No way is this eugenics in this case, it's just sensible. If we can use all these techniques like PAGE to prevent people being born with high probabilities of developing cancer, then I think we should. It's not like we're selecting for desirable traits - just trying to avoid those that are deleterious. Anyway, it's cool they've managed to pull this off.

Best avatar ever. There are still 79228162514264337593543950336 different avatars to select between, even with only jpegs and bmps. Edit: On second thoughts, I'll stick with Haldane for now.

I think he said it as a joke about a year or two ago, when nobody but Flink was anywhere near 10 000.

God knows, a fair chunk of it is in our canteen thing so difficult to calculate. Probably far too much though, although it is the only real thing I spend money on other than books.

Yes, I was going to point to science and mathematics (is the concept of number universal?), but it's a lot less elucidating if they're pretty much another us - a totally different slant on everything would lead to so much more information. And while their literature and so on would be interesting, such things are founded firmly in language and the way the world is experienced, so if you make all these things the same, we wouldn't be learning nearly as much. It does bring up questions of linguistic relativism though (to what extent is thought shaped by language?), but that's another story...

Happy birthdayness, enjoy your alcohol-related activities. (and enjoy the ones that aren't alcohol-related, if there are any)

I'm not so keen on Chinese takeaway these days (but will still readily eat it), but love some of what I've had of "genuine" Chinese food. I've only had such things in Japan and Chinatown, but a friend of mine who's been to China for a couple of months told me it was much like actual Chinese. One thing that's great is char siu bao:

Cool, though wiki tells me James Bond was an American (rather than English) ornithologist, and apparently Flemming got the name from him. Hmm, I vaguely recall something about that. Anyhoo, happy birthday to both of you! (just in time) Edit: Awesome, also Jakob Grimm apparently. He is win.

True, but Cambridge is famous for having lots of green spaces along with an absurd number of pubs - they have an average of 1136 people per pub apparently, not that that means much without comparable statistics from other places. Cambridge would be cool for another mini-meet sometime I think, and London would be better for the big awesome meet of the year. -
Alrighty, done so. Pity I didn't get round to voting... ah well.

So, apparently:

I got Guitar Hero: World Tour, the Oxford Book of Modern Science Writing, Don't Sleep, There are Snakes (book about a crazy language by a linguist who is himself quite possibly crazy), season 7 of Family Guy, a technical book on Chomskyan syntax, some choclatey things. Oh, and a really odd shirt from my grandparents... Some cool things overall, methinks.

This is a pity, I really like some of his stuff. Ah well, 78 isn't young I suppose.

So, are people going to need food? What do people want to eat? -

No, but I suppose we could theoretically make it out of bits and stuff but that might be a bit crap. Hmm... -

Done so. Are you driving then? If so, the station probably isn't the best place to park as it's a bit out of town, but you should be able do so, and everyone else will be walking in so it should be fine. -

Which small toy shop Fish? Anyway, in case we fail to acquire a suitable board game, I can always bring one, although the only good travel version I have of a game is of course go, and I don't imagine many people will want to buy that. Anyway, anyone wanting my number (j7, ReZ, Fish?) let me know and I'll PM it to you. All I need now is a time to get there and/or meet people - I can guide people into town from the station if needs be, but tell me when you'll be getting there so I don't have to wait around for ages. Also, what's the venue? -
Blame the great vowel shift, it's what I do (though imports are probably to blame for the spelling of "manoeuvre"). English is so odd, it uses an alphabet but thanks to a load of historical quirks half the advantages of such a system no longer exist. Oh well, at least our writing system is nowhere near as bad as the Japanese one.

Ye gods, I got up at 9am this morning. That's disturbingly normal, not that I'm complaining or anything. Will be busy in the near future - I've got a dentists appointment today, a wedding to go to tomorrow, a family thing on Sunday, KNEEEE meet Monday, meeting friends the next day, my sister's birthday to celebrate at some point, Christmas on Thursday, and the London go congress between Christmas and New Year. And then I'm back up to Cambridge in early January. Hmm, still have two essays to write and a lot of books to read before then.
