Sméagol
So.. I've been neglecting this. My 3 favourites since the start of the year: Logan, The Lego Batman movie, Lady Macbeth, Hidden figures, A monster calls and Train to Busan were a few other films I've enjoyed. Beast
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST I adored it. Emma Watson made a fantastic Belle. The whole film stayed loyal to the Disney classic and added more to the characters as we got to know more of their pasts. It was epic in 3D too. Naar
Ninteteen Eighty-Four In a totalitarian future society, a man whose daily work is rewriting history tries to rebel by falling in love. Novel by George Orwell. Strong message, hot chick is hot. Could be seen as an "important" movie when you apply the message to today's society. Soylent Green In the world ravaged by the greenhouse effect and overpopulation, an NYPD detective investigates the murder of a big company CEO. Old movie, slow pacing. Everyone knows the most famous line from this movie. If you do, you know how the movie is going to end. I would personally really like to rent a place with "furniture". ARQ Trapped in a lab and stuck in a time loop, a disoriented couple fends off masked raiders while harboring a new energy source that could save humanity. Groundhog Day with a twist. Nothing epic, but still a nice watch. Inferno When Robert Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Dr. Sienna Brooks, and together they must race across Europe against the clock to foil a deadly global plot. Badguy has a plan. For some reason Langdon gets involved and has to save the world. Offcourse you know from the start he's going to succeed. But is the badguy's plan really that bad? Cube
Ghost in the Shell. Great visuals and a decent story. The pacing seemed a little off though, and some jumps were just too quick and some of the dialogue felt clunky, like they were explaining too much. We didn't need a full explanation of the meaning of the title within the first minute. Power Rangers. A lot of fun. Characters were great and it I actually really liked the changes they made. While I wish there was a bit more action, that can wait for the sequel. Lots of neat references and I couldn't stop smiling after THAT moment. Jimbob
Beauty and the Beast Sophie wanted to see it, i thought it was pretty good. Stayed faithful to the original animated Disney movie, which is a good thing. Oh, and it had Emma Watson in 9/
Jimbob
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Never saw it in the cinema, but finally watched it this evening. Pretty good solo story to the franchise, obviously had to have some CGI in for some characters. But i was impressed none the less. 9/
Sméagol
One month; more films. 2 film festivals actually. I missed Alien day! Alien is one of those films I can't remember if I've actually seen it, so this would've been a great opportunity, but alas, in the end I wasn't feeling up for it that exact moment. I did see another classic, American beauty, one I'm sure I've never seen before, and it was excellent. Ghost in the shell was shit. I've seen a few films at an animation film festival. One being Your name (or Kimi no na wa), finally! Another favourite of the year. Also very good was Seoul station, which is actually an animated prequel to Train in Busan I've mentioned in my previous post. They do things a bit differently, but I think I slightly prefer Seoul station. Then there was Imagine film festival, but I've seen enough films that I don't want to bother with all of them individually, I'll post trailers of my favourites below. Although I did get a second chance to see La región salvaje.. I missed the first 15 minutes at IFFR last time. Got to appreciate this erotic scifi drama more. Finally there's Guardians of the galaxy vol. 2. It's cool. Hilarious, some cool character interactions and even some development, but another typical weak Marvel bad guy who's simply disposed of. Still some great entertainment. Some of my favourites this month (apart from American Beauty and Guardians of the galaxy): Seoul station Zombies on a trainstation, the prequel to Zombies on a train. Your name Bittersweet fantasy romance. Girl asleep Cute and whimsical Australian coming of age. The life and death of Otto Bloom Fantasy romance in documentary style. Slash I have no idea why I initially dismissed this.. It's a sweet coming of age story about a guy writing a very specific kind of fanfiction (ah, that's probably why) but it's often hilarious. The eyes of my mother Nice dark and atmospheric horror El bar My favourite of the festival. A bunch of (very different) people get stuck in a bar. Apart from the mystery of what's actually happening, there are some funny dialogues and it's more about what people think, and ultimately do, to eachother. Pacing at the end could've been better, but overall, excellent. Loop Hungarian time travel shit. Cube
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Possibly even better than the first. Extremely solid film and doesn't even have the "disappointing villain" problem that a lot of other MCU films (incluging the first GotG) have. Lots of hilarious moments and the characters are amazing. Helmsly
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Possibly even better than the first. Extremely solid film and doesn't even have the "disappointing villain" problem that a lot of other MCU films (incluging the first GotG) have. Lots of hilarious moments and the characters are amazing. Yeah I watched it today as well, absolutely loved it. It felt like a fitting sequel to the first one. It's one of my favorite MCU films already

Naar
Ghost in the Shell [2017] I really, really like the anime. That being said, this movie feels like a dumbed down version of the story, for the masses. Relies heavily on visual eyecandy, Scarlett Johansson included. But all in all i think the movie is not terrible. There are some shots of Major walking away from the camera. She's now 32 years old, but still super hot. drahkon
Watched my first movie after I'd seen Arrival in February. Geez, I've really neglected one of my biggest hobbies. A couple of years ago I would've watched 20 movies in a month... Anyway. Split First of all: James McAvoy is incredible in this. Such a great performance. Secondly: M. Night Shyamalan is back. Well, at least that's what I would say after reading that his recent movies sucked. I've only ever seen The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and now Split and I loved them all. That final twist... Throughout the whole movie I thought it was a psychological thriller. A very good one on its own. In the last 30 minutes it turned into a very mild horror movie which worked surpisingly well. And then that last scene. Come on How cool was that! It's an origin story to the superhero movie Unbreakable? Absolutely loved it. I watched Unbreakable 14 years ago with my dad. I was 13 and blown away. Pretty sure my dad would've loved Split as much as I do
Sméagol
I liked Split, but I thought the actual ending was disappointing (not the surprise twist, I liked the twist). It was a bit of a cop-out.. Oh hey! You're the same as me. Goodbye. The end. Was feeling that the beast could've realised much sooner that she was the same. Regardless if he could have, we, as the audience, saw this coming miles away of course, making the ending pointless. The rest of the film was exciting though. Naar
Synchronicity (2015): A physicist who invents a time machine must travel back to the past to uncover the truth about his creation and the woman who is trying to steal it. Cool flick, but nothing epic. Fell asleep 2 times but thats more the weed talking. Not as overly complex as Memento or Inception.
Cube
Baywatch Dumb, but fun and enjoyable at the same time. The Mummy Surprisingly not shit. It does things a big differently and felt like a good standalone story while also introducing the "dark universe".
bob
Watched the majority of Step Up 2: The Streets on Sunday. I gotta say, I know that this film garnered plenty of critical acclaim, but honestly I found it to be a bit lacking. There was pretty much no character development beyond the main character, and even then it was poorly written. There were some glaring plot holes that I just couldn't look past, and generally the whole film just fell a bit flat. I feel like there's not much point me even watching Step Up: 3D at this point...? Sméagol
Yeah I have neglected this all year. I'll give you my favourites when I have reconstructed the complete list of films I've seen this year.. But Blade Runner 2049 is going to be at the top probably. Sméagol
Finally working on organising all those ticket stubs I have and reconstructing lists, I'm bumping this thread before I'll post my favourites for 2018 at the end of the year. Not taking into account some of the classics I've seen in the cinema (most of which I had already seen), these are my favourites of 2017: Favourites 2017 Raw The handmaiden Manchester by the sea Your name El bar Soul Mate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWvBgGZ5Dho The big sick Blade Runner 2049 Honourable mentions (in hindsight some of these should be upgraded) & stuff that deserves more attention La región salvaje Lady MacBeth Train to Busan Nocturama Seoul station Get out Hunt for the wilderpeople The fury of a patient man Baby Driver The edge of seventeen A silent voice And several others.. But I don't think I need to bring up things like the Marvel films, I'm sure youve heard of those.
