next few months I will be earning more money and have MINIONS! I will have leapfrogged 5 other people for the position. If anyone has followed my posts they'll see I thought I was in teh top 4, then top 3, then top 2 for the opportunity that was never necessarily going to happen -- and now it's happening and I'm getting it. So mad. I've worked for the company for about 14 months and this will be my 4th promotion... I just cannot remember the last time I felt this happy! I don't know WHEN it will happen... and I've not told my colleagues and I don't know how that will work... A new game to play. But for now... I'm just SO happy that the work has paid off -- that the company recognises the efforts I've made. If/when I get this paygrade I've basically guaranteed myself a job for life. Madness!
  4. I know we have a job woes/win thread, but at this stage my work is my life! In the last two weeks I've made big 'deals' with banks that will save us thousands of pounds, redesigned the paperwork we send [potential] customers, reworded our T&Cs to work around certain bains, altered our CRM interface so that we can save seconds and minutes doing various tasks. I've had colleagues who have been there years longer than me going "lol no point asking for overtime jayseven! I've been trying for years..." so I asked for overtime and provided some logical reasons as to why it was essential... and bam! Got the OT. Got a few more projects to work on, and I've been doing 4-day weeks (for personal reasons that I'll explode about in another thread in the near future) yet smashing the work in those days. I'm still working the long game. September is when we have pay reviews so I guess I need to start looking at jobs so I can work on an ultimatum or two. Oh and most importantly I've started playing COD (black ops 2) again and I'm kicking ass and being awesome - I'd forgotten the rush!
  5. Hell yes it gets better -- The Drawing Of The Three is a great book (it's the 2nd book in teh series) as it introduces two more characters and blends the 'two worlds', and expands the vision beyond the limited scope of the one-character first book. The third book (The Waste lands) builds on it really well too, showing the importance of each main character. Books 4 and 5 are a bit weak, but mainly because book 4 doesn't conclude well and people expected more -- but 6 and 7 are quicker paced and... well by then you're invested. The Dark Tower series is a great 'easy read' when considered that it was out and written before a lot of modern TV series that have fed off of it. If it was written today it would perhaps be more approachable, but the series is worth sticking with -- and wraps up really well compared to other series!
  6. I saw the humble bundle and I just had to say that To The Moon was one of the best game/tv/movie/book experiences I had in the last 12 months. Worth it.
  7. ^One of the greatest moments in the history of everything.

  9. I've not seen many games from La Liga this year and I was pleasantly surprised by the voracity of the Atletico team. They were able to really snuff out Real's attacking ability for a large proportion of the game. The last 20-30 mins were much more sloppy, but the Atletico defence did a fantastic job at keeping benzema, bale and ronaldo at bay for as long as they did. But as the gas ran out, the real subs started to shine. Real went down the left flank 90% of the time with these fresh legs and it helped to wear Atletico down. Bale's goal was a pure example of Atletico's physical exhaustion, and the two quick following goals were an example of the mental exhaustion. Spain and Germany have domestic teams that are winning with style and with excellence -- and with teams that are practically the national side with a few substitutions. All we need is for Southampton to lift the Premier League next year and we'll be in a position to take over the world! :P
  10. I will play devil's advocate here (despite agreeing that the right thing to do is to move elsewhere), but I would suspect that your previous altercations with management were not executed in a way that left management assured of your ability to middle-manage, plus the fact that you have a secondary job (for circumstances due to the current job not rewarding you enough), which may lead them to think you're looking elsewhere anyway. The fact that you're good at sales is obviously not enough. Great at sales = keep them on sales. Let them initiate and train the newbs, sure, but why take them away from the front line? Obviously I have no real idea about your day-to-day business, but being on the side of management really doesn't mean you have to be a yes man, it just means that you have to present a valid argument when you say no -- and you have to be mindful of how you present it as well. As Moogle said, purely being good at the job is not a guarantee of promotion. Keep with your supervisor program, and keep hassling them about moving on with the next step (segue: When I worked at argos they brought in an initiative to have everyone trained to do each department, and I hated tills, so I managed to luck and connive my way out of each 'training' session. They always forgot and put it on the back-burner because it's less important than... pretty much everything else day-to-day. Then they started a program to get people ready for promotions, but all 9 of us selected were constantly having to chase up the supervisors because it was not the most important part of their own job). But yeah - look elsewhere, and take your success at sales and target performance and consider other fields as well in order to broaden your horizons. Telesales sounds dreadful (it is) but it's a liveable hell for a period of time, pays better than retail, and can lead to better jobs. My shitty two cents.
  11. May be unavoidable I guess, but story-wise I don't think anything is lost in translation. I finished the first season and half-way through the first episode of the 2nd. Doesn't grip me yet.
  12. fantastic game and my favourite thread of the year :P Just wish I was as jobless as I was 18 months ago so I could've tried to get in on it earlier! No illogical answers. A wide range of people were able to crack it, which means you were able to be cryptic in the most democratic way possible. I'm happy I got my 8 points I didn't guess any of the subsequent answers.
  13. It's up for proposal, not certain to enter legislation. It's like testing the goalkeeper's 5-second rule, or trying out the golden goal nonsense. The aim is to even up the odds but in actuality it opens a huge doorway to what would essentially be cheating. Run into a key player and feign an injury... With any hope it will be considered and - if entered - taken seriously. If it happened referees would have the power to decide whether it's a case of "put both guys off" or "the guy is being a dick". I think it's important to think progressively about this because currently players 'injured' are too often left waiting far too long to be called back onto the pitch, and it does currently leave an imbalanced session of play. Also last I heard Sherwood is favourite to take over at brighton. We've made the playoffs two years in a row, and as part of a 5-year plan we're doing really well. Our stadium draws in full capacity most weeks, and the stadium is bigger than a few clubs in the prem so it's shaping up well. But brighton's problems haven't been down to having a BAD manager, just not quite having the squad to compete. If Sherwood can draw more funds then fair enough - if he stuck with us and we got a promotion in a year's time then he'd be a fantastic manager for the first season with the big boys.
  14. Been watching the danish the Killing on netflix. got one ep of the first season left... considered the time (past midnight) and figured that due to how each episode has been so GNNNN AAAAA IIII OMG 19 times so far, it would be foolish to watch the finale without having the time to watch s02e01. Season 2 only seems to have 10 episodes, but there's also an american version of the show to look forwards to. Available on netflix! WAY above par. Police-investigating-a-murder stuff. Your opinion of pretty much ALL the characters will change at least once. Great storywriting. Definitely recommend it.
  15. 5pts Mr Odwin (the underlined 3)? Wish I'd seen this game earlier. Great work sheikah! Love these things. Made me realise I can't remember who's who on these boards anymore though. I haven't accurately followed the thread, just scanned it. Could the 3pt swords be blade? Noideaselsewhere...

    Suits

Damn I thought this was about the TV series! I hate suits. I buy one every 5 years for a formal occasion. Leaves me £100 out of pocket and I just get too fat to wear it again. (sorry no advice -- topman and next both had great staff that measured me and advised me, and if I hadn't been shopping with someone else I wouldn't have taken the measurements and gone somewhere cheaper).
  17. Sory to hear about that Flink. Manliest of hugs, with a little bit of homo if it will help at all.
  18. In my own life I have found that I've been in situations where someone has asked me "how's your day been?" over an after-work pint, and as soon as they finish wording the question they peer to their screens and tap and swipe away. This means one of two things. Either they don't really care about the response, or there is something more pressing and important on their little device. I've been there -- talking to someone then the girlfriend texts me or the landlord or the boss. But I am able to verbally enter my communicante into the contract of life and say "hey sorry I gotta take this" -- so this sort of behaviour is not part of my problem, as anyone with a good sense of manners will not merely assume the other parties know that they NEED to check their phone. Alternatively, as shorty said, they ask the question but don't actually give a crap about the answer (or, to expand on his point - someone is wattling on far too much and, by checking one's phone, one hopes to signal a distinct lack of interest and/or attention in the current 'topic' that the speaker is droling on about), in which case why ask at all? There's a complete smorgasboard of situations that we have all endured and accidentally created thanks to technology. That doesn't mean it's a bad thing -- just that we are still learning the boundaries of social and/or moral acceptable behaviour in relation to it. The moral code of the dining table is practically written in stone - fork in the left hand, elbows off the table, don't burp in people's faces (I hold my fork in the other hand and generally eat off my lap or out of a cardboard box, so we agree it varies) but the point is that technology forces us to change, and the immediate response is that this is a bad thing. It is not. But some people just have an innate inability to be polite or courteous - and even without a phone in their hand I think they'd still find a way to act disinterested in what one is talking about, accidentally or otherwise. Rather than lamenting for the way that things were, why not see the present in a different light. The way everyone behaves today will be the subject of pretty much all of the next generation's jokes - so get ahead of the curve and lol at the moment as it passes. No point fighting technology!
  19. i've skim-read and i'm not replying directly to the nigger or CCP stuff. Politics. I want to make a big argument about the dangers of corruption, the benefit of the free press plus the dangers of the free press... but I can't be bothered. Essentially education is far more important. Rather than electing the smartest, why not raise the average understanding of political matters, so that votes do count? Rather than the media being able to sway the "uneducated" (and uninterested) masses into voting for one-liner policies, why not encourage the idea of greater understanding? Problems are numerous. Some people are just genuinely thick. But there is a real danger in allowing for a patronising uprising of those who believe they know best. Because nobody knows best for all situations. Doing the greatest good for the greatest number of people is a fine idea when there's only one problem, but when every problem every person faces is specific to them and their circumstances, there is no easy answer.
  20. Basically been put in a potentially awkward position; if I draft something and present it to one of the managers on tuesday I can get all the credit for something that I feel is genuinely a 50/50 brainchild of mine and my colleague - a colleague who taught me a lot and is the MODEL member of team. The politics is thus; teammate is good friends with a manager. Manager is also good friends with her deputy manager. Deputy manager and teammate do not get on. Deputy manager likes me. Ultimately I believe that respect should be given where respect is due. I do not feel comfortable treading on toes... and so I have a few days to come up with a solution to satisfy all parties and to not tarnish my own reputation. Sounds simple, but whatever i do has to come across in such a way that it a) does not upset teammate, b) shows I have initiative, c) does not upset deputy manager. It's not straightforward, but it's why I love my job. End of week pub sessions are ALWAYS worth going to. Much mingle.
  21. I have been leaning towards 'comfort' shows, as I cannot watch Game of Thrones. beasted through The Good Wife, then switched to Suits for some more lawyer action (far more pompous), and now back to The Unit -- I don't know why but the theme tune is one of my favourite ones. The show itself is obvious and in many ways dull, but it's like a really good andy McNab or Tom Clancy show where you have a secret unit of soldiers who are like elite boy-scouts.
  22. @Animal I would say that you should be careful. I know that work takes over life and all the small decisions become massive ones when it's something that happens during that third of your life when you're selling yourself. I know nothing about fitting shoes at all. But I used to go to the same shoe shop for years and years and no matter how nice and lovely the staff were, occasionally the shoe would not fit perfectly. It's not an insult. @Fierce_LiNk I'm sorry I can't comprehend your position right now. Just keep trying to help him out. The feeding tube may be a massive scare-point for him. Let him know it's a sign of care and help and not a negative thing... Ultimately I hope you don't feel like you are useless or anything. You are clearly trying to help and that's more than most. Sorry this is a shit post with no help - but you're a strong dude and a family man, so please don't doubt yourself.
  23. fluxx is a great game - i've not played any of the varients yet though. When I bought my fluxx deck from looney labs years ago they put me on a mailing list and occasionally sent me free cards in the post. I should probably update my address. I still don't gel with Ticket to Ride (I have a shitty memory which doesn't mix well with the rules).
  24. Moved house! Lots of perks. Only £100 extra a month for a larger room, more storage space, free access to the lounge, dining room and big kitchen. Loads of fridge/freezer space. Kitchen cupboards a-plenty. 15 min walk from work. Better internet, quieter street, quieter room. I had a "last night here" pizza last night... then had a "first night in the new place" pizza tonight. Same delivery guy. Very confused look on his face. And the obligatory work-is-going-really-well comment goes here.
  25. yes. Stop looking at your keyboard! You will see from teh words in front of you if they are what you want or not (excuse teh). Keyboards all have a little nubbin on the F and J keys. once you can find these with your fingers you can figure out the rest. I actually use four fingers on my left hand and two and a half on my right. Correct touch-typing relies on using specific fingers for specific keys, with the 'home' position being index fingers on F and J and the rest of the fingers lined up next to these. Each finger has one up and one down to lord over, while the middle fingers sgare those in beween. If you can type without looking at the keyboard then you make up for using less fingers.
