Posted April 6, 2009 Looks like SGU has been picked up by Sky One for the UK LONDON -- Sky One, the flagship entertainment channel of satcaster BSkyB, has snapped up exclusive free and basic pay U.K. rights to the latest installment of the "Stargate" saga -- "SGU: Stargate Universe." "SGU," starring British thesp Robert Carlyle as the enigmatic Dr. Nicholas Rush, is said to be edgier and darker than previous incarnations of the sci-fi skein. The deal with MGM Worldwide Television Distribution also gives Sky One non-exclusive VOD and download-to-own rights for the entire "Stargate" catalog. "SGU" will bow on Sky One in the fall. Posted April 9, 2009 Third SG-1 Movie Green Lit There’s finally progress on the third Stargate SG-1 movie, with news coming out from multiple sources over the last few days that MGM has officially given the film a green light for production. The movie is expected to film in 2009 — probably in the fall, to avoid too much production overlap with Stargate Universe. “I can almost guarantee we are proceeding with the SG-1 movie this year,” executive producer Brad Wright told GateWorld in an interview last week. He said that deals are still being worked out, but he still plans to make it the same Jack O’Neill-centric film he first teased last year. He said that the Atlantis film is also still in the works, and MGM has every intention of making it. “When we start shooting the Stargate SG-1 movie depends on whether we do the two movies back-to-back,” Wright elaborated during his on-stage Q&A with executive producer Robert C. Cooper at the Creation convention Sunday. “The Stargate SG-1 movie will probably start shooting in the fall. I say ‘probably’ because there are a lot of deals that have to be finished being put in place before that can actually happen. That would leave the summer [of 2010] as the release time, roughly around the same as Continuum.” Stargate: Continuum debuted on DVD and Blu-ray at the end of July, 2008. The new movie is currently being written by Wright and Carl Binder, and will feature Richard Dean Anderson as O’Neill. “I had a story idea that really worked with O’Neill,” Wright told the Vancouver crowd. “And it’s not just his character, by any means. It’s a Stargate story that brings O’Neill back in a big way.” “The movie has been green-lit,” Anderson told his official fan site, RDAnderson.com. “There are so few details beyond the ‘go ahead,’ but I sat next to Charlie Cohen and across from Brad Wright at dinner two weeks ago (the cast dinner for the launch of Stargate Universe), and just an hour prior to sitting down to mediocre cuisine, Charlie had announced MGM’s intention to make the next Stargate movie.” Producer Joseph Mallozzi reiterated that, although Stargate Universe and the SG-1 movie are moving forward right now, the studio still has every intention of producing the Stargate Atlantis movie. He and writing partner Paul Mullie are writing the script for that project, and hope to have the first draft done by the end of April. “No firm production dates for either movies,” Mallozzi said, “but if I was a betting man, I’d be looking at this fall.” Well hopefully this'll be good. Posted July 24, 2009 Looks awesome, looks more movie quality than TV show... hope they keep the budgets to that level. I think yesterday was watching an ep of SG-1 the ep with Valaha's dad Jacet, and there was a dialog I only realised was having a dig at the shows smaller budget, haha. The start of the trailer was a bit weird... who's the fat kid and why does teh airforce want him? I thought it was a spoof trailer at first. Can't wait though, Oct 2nd the day after my birthday, yay. And hopefully the 3rd SG-1 film won't be much further away, I'm hoping July next year, fingers crossed. Posted July 25, 2009 (edited) Yeah that boxset is definately on my list of things I need to buy, especially at the moment as im in a real Stargate mood having watched that trailer and the Children Of The Gods Final Cut yesterday. SDCC 09: Stargate Travels Across the Universe The cast and creators of the new Stargate series, SGU (that's Stargate Universe), held a panel today at San Diego Comic-Con. Producers Brad Wright and Robert Cooper moderated the panel with series regulars Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting, Ravenous), Ming-Na (ER, Mulan), Jamil Walker Smith, David Blue, Elaine Hoffman, Brian J. Smith and Elyse Levesque. The first thing we were shown was a trailer of the upcoming SyFy series: * Most of the preview trailer is a montage of clips, some of which move in chronological sequence pertaining to the events of the pilot which contains the "set up" of the show. * Robert Carlyle's character, Dr. Rush, talks about there being a Stargate within the universe itself. * We find out that Rush and others have placed an actual astro-physical Stargate problem into a videogame to see if anyone out there could solve it. A young man played by David Blue solves it and is very surprised to find out that interplanetary travel is real. Rush whisks him off to a planet 21 light years away. * Dr. Rush seems very invested in using the far-reaching Stargate for exploration of the universe. * There is a meeting to unveil new Stargate tech, but the base falls under attack. * Carlyle tells the guests that they're not "going back home." Military escorts and guest head off through gate and wind up lost in space. "Where are we?" someone asks. * The rest of the trailer was filled with conflict amongst the characters, particularly the guest and soldiers versus Dr. Rush, who doesn't really want to find a way back home. * In a snowy location, one of the characters mentions that the place looks like Hoth. * The last shot shows Richard Dean Anderson. A fan asked Robert Carlyle about what attracted him to this series, being that he's mostly known for his film work. Part of the appeal was that Carlyle was looking for something different and out of left field. Carlyle himself doesn't like to think of things along the lines of TV, film or theater – "It's about the part and the people you're working with," he admitted. "They've given me a great platform to express myself." Wright told the crowd that Amanda Tapping would be in the pilot and that Richard Dean Anderson would be "appearing sporadically throughout the season." The series itself is shot differently too, Wright remarked. "It's much more handheld. Much more dynamic." Copper stated that "at its core, even with everyone saying it's darker and grittier, it really is just Stargate. One fan lamented the loss of Stargate Atlantis, which he considered to have ended prematurely. Cooper agreed slightly, stating that there were certainly more stories to tell, but that a five-year run could hardly be considered "prematurely." He went on to state that, with SGU, they wanted to return to a more "contemporary" feeling with "people in the here and now in extraordinary situations" and to seek to make the "characters more identifiable." Other quick tidbits about the show: * Ming-Na's character, Camille, is a lesbian. * They will answer more questions about the Ninth Chevron, but not the Furlings. * Brad Wright wants everyone to know that you can watch SGU even if you've never seen Atlantis or SG-1. Posted July 26, 2009 Well the Goa'uld are pretty much beaten anyway so its doubtful it will be them, the Ori are gone, replicators aswell and it should only be Wraith if they were in the Pegasus galaxy. I assume whoever it is that attacks them in the trailers wont be the main big bad as its what forces them to go to this new ship. Thats a good point, I think I remember the producers mentioning we might see them again. Theres also the rogue Asgard from SGA I guess but I think it will most likely just be some nameless badguys so not to confuse any new viewers, if they are just there to drive the group through the gate for the story then they wont be too important.
