Telltale Games lays off majority of staff
Julius replied to Ashley's topic in General Gaming Discussion
The Final Season of The Walking Dead has also been cancelled — Episode 2 will be the final episode. I have to wonder if customers that had already purchased the season pass will be reimbursed, obviously not by Telltale, but perhaps by PlayStation/Xbox/etc.? Seems like a sorry state of affairs, but the writing has been on the wall for some time now. I guess we can only hope for the best for everyone being laid off, I can’t imagine what working in an environment where the place is clearly in trouble - and has been for a long time - would be like. Gaming Podcasts: A Thread about Listening to Others

Twenty minutes or so into this week’s EZA podcast, and as much as I love the Allies...Jones really does say some odd things from time to time. For instance, we’re 18 months into the Switch’s lifespan, and he says that he was beginning to worry that we wouldn’t get Animal Crossing on the Switch at all prior to last week’s announcement. He then goes on to imply that the games cater to only a tiny corner of gamers, despite it easily being one of Nintendo’s most successful modern franchises? -
Wasn’t really sure whether to put this here or in the GO thread, but I suppose that news of it coming was first revealed in a Let’s Go trailer, so... The design of the new Pokémon being released later this year with Let’s Go, as advertised in trailers, appears to have leaked — in the network traffic of GO, of all places. So as to not spoil the potential surprise of this Pokemon’s design, it can be found hiding in the spoiler tag below. According to @Serebii, this design also has a shiny variant, and so is unlikely to be a placeholder. I have to wonder if the reveal of this Pokémon will be bumped up, assuming that this really is its design?

Yeah, I get what you mean. From behind, at least, they remind me a lot in visual appearance of the ship found in No Man’s Sky and Starlink. Another reason might be that, with one ship in particular, it’s very clear where they drew inspiration from... ...the Porsche 917 Gulf, probably one of the most recognisable car designs from Le Mans. Also vaguely reminiscent of Stitch’s flying ship from Lilo & Stitch: Certainly not the most original of designs to be found in Star Wars, that’s for sure. I’ll probably check Resistance out at some point, but I’m not particularly fond of its setting, characters, or art style, from what we’ve seen and heard so far, so I might just wait until a home release or the launch of Disney’s streaming service (I would assume that it’s coming to that?).

Yeah, I was thinking about this the other day, and reading through some old threads about Virtual Console on the Switch...and it just doesn’t add up. They've said that they’re done with the Virtual Console branding, and, beyond the NES stuff that’s just come out with Online, that’s all that they’ve really said outside of mentioning SNES being a part of Online last year in a page update. Could there be different tiers, giving access to different eras of games? Will we cycle through consoles on a monthly/seasonal basis? The £17.99 per year is such a low amount compared to an annual PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live subscription that there’s still room for them to increase it, add different tiers, or change their system entirely. It does feel like there are still a few questions which could, and probably should, have been answered by now — and, of course, the sooner the better. For instance, how long will we be waiting for SNES games? Will we continue to see staggered releases as is planned for their NES catalogue across a number of months, or could we potentially see a massive amount of games added, either adding games from several consoles at once (i.e. multiple SNES and GB games) or a huge chunk of a console’s catalogue at once? I think that adding online functionality to these games gets much better (at leat potentially) once we get into later consoles — I mean, multiplayer Super Mario 64, anyone? One specific game that comes to mind when talking about this, though, is Mother 3, a game long teased and rumoured to be coming West, and which, according to some rumours, is completely officially translated (I’ve heard that the fan translation of the Japanese game includes a word or two that I’m sure Nintendo wouldn’t include in their own translation) and just waiting for release. Would this game really just be dropped in as part of the Nintendo Online catalogue (we could be waiting a while if so, considering that it’s a GBA game) as opposed to getting a full release? In a similar vein, Earthbound Beginnings (Mother) was released only a few years ago for the first time in the West for the Wii U’s Virtual Console — what will become of this game now, and will it not be made available for purchase again? I suppose an Earthbound/Mother trilogy is within the realms of possibility, but then I feel like Nintendo would be sending mixed signals if something like that were to come to fruition. Its just such a weird one. On the one hand, there are tens of, if not around a hundred, games that I really want to play from Nintendo’s Virtual Console, most of which for the first time, and I’ve debated purchasing a Wii with all of its VC titles and a Wii U to transfer it to (don’t know if that’s still possible) in order to have access to its Virtual Console catalogue, and have even thought, momentarily, about just emulating some of these games. But the fact remains that the Switch, as a portable and home console, would easily be the best way to experience many of these games (and plough through them), so it’s frustrating that the easiest way to access many of these games would be to buy one of Nintendo’s old systems, of which Nintendo wouldn’t see a penny. I have a huge backlog (both a blessing and a curse in a situation like this) which spans multiple platforms, so I’m in no rush to dive into the Nintendo games on that list, but I’m a 19 year old with huge interest in games both present and past. I know that I’m not the only gamer who hasn’t played many of these games that wants to play them, due to age or accessibility, because more and more gamers are coming through, with a diverse approach to gaming which is rarely ever “I only want to play brand new AAA games”. In the modern age, with so many eyes seeing legacy titles for the first time and wanting to check them out thanks to recommendations from sources all over the internet, I can’t help but feel like Virtual Console came much too soon. The Wii eShop closes early next year, and as of earlier this year, you already can’t add points to your account to spend on games there. I only hope that Nintendo don’t take too long to move on to adding games from other consoles to their catalogue, and have a massive surge in legacy titles arriving on the Switch around the time that the Wii eShop closes. And, if they do, I hope that they don’t continue to drip feed legacy titles at such a slow rate, because, otherwise... I probably will have to seek out that Wii and Wii U.

Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4/Xbox One - 26 October 2018)
Julius replied to Sheikah's topic in Other Consoles
Here’s a meaty Easy Allies preview of the game: The details written about in Kotaku’s preview and in a detail-centric piece by IGN are also well worth a look over. -
Sony only have the film rights to Spider-Man, with everything else (video games, TV shows, merchandising, et al) still being under Marvel’s stewardship. This is because of Marvel having to sell off some assets (mostly film rights) back in the 80s when they fell into hard times financially, and this is also the case for the likes of the X-Men and Fantastic Four (until the Disney acquisition of FOX takes place as planned in the first half of next year). I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney/Marvel attempted to purchase Spidey’s film rights before coming to an appearance agreement for the MCU, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they tried to get the film rights back within the next few years. However, because Sony have the film rights to Spider-Man, they can make video games based on that film license, which is why we’ve seen Spider-Man games based on the films in the past. So, with regards to this game: Marvel basically got to kickstart a Marvel video game universe in which they aren’t beholden to the input of any external companies. This makes even more sense when given the context of Disney’s situation, where they already have something of a monopoly on the film industry, which in total is worth ~$40 billion per year in revenue, whereas the video games industry is estimated to be worth ~$150 billion per year in revenue by the end of next year (though, it is worth noting that mobile games account for roughly 50% of that revenue), and is a pie that Disney hasn’t really successfully dug their fingers into. And to push that 3.3 million figure further, this from USAToday provides some context that I imagine Disney shareholders will be salivating over: Video game releases are nowhere near as front loaded as their box office counterparts, too. It’ll be very interesting to see how long it takes to get to 10 million units sold.

New story trailer from Tokyo Game Show:

It’s a real weird one. They show an angle in this video at 02:30 in the video below that we didn’t get to see in the other video, and it does look like he just puts his hand on his head — at worst, it seems, with a little pressure? It’s clearly the reaction of the defender and his teammates which got Ronaldo sent off. It’s impossible to tell from the replays what exactly his intention was, because I see no malicious intent . If there was, then maybe, at a complete stretch, it’s a yellow card? It’s not like he slapped him or pushed him over, which would be much more obvious. I really don’t know what the ref on the byline saw, so I’d be interested in hearing what he thought he saw. There’s no way that this isn’t rescinded, though — unless it was a blatant red card (like an aggressive lunge or a slap across the face), UEFA would be shooting their ratings in the foot to not let Ronaldo return to Old Trafford.

Colorware have gone all the way and have finally gone ahead and painted an NES-inspired Switch. They also have an American SNES-inspired Switch, too. The price tag is steep, though, at $599. There are also Joy-Cons and Pro Controllers with these themes being sold separately. Not really a fan of the SNES one, but I think the NES one looks pretty sleek. C’mon Nintendo, just hurry up and give us some more colour variants for the Switch...

Quiet in here considering the Champions League kicked off yesterday...with some superb games. Messi’s hat trick against PSV was probably the highlight of last night: The talk of tonight is probably City losing to Lyon at home and Ronaldo getting a red card for, well...I’m not really sure, to be honest...on his UCL debut for Juve. I have no idea what the ref on the byline could have seen in this to warrant a red card? It’s never fun to see footballers in tears, and I can see why Ronaldo is frustrated, because we’ve seen slowed down replays and I don’t see it either. I have to imagine that Juve will appeal that, and I’d be surprised if an appeal ended up being unsuccessful.

PlayStation Classic Announced (3rd Dec 2018)

I don’t know if they would be...I think the original PlayStation had sales greater than the combined sales of the NES and SNES? -

Uh, so Online just got announced via their YouTube and social media accounts...Online is coming in November of this year, initially as a public beta. Hmm. In addition, they had a Q&A with IGN regarding Online. What an odd way to announce it. It’ll sell like crazy, but we’re what, five weeks away? I know that they’re about to ramp it into high gear...but still, such an odd choice to leave advertising so late for such a big game. -
PlayStation Classic Announced (3rd Dec 2018)
Julius replied to Hero-of-Time's topic in Other Consoles
I think I’ll wait and see what else is coming with it. I have a backlog which could fill up an entire corner of the Smithsonian, with a good number of those games being on the PS1, but I’m not really in any rush to get through it anyways, and I’m enjoying bouncing between new and old games. If it has a fair amount of the games in my backlog (like three or four), then I’ll probably pick it up, but otherwise, I might just put this money towards a PS3, which already has many of the PS1 games that I want to play as Classics. Or, unless it’s overly priced, I guess I might as well just hunt down the physical PS1 version of the game of the game instead, seeing as my PS1 and PS2 still work fine? -

PlayStation Classic Announced (3rd Dec 2018)
Julius replied to Hero-of-Time's topic in Other Consoles
I mean, the SNES Classic had an original RRP of £69.99, didn’t it? £20 more for games from a generation later, many of which are visually more complex being in 3D, doesn’t seem too much for me, especially when £100+ was a number being floated around by many when speculating about a hypothetical price for an N64 Classic (some of that I’m sure down to the controller). I don’t know, I just guess it’s just a bit too soon to call judgement on the price seeing as we have another 15 games to be revealed. Yeah, I’m not too confident either, so I’ll probably wait to see all of what they’re offering before I consider picking it up. And I had no idea, that would be awesome! Now if only Konami could get to work with getting the rest of their legacy titles already found on PS3 on the PS4...hahahahaha. -
PlayStation Classic Announced (3rd Dec 2018)
Julius replied to Hero-of-Time's topic in Other Consoles
I actually can’t remember a time when I haven’t seen a mini console (probably unlicensed...) packed with old SEGA games. At most, I just think that the Nintendo NES and SNES Classics proved that mini consoles produced by the original manufacturer could generate insane demand, and sell much better than slowly drip feeding the games digitally onto their digital storefronts. I just wish that PlayStation had a bit more to show us in their initial reveal, because I don’t think that anyone’s really salivating over Final Fantasy VII considering that it’s on PS4, unlike Final Fantasy VI for the SNES Classic, which had such a large gap between its last console release (Wii/PS3?) and it’s release on the SNES Classic. Revealing this with games like Metal Gear Solid or Symphony of the Night, which aren’t on PS4, I feel would have made much bigger waves.
