Eurovision Song Contest 2006

Ok, I got the idea of making this thread after noticing all the different nationallities of this board's users. So I created it in order to discuss (or make fun of...) the world's most "tacky" song competition!

This year, as usual, the quality of the songs has reached it's lowest mark ever :yay: ! Between freaks, madonna wannabes, porn stars and cowboys their's a wide selection suitable for every imaginable taste.

Now, here is what I think we can do: each user hears their country's song, and gives it a score on a scale from 1 to 10. Try to put your musical tastes aside and keep in mind that this show is watched by millions, so don't be so harsh with your country's song.

You can hear/watch the song here www(dot)eurovision(dot)tv: (click on multimedia lounge ---> Video).

I'll start:

Portugal - This year Portugal tries their luck with a girlsband called Nonstop (formed in a reality show called Popstars). They know how to sing, and the voices are nice... but the song is not very "portuguese" and really sounds like an ABBA song. It's not very original and I'm afraid another 80's song won't get us far, still the chorus is pretty catchy so I'll give it 7/10.

Ok, now i want to hear what you think about your songs :) Mean while, Hellfire presents you with this years biggest freaks of the contest.

Silvia Night from Iceland:

The lyrics of her song, which include lines like "I'm Silvia Night and I'm shining so Bright" or "the vote is in, I'll fucking win" are absolutely brilliant.

Ok, i think the picture speaks for itself.

That sounds absolutely brilliant, I'm sure Terry Wogan will have a few words to say about that. I bloody love the Eurovision Song Contest and this year looks like vintage crop of hilarity compared to last year when most of the songs were fairly tame and same-y. Apart from Moldova who had an old woman on stage beating a drum to the lyrics:

"It's jump up jungle, a little like break beat

Never seen that super hit - bunica beats da drum-a

Big mallet in the hand, high hat in the same beat

She's screaming like Hawkins, my old Big Mama

Bunica beats da drum-a like I never heard before

She's a slapping Miss Blackman, gimme some more

Check it, let's kick it, we wanna dance now

We are turning into hammers ticking rhythm out.

Grandma hits the drum

Grandma hits it hard

Grandma with a beetle hits the drum in da house!"

That song is bloody brilliant, also her TV-show is even better.

I think the text in icelandic is better but the song kinda looses it´s point when the people can´t understand the lyric.

the eurovision is sooo good!!! a great excuse to dress up-dana international style-get out the flags, whip off those velcro skirts and slag off the political voting whist pissing yourself laughing at Wogans wisecraks! :D

anyway i cannot stand the uk's entry-its soooo dire-even for eurovision-its not funny, camp, cheesy, or any good. its just dross basicly defo a nil points moment but hey ho 1 out of 10 will sufice

Yes, the original text was better... and more insulting:

(translated)

My song, super cool, no nineties crap

It's cool, okay, it's not gay

I've come here to stay

And the other bitches are covered in pimples

But I'm more tender

You love me, you worship me (Pretty)

But still somehow so lame

Eurovision isn't about the music, its retarded politics.

"Better vote for our next door neighbours! Otherwise they'll invade us!" style.

I don't know anything about our entry for Eurovision this year, I couldn't bring myself to watch Making Your Mind Up. Last year as each country was announcing their scores I was looking in an Atlas seeing how close one country was to the other that they'd given 12 points to. And Terry Wogan was right, neighbouring countries score each other highly. "Aah, you're song is sheet, but you give us nice tomatoes, I give you 12 points."

I though it was like that a couple of years ago. Isn't it now that the people of the countries vote for their favourite?

And yes the current finnish entry is the best this country has ever sent there. 7/10. It's good but imo almost all the songs from their "get heavy" - album are better.

In the past, each country had a panel of 'experts' who decided who to give their points to, and traditionally this would be their neighbours/friends/nations they'd rather not piss off. There is now supposedly a telephone vote in each country, although, inexplicably, political voting still appears to be rife, especially among the eastern Europeans.

I really like your idea Naruto and I wanted to review my country, however, it seems we don't have an entrant this year, at least we're not on the song contest homepage. It's really going down since Mozart has died. :shakehead

So I'll review the country closest to me which is Swiss.

They have a pretty generic pop song that could play all day long in a shop without you noticing it. The music sound pretty synthesizer heavy but the voices are good.

I'll give it a 12/12 because the Swiss guarded our airspace during the last Iraq War (I'm not kidding, but mind you we have 12 Eurofighters or so and even more Draken).

The Eurovision just hasn't been right since the advent of reality tv bands.

My fav Eurovision song was "We were the Rockin Roll Kids" which won it for Ireland during that 4 year (or was it five?) winning in a row. Can't remember the name of the singer or the year though. I actually heard it on the radio a few weeks ago, i don't know why but it just strikes an emotional chord with me :'(

That song was performed be Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan. It's one of my favourites too, the lyrics rocked.

"...We were the rock'n'roll kids.

Rock'n'roll was all we did and listenin to those songs on the radio.

I was yours and you were mine, but that was once upon a time.

Now we never seem to rock'n'roll anymore..."

I need to decide who to have a gamble on winning. I'm thinking of going with one of the Scandinavian lot, because apparantly their voting 'partnership' is looking pretty strong compared to the other big Eastern European 'partnership'.

Well, Sweden is one of the big Favs this year, so is Belgium. Finland can also be a suprise.

About the "neighbour voting" it does exist, but it's really not enough to lead a country to victory. It can decide who passes from the semi-final though, but the winning country has to have a "kick ass" song (with a strong performance) that recieves points from most of the countries (and not only from neighbours).
