Doctor Who

No point trying to avoid it, as 6 months is too long to go spoiler free.

Matt Smith was announced 11 months and 29 days before his appearance in the show, so at least it's less than last time.

Limited Edition & Individually Numbered Box Set

“The Time Lords have this little trick. It’s sort of a way of cheating death. Except, it means I’m gonna change.”

The Ninth Doctor, The Parting Of The Ways

This beautifully-packaged and limited edition coffee table book-styled collectors’ album is every Doctor Who fan’s dream possession. Individually numbered and boasting six DVDs with over 1000 minutes of Doctor Who footage, it brings together every Doctor’s regeneration episode: from the first Doctor, exhausted from battling the Cyberman, to Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor suffering from radiation unleashed by the Great One (a giant spider); and from the spectacular transformation of the Ninth Doctor to David Tennant’s emotional farewell as the Tenth. The album is adorned with superb photography from across the era and features detailed and informative accounts of every regeneration. And if that wasn’t enough, new to DVD is The Tenth Planet featuring the Doctor’s first regeneration – beautifully restored with the missing fourth episode now brought to life with stunning animation. Utilising the original soundtrack, off-screen photographs and a short surviving sequence of the Doctor’s regeneration the episode has been now reconstructed in animated form, incorporating the restored version of the surviving sequence.

BBC Rumored To Have Found Huge Stash Of Thought-Lost Doctor Who

Who.jpg

For loyal fans of Doctor Who, Christmas — or whatever the equivalent is on Gallifrey — may have come early. A new rumor suggests that the BBC may have uncovered a significant stash of lost classic Doctor Who material, including episodes that haven’t been seen since they aired the first time, all those decades ago. The scuttlebutt is that this happy occurrence will be officially announced this fall, tying into the show’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

Doctor Who’s early history has always been full of holes, as many episodes from the era of the first two Doctors (William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton) were taped over, destroyed, or simply lost. Some thought-lost eps have resurfaced in various places over the years, but there’s still tons of material missing. Now Bleeding Cool is reporting that two unnamed sources have confirmed to them that the BBC has recovered a big chunk of the missing material, and plans to release it sometime this fall.

Apparently some of the rediscovered material was recovered from an African engineer who had been nabbing things for years for his private collection. No word whether the BBC tracked him down or if he had approached them. Either way, Bleeding Cool says the material is rumored to include a full run of the 1967 Evil of the Daleks serial, of which only the second of seven episodes had been previously unearthed. The material may even mean fans can finally see the full run of Hartnell’s episodes.

If all this proves to be true, Who fans will have much to celebrate later this year. It will also add a bit more to the so-far underwhelming line-up of anniversary events. We’ve got the 50th anniversary special that brings back David Tennant, obviously, and a TV movie about the creation of the show. But so far it’s all seemed sort of lacking for a show that’s celebrating five freaking decades of life. Hopefully the rumors will prove to be true. What better way to celebrate the show’s long history than with revisiting parts of it thought lost forever?

But – and here is where it goes all sour – there is an increasing belief by people involved in this that it is a massive hoax perpetrated against the BBC, by a man playing up his own eccentricities for negotiation purposes, but at no point giving any real evidence that he had copies of the episodes in question.

[...]

And even if it is all just a hoax, remember, those episodes were transmitted fifty years ago. However faint, distorted and diluted, those signals have travelled fifty light years from Earth now, passing all manner of solar systems. One of them may host sentient life with interstellar flight technology, and may have the skills to capture and enhance those signals. And a spacecraft might be currently heading towards us ready to drop them off.

So just watching the new series watched 4 episodes in a row. Hooked! Love Clara way more than Amy and Rose, fav companion of the new set of series by far.

Very interesting how they have now incorporated the Eye of Harmony to this continuity. I wonder if this can end up some way playing into the issue of the limited regenerations (even though this is apparently a non-issue according to Russell T Davies)

Some revelations about John Hurt

During Prince Charles' visit to the set, the costume designer confirmed John Hurt's Doctor is the 9th Doctor, between McGann and Eccleston

Costume designer Howard Burden, who showed the royal couple a selection of costumes from the show, disclosed that the anniversary episode will feature John Hurt, who will play a “dark Doctor” seen briefly at the end of the last series.

He said: “There was a gap between Paul McGann playing the Doctor and Christopher Eccleston, when we didn’t see a regeneration, and John Hurt will fit into that gap. He is a past Doctor, not a future Doctor.”

Obviously.

It would be nice if they had his "birth" and "death". Surely McGann and Eccleston could be in this for a few seconds each?

Seems rather silly to "bridge" the gap without them.

There's a rumour going around that we'll see McGann regenerate into him, but nothing about Eccleston being in it

rumour is gaining momentum that the BBC will announce the identity of the latest actor to play the Doctor this Saturday evening...

August was the month heard in whispers about the official 12th Doctor announcement, and now it's arrived, that news might be coming sooner than we thought.

Starburst Magazine reports that the BBC has shifted this Saturday night's 7pm edition of Celebrity Mastermind to make room for the 12th Doctor announcement, to be made in front of a live studio audience.

The news was supposedly leaked on Twitter today before being hastily deleted, and is thought to have been under embargo until midnight tonight.

Bleeding Cool have added weight to the story, reporting that Zoe Ball is to present the announcement special, which was developed under the code-name Whodini.

Rumours attaching Peter Capaldi to the Twelfth Doctor role have been difficult to ignore this week, and we're very happy to be proved wrong on this count, but instinct says it's a smokescreen for the actual announcement. Should we be wrong though, what a Doctor Capaldi would make...

We'll keep you posted as soon as we hear a peep out of the BBC
