So I created it in order to discuss (or make fun of...) the world's most "tacky" song competition! This year, as usual, the quality of the songs has reached it's lowest mark ever ! Between freaks, madonna wannabes, porn stars and cowboys their's a wide selection suitable for every imaginable taste. Now, here is what I think we can do: each user hears their country's song, and gives it a score on a scale from 1 to 10. Try to put your musical tastes aside and keep in mind that this show is watched by millions, so don't be so harsh with your country's song. I'll start: Portugal - This year Portugal tries their luck with a girlsband called Nonstop (formed in a reality show called Popstars). They know how to sing, and the voices are nice... but the song is not very "portuguese" and really sounds like an ABBA song. It's not very original and I'm afraid another 80's song won't get us far, still the chorus is pretty catchy so I'll give it 7/10. That sounds absolutely brilliant, I'm sure Terry Wogan will have a few words to say about that. I bloody love the Eurovision Song Contest and this year looks like vintage crop of hilarity compared to last year when most of the songs were fairly tame and same-y. That song is bloody brilliant, also her TV-show is even better. I think the text in icelandic is better but the song kinda looses it´s point when the people can´t understand the lyric. Go Daz! i find it shocking-on the making your mind up program there were better songs and better performances. but fair play to the guy, he got the nation to vote for him-just dont think europe will. Last year as each country was announcing their scores I was looking in an Atlas seeing how close one country was to the other that they'd given 12 points to. And Terry Wogan was right, neighbouring countries score each other highly. "Aah, you're song is sheet, but you give us nice tomatoes, I give you 12 points." I'm thinking of going with one of the Scandinavian lot, because apparantly their voting 'partnership' is looking pretty strong compared to the other big Eastern European 'partnership'. And yes the current finnish entry is the best this country has ever sent there. 7/10. It's good but imo almost all the songs from their "get heavy" - album are better. In the past, each country had a panel of 'experts' who decided who to give their points to, and traditionally this would be their neighbours/friends/nations they'd rather not piss off. There is now supposedly a telephone vote in each country, although, inexplicably, political voting still appears to be rife, especially among the eastern Europeans. It's really going down since Mozart has died. So I'll review the country closest to me which is Swiss. They have a pretty generic pop song that could play all day long in a shop without you noticing it. The music sound pretty synthesizer heavy but the voices are good. I'll give it a 12/12 because the Swiss guarded our airspace during the last Iraq War (I'm not kidding, but mind you we have 12 Eurofighters or so and even more Draken). My fav Eurovision song was "We were the Rockin Roll Kids" which won it for Ireland during that 4 year (or was it five?) winning in a row. Can't remember the name of the singer or the year though. Well, Sweden is one of the big Favs this year, so is Belgium. Finland can also be a suprise. About the "neighbour voting" it does exist, but it's really not enough to lead a country to victory. It can decide who passes from the semi-final though, but the winning country has to have a "kick ass" song (with a strong performance) that recieves points from most of the countries (and not only from neighbours).
