Julius Posted August 8, 2024 Posted August 8, 2024 (edited) No idea how this Collection didn't get a dedicated thread before (probably due to the silly delay between PC and console releases), but it is FINALLY getting a WIDE RETAIL RELEASE IN THE WEST! and now I feel like a right spoony bard for importing... I'll update the thread title once it has released to make this the dedicated thread for the Collection in general, but for now: FINALLY! Edited 6 hours ago by Julius 1

Hero-of-Time Posted August 8, 2024 Posted August 8, 2024 Fantastic. Guess I'll hold off buying the digital version now. 1

As of the other week, it's up to version 1.2.0. I don't really ever intend to roll from one RPG into the next. I went back to FF VI as I had a file going from when I picked up the Anniversary Collection with Ys X. Rather than play these in order, I chose to face VI head-on since, reputation notwithstanding, it's the one of these I like least. I played through it one and a bit times on GBA (mostly Micro iirc) and it didn't click with me like Dawn of Souls I + II and IV & V before it. I also had a good time with III on DS up until the final stretch. I don't even gravitate to FF VI in Theatrhythm. One of the things with it is that I feel like a passenger. It whisks you through the story segments with little time to just be with your party before you're onto the next bit with another group. It's pretty late in the game before you can choose between them all. Can't fault it for its ambition. Having had just come off Suikoden where I also felt like little more than an observer I decided to get back to FF VI to see if it's any more palatable. I picked things up on the Southern Continent where I reacquainted myself with my surroundings and available characters... The characters are something I don't have much affinity for either along with the staged feel of the game overall. By the time I was watching the end credits I felt like I'd come around on these aspects and could happily start another file, but soon after switching off the game I realised I was glad enough to see the back of this group for another while. Though I remember just attacking to win on GBA, there were a number of points this time around when I had to die and retry with different equips and/or party members (when available). One boss especially in Kefka's Tower had my number for a good while—I put getting past it down to eventual dumb luck rather than a masterstroke of the tinkering I did between retries. There's a lot crammed into FF VI and I like how so many townsfolk will clue you in on things in different parts of the world. It's a really well-put-together game that just hasn't ever truly done it for me. Perhaps next time. So since nothing was jumping out at me from the multitude and the cart was already in the Switch, I'm onto FF III. This is the one I was looking forward to the most as I always hoped the WonderSwan version would make it to GBA. It looks good, sounds good and feels snappy. I'm surprised to see the exclamation marks and arrow to board the airship as I figured those were just FF VI conveniences but it seems they're probably additions to the entire collection. Diagonal movement feels like a modernisation too far. 2 2
