  1. Well, arguably any conclusion you draw is based on informal statistical analysis. :wink: Experiments like that are useful cross-linguistically to see how different languages divide up colour-space. They're usually done by asking people to select coloured chips.
  2. It's not possible to "test" in any literal sense, but it is unequivocally true. The point is that in an infinite sequence of totally random letters, every possible finite sequence of letters will be present.
  3. I fail to see what's so amazing - did you expect way more variation?
  4. Yes, but there are subtle differences, and it'd be interesting to see whether they correlate with anything else, and the different variances of the colour names.
  5. This is a really cool idea, although there's the minor problem that people will have different displays to others. Incidentally, you should be able to get around the fading thing on photoshop by selecting "save for web" rather than "save" and saving with 100% quality. It'd be fun to do statistical analysis on the data resulting from this, which I might do when I have the time (i.e. in a couple of weeks). Anyhoo:

  7. Iyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa will probably suffice. I should point out that for the vast majority of anime, the voice is recorded before the animation, and the animation is made to fit it. In fact, the only show I can think of that definitely didn't do this is Red Garden. While this means that the lip-sync isn't going to be perfect (as with a dub, though a little better), the animation is to some extent moulded by the work of the voice actors themselves. Coupled with the fact that voice acting in Japan is a massive business, and thus likely to be better in quality than something produced elsewhere, the argument for subs seems pretty strong.
  8. Clannad 21: Sad but good, as always. I liked some of the scene transitions towards the end of the episode.
  9. God, I've had that before. It's best to just stick to either French or Japanese, else your brain explodes in the attempt to juggle three languages simultaneously.
  10. Well, as a linguist, I'm not a fan of subs, as I'm of the opinion that no work is so interesting that you can't also have a go at trying to decipher the original language. I also like to see (semblances of) works in their original form, and subs are probably a better approximation of this. Furthermore, once you get used to subs, there's a documented psychological effect that causes you to think you're actually hearing and understanding the foreign language even though you aren't, although it probably helps to be a faster reader. Finally, in the case of Japanese, I'm just about getting to the stage where watching something with subs is more irritating than helpful, although they're definitely still necessary to pick up some of the more complex conversations, whereas dubs would just be useless. Technically no, as you can only focus on a tiny area, but practically yes, as a lot of unconcious saccadic eye movements build up a much larger, more consistently detailed image, which is what you actually see.

  12. Quite probably, but the injection is only 99% efficient or something. Good to know though.
  13. Well I think the lion means "this egg doesn't have salmonella, unless it does and you try to sue us, in which case we never said it had it." Basically, they've been checked over, and probably washed, but there's a tiny chance that there could be salmonella actually inside the egg. If this is the case, you could get ill if the egg isn't cooked through, but you can also kill it by heating the egg at about 42 celcius for a while, which is hot enough to kill the bacteria but not coagulate the egg proteins - good to do if you're poaching eggs or something. And another precaution is to crack the egg on a flat surface rather than on the rim of a cup, as using a rim can force bacteria from the surface into the contents of the egg. The other thing is that bacteria tend to be confined to the white of fresh eggs, so if that's solid you're okay, but in older eggs the yolk membrane degrades a bit so you can find salmonella there too. But salmonella isn't really that bad if you do actually get it - it's like norovirus or something, fever and D&V for a couple of days. I've had it before, albeit mildly, and it wasn't much of a problem - it only is if you're old, infirm, pregnant etc. Anyway, I'll shut up about eggs now, I'm a bit obsessed with culinary science applied to them. Cocoa butter, milk and sugar - they don't add cocoa powder, unlike in normal chocolate. Which means that yes, it doesn't count as chocolate.

  16. You can only get salmonella from stuff that's still "wet" - provided the cake is cooked through, it should be fine.

  18. I can't stand slow walking tourists who block up the entire pavement. We're not all here to sightsee, and I'm being delayed while you leisurely stroll along! It actually amazes me how slowly most people on the street walk.
