  1. Well, the OED has a written use of the term in that sense from 1929. But you're right, the other use of the term is older - it dates back to the 14th century. But I don't see this as being a problem - the term "sexual intercourse" has also changed in meaning over time.
  2. I think you'll find it's more the other way round - science adopted a common word and gave it a specific meaning... this happens a lot.
  3. The genetic definition of sex is really nothing do do with the usual meaning of the word.
  4. Best name for a dog, ever: Nigel. Dave is also good.
  5. My sister had a hamster called Loveheart when she was about 7... I tried to get her to call the next Benvolio, but she wasn't having any of it. I had two stick insects when I was about 6, and looked in the baby name for names... I didn't get past A, so they were called Andrew and Alexandra.
  6. Which is what I said - all pigments absorb reflect and absorb different wavelengths of light... in this case, the pinky/red things are carotenoids.
  7. Had a bit of a Socratean moment this morning - got asked by a guy with a camera what I thought the meaning of life was. I replied "understanding".
  8. If you don't look like Light then the bedrock of my existence will be shattered.
  9. Yeah, I think you can get that sort of thing can happen. Cambridge have also been known to give out EE offers to people they really want - they call these martriculation offers as if you're that good you're pretty much guaranteed to get EE. Christ's are the odd college out here, 1/3 of the offers they give out are EE.
  10. Conditional is where you have conditions to meet, normally exam grades. (the subjects may or may not be specified) Unconditional offers are those where you don't have to achieve anything to get in - these are normally given to people who've already done A-levels (or IB, or whatever else), so they know your grades already.
  11. That's what my sister wants to do, if she ever gets round to applying...
  12. They're softsubs, try playing them in zoomplayer and/or get the combined community codec pack.
  13. Why does that matter? Surely you'll just go to whatever you put down as firm...
  14. It was legally binding when I was going through the process last year, so I'd imagine it remains so. Seeing as we're posting what we got... I got 6 conditional offers, varying from AAA to (I think) ABB.
  15. There is really no such thing as majoring in the UK - you apply for one subject, and study it. Some courses are more flexible, but they're in the minority. You do sometimes get a chance to do unrelated modules and the like, however.
  16. Well, one is also playing, and the other played last term... we're going to go and get some more targets tomorrow.
  17. I think it's more that naturally they are pink as a result of what they eat, but the food they give them in captivity makes them white. The same is true of salmon - most salmon you buy in the shops is dyed pink.
  18. Ok, that was just seven kinds of awesome. I'm playing in one of those real life assassination games that lasts the whole term, and I just got a kill by the following method: I went to my target's house with two friends, who knocked on his door while I hid. One of them proceeded to burst into very convincing tears, screaming "he said he would come out!" while the other comforted her. He did come out, but was very suspicious, though this was no matter. I appeared from around the corner and shot him with a rubber band gun.
  19. Had an epic day yesterday, involving stories that should not be told at the dinner table, go, haggis, and no work.
  20. Tried it, got bored after a few minutes/when my computer crashed.
  21. Happy birthday to he who is Sprout.
