IGN: Following the opening of the Final Fantasy XIII official site on Friday, Famitsu.com has posted a huge update on the game. Most of the information was shared in the site's print version a couple of weeks back, but the online posting at last allows everyone to see the screens for themselves.

You can see the screenshots by browsing over to the original Famitsu.com article. Here's a screen-by-screen analysis, from top to bottom.

First screenshot

That hood may deceive at first, but the green eyes should leave no question: that's pigtail girl! Her full name is actually Oerba Dia Vanille. It was revealed a while back that she's a resident of the Pulse underworld. She was banished there by the religious government that governs the overworld of Cocoon. The governing body banishes anyone it believes to have been influenced by Pulse to the world below, although it seems that with Vanille at least, the reason for her suspicion was never shared.

Second screenshot

This shot shows Lightening in a train -- presumably that same train that she's been infiltrating since the first FFXIII trailer from years ago. Lightning, while once a soldier of the Cocoon government, now fights against the government. She's infiltrated the train in order to free people who are being banished to Pulse. She's not alone, as Famitsu.com says that she's being accompanied by a male character (this may or may not be in reference to Snow, aka bandana guy).

Third screenshot

There isn't really any solid information provided by the Famitsu.com text for this shot, so you can guess for yourself what it is that Lightning is investigating. The the male character in this screenshot is another unidentified character.

Fourth screenshot

That menacing-looking character is an officer in the Cocoon army. As you might expect, officers like this guy have far greater power than regular soldiers. The Famitsu.com text also notes that the Cocoon army has, in addition to standard soldiers, powerful weapons and monsters under its command.

Fifth screenshot

This shot is from prior to battle. In FFXIII, you can see your enemy in advance, and can evade them if you don't want to fight. The transition to battle is said to be seamless.

Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth screenshots

These shots are all from the heart of battle. The FFXIII battle system is command based. You select commands from a command palette, adding the commands to a stock. The moves in the stock are executed all at once. The resulting actions differ based off the selected commands and their ordering.

The commands you can select are your typical Final Fantasy commands for attacks and magic. Also shown in the screenshots is a "launch" command, which sends the enemy flying into the air and allows Lightning to show off her acrobatics. The Famitsu.com text does not specify if there are any limitations on the ordering for your commands, although it seems like placing two launch commands in succession would be a bit silly.

Each command has an associated cost. In the screenshots, the commands for attack, fire, launch, and cure all have a cost of 1. The Firaga spell, however, has a cost of 3. Lightning can perform a total cost of 3, meaning you can have three of the cost 1 moves or just one Firaga. It's unclear if Lightning is permanently limited to a cost of three, or if she'll be able to expand as her character develops.

There are still plenty of mysteries with the Final Fantasy XIII battle system -- notably the mysterious gauge and "bonus" reading in the upper-right side of the battle shots. These will presumably be detailed in a future update.

With the Final Fantasy XIII demo due to hit Japan in March through the Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete release, solid gameplay and story details are at long last starting to emerge on the game. It's likely that the information will continue to flow in over the next couple of months, so Final Fantasy fanatics should definitely check back periodically.

Rumour: Final Fantasy XIII is one of the most expected games by the gamers communauty for 2009. But actually we had no informations about a date for the western side release and that is why the announced seen in Famitsu is pretty interesting 'Final Fantasy XIII is set to hit retail store shelves on both sides of the Pacific sometime later this year'.

Final Fantasy XIII US and EU Release Date: After April 2010

We already knew that Final Fantasy XIII was hitting Japanese shores sometime in 2009. Today Square-Enix has apparently told business news site Reuters, that Final Fantasy XIII will be released outside of Japan during the 2010 financial year which starts in April 2010.

Some of you may be disappointed but this really is the best we could expect. If Square-Enix is trying to push the game out in Japan by late 2009, localisation and the Xbox 360 port will take some months to complete. A release date for Final Fantasy Versus XIII or Final Fantasy Agito XIII hasn't been mentioned.

Final Fantasy XIII got its latest blowout in Famitsu this week through a massive eight page feature. So, you're probably expecting an equally massive report here with all the details, right? Unfortunately, in typical style for anything Final Fantasy XIII-related, those eight pages are filled primarily with screenshots and speculation based off the screenshots.

Most of the info in the magazine was already revealed in a recent issue of Jump. Famitsu has at long last introduced its readers to Sazh Katzroy -- you know, the guy with the afro and the little baby Chocobo that lives in the afro.

We did manage to pick out a few notable bits, though. First off, a tiny bit about Sazh's combat style. While it was known that he makes use of dual guns, Famitsu also reveals that he can make use of magic as well. In the latest screens, Sazh is shown casting a fire spell against a giant enemy as Lightning takes what appears to be a blocking posture in the background.

Sazh's use of guns should contrast nicely with Lightning, who appears to be more suited for up-close combat (although it should be noted that Lightning can use guns too). We'll get a chance early on in the game to see the two in action together, as Famitsu reveals that Sazh is Lightning's very first battle partner in the game.

In a previous update, Famitsu.com mentioned an unidentified man who's in the company of Lightning when she infiltrates a train that's making its way to Pulse (this is the train from that very first FFXIII trailer). The mystery man is almost assuredly Sazh. He and Lightning have apparently taken the disguise of prisoners in order to get on the train.

FFXIII director Motomu Toriyama shared a tiny blurb with Famitsu's readers about the game. The baby Chocobo who accompanies Sazh, said Toriyama, was born recently and can only fly just a bit. The creature has yet to be named. We're not sure if Toriyama means that Sazh has yet to give it a name as part of the game's storyline, or if the development staff has yet to decide on a final name.

Finally, just one intriguing little bit for those who are trying to get an image of what FFXIII's battle system will be like. While the ability to mix and match commands as you like seems like it will give the game a strong strategic side, Toriyama notes that those commands are chained into combos resulting in a variety of actions, allowing for a cool, refreshing fight.

This presumably means FFXIII's battles are going to look pretty darn cool. Hopefully, Square Enix will start sharing some footage so that everyone can see for themselves.

No. If you knew how to play it, then yes, it was addictive.

And booooo for the late release date.

It was rubbish even when you could win every time. Especially after the game started with an awesome FMV which made blitzball look amazing.

Well I genuinely loved the idea of turn-based sport and the recruiting factor. I only got bored when, yes, I could win all the time but getting cool techniques/overdrives were great incentives to carry on playing.

And what is it with the Japanese and their thing for afros and birds? (points to that dude in Faron Woods in TP).

Yeah - sad to say it was very sluggish with the time stopping all the time, and the stat-based concept just turned it into a number cruncher rather than giving the feeling of a sports game. It was also incredibly easy, since it was just a matter of leveling up.

The greatest thing about this game so far is that it seems to be a return to turn-based battles, or at least looks like turn-based. No more FFXII, XI-style AI-automated battles, please. =O

and unsightly, wirey target lines.

Just watched the trailer on PSN.

Why is everyone so excited? Apart from the FMV it doesn't even look that good graphically.

Please someone explain to me. It's generic Square vomit.

and you work for Square Enix.

I thought the ingame graphics were nice for a RPG. But i guess you could say given the area is tiny and hardly anything is shown it should look nice. The ingame isnt that far off from the CG.
