Ah OK, when I choose to play a ranked match it tells me 'myself or another party member does not have the required maps' I'm the only one in my party so I presume it's me, I downloaded the free booster map pack, but do i need to pay for more map packs to be able to play ranked matches on dedicated servers?

Actually from Modern Warfare 2 onwards in the COD series, not having the map packs meant nothing, you could find a game as quick as having all the map packs, you were never in a lobby that loaded one of the downloadable maps, it was all separate. So it was never pushed in your face.

Could you connect the dodgy hard drive as a secondary one to another device? You might be able to get the data off that way, but it does sound like it is dead though.
