Super Mario Maker: Speed Run Competition

Just thought I would try and encourage people (myself included) to try out a few fellow N-E'ers levels, and a competition seemed a good way to go about it...

 

Suggested Rules:

 

1. Entrants need to submitted a single course. I'd suggest a 5* minimum entry requirement,

but if an entrant doesn't have a 5* or higher course just choose one of their more popular courses.

2. Play 3 courses submitted by other competitors.

3. competitors must state clearly which three levels they are submitting if they have posted more than the limit.

4. Post to miiverse on the flagpole showing your completion time

5. If an entry course is deleted (including if it is deleted and readded) the entrant will receive a penalty rank score.

6. Entries course completion times will be accepted from

16/09 - 23/09 BST. Entry time will use forum post time, including last edited time (to stop a cheeky entry being snuck in after the deadline)

 

Scoring.

 

Each course will be scored individually according to rank (1st= 1 point, 2nd = 2 points etc)

if a competitor fails to submit all 3 courses then they will receive a

penalty rank score for each incomplete course.

Once all 3 ranks are added together players will receive an overall competition rank.

 

The penalty rank score will be equal to the total number of competitors + 1

 

How to submit a score:

Once you have completed the level make sure to choose the comment option, leave a comment and the attached screen shot will show you on the flagpole along with your time.

New rules. submit up to 4 courses. As you can't play your own courses this acts as a handicap. Players who haven't submitted a single course will receive a 1 rank penalty on any courses they complete before submitting a course! (so if they came 1st on a course they will only receive points for being 2nd). I will try to do score boards for all courses with scores from N-E users, whether they have stated they are interested or not... I would ask that people verify the leader boards for their courses to check I haven't made a mistake (wrong user, not recognised a forum user's score.. included a time that falls outside of the allocated time etc.)

 

Points will be given for every course you take part in so long as you are within the top 10 players for that course (shouldn't be hard to get into the top 5 on most courses!).

Could you still pick 3 best courses though. I'll have two leader boards, one for those only completing 3 courses and focusing on those, and a general board that includes scores gained across all submitted courses in the allotted time.

The timing is just creepy!

 

Use my 4 levels I just uploaded, I've built them with hidden speed run paths in mind!

I actually only wanted 1 course from each entrant guys

But I see no problem with multiple courses being submitted.

What I would suggest is that each of the 3 courses chosen for the final submitted times are from 3 distinct different makers.

 

 

Does that sound fair?

 

So if I played W1-1-4 of Dcubed, but was 5th one level 1, 4th level 3 and 7ths on the other two, I would choose to submit my time for Dcubes W1-3.

 

my second course could be one of Glen-i's courses, and the final course would need to be one submitted by someone else. unless dazzybee submits that cave course, in which case I'll be heading for a 5 point penalty

 

Currently have the flu so I'm not really thinking straight so maybe it'll just work if people are sensible and don't submit 10 courses each.. some people can submit any and scrap restricting which levels can count to your 3 courses - just keep a restriction on playing your own levels??

That was the plan. I would recommend you just pick your most starred/personal favourite/level you'd REALLY like people to try and just submit that.

 

But as long as there is at least 1 course / entrant it's ok.. and there'll be just over 2 course/entrant even if you don't submit 1 course. Still, it would be nice, and would be my preference, to have 1 course just to add to the variety!

yup, so you're relying on everyone else to submit some courses.

I'm also thinking people can have as many shots at a course as they like, so if you get a better time on that course at a later date post it and it can supersede the time you just posted up. I'll pop you up in the first post with your time and try out a few more of these courses.

Sure you can join, the more the merrier. Sorry for not being clear, I have a cold and the main thing is people have fun with it.

You can play all the levels, but only three (of your choosing) will count.

If you post a time then later improve it you can repost your better time.

I'll add you in with your levels when I get home, battery warning just came on! in the mean while feel free to post any times you get

281 is the best that I've managed on W1-4, but that wasn't a completely perfect run and I'm pretty sure that 282 is possible...

 

W1-3 is definitely my favourite one to speed run though. If you can't beat his time, go for that one! I'm really happy with how it turned out!

I can see how he did it... but I'm just not consistent enough to pull it off myself. I guess I have five days to hone my skills... I think I'll try some of the unplayed levels first though, pick up a few easier points for the general board... then focus on trying to improve the 3 course board position!

I've recorded some footage of the best speed run paths of my levels. I'll probably upload them to my Youtube channel once the contest is over if people want to see the best (officially intended - if you can do even better than props to you! ) path through my levels

 

As for my own entries? Well I finally have a few days off work over the next few days so you'll probably see me upload some best times today or tomorrow whenever I feel like doing some runs (I have Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows to tuck into after all!)

Hard work and determination.

Fine, I'll give an actual hint. Once the path starts to branch, you need to stick to the bottom of the screen, do that, and it's completely possible to run through without stopping. Figure the rest out yourself.

 

Props to @Dcubed though, it's a very well-designed level. He claims 280 is possible, but I don't see how. He keeps going on about some nonsense with the "momentum of a moving platform"

Firstly I did @Dcubed world 1-1 in a new world record ( ) time of 478!

 

And I also did your first level in a not sure if world record time of 444

I've had a mad week, but it was my intention to definitely play the levels, I could submit the cave one for now, won't make one in time, but it sound like not many people can even finish it, never mind speed run it, I can nail it though
