Constantine TV Show in Development at NBC

In another stunning TV-related announcement from Warner Brothers, it looks like Swamp Thing's "supernatural advisor" -- the notorious John Constantine -- might be next in line for a television drama. Deadline is reporting that NBC is moving to develop a new series from David S. Goyer and Daniel Cerone based on the character.

There's certainly a rich history to pull from, as the character was created by Alan Moore and Steve Bissette in the midst of their Swamp Thing run, and he then went on to star in Vertigo's longest running series to date, Hellblazer, which just ended earlier this year with issue #300. The character has since been reintegrated into the DC Universe and currently appears in both Justice League Dark and his own solo book, Constantine.

I love Constantine.

NBC seems a little weird but they had that awesome Heroes for one season before it got cancelled...in my mind.

Warner Bros. TV and DC Comics are on a roll this development season with a third high-profile project. Constantine, a drama based on the characters in DC Comics’ John Constantine stories, has sold to NBC with penalty. It is written/executive produced by The Mentalist executive producer Daniel Cerone and David S. Goyer, the go-to writer for Warner Bros.’ feature DC adaptations. Constantine centers on John Constantine, an enigmatic and irreverent con man-turned-reluctant supernatural detective who is thrust into the role of defending us against dark forces from beyond.

...This better not fuck up Justice League Dark.

Just Googled him. Will NBC be sticking to the comic by having it in London, or will they change it so it will be set in an American city?

For some reason, the setting (and Goyer) makes me think that Starz/BBC Worldwide (Miracle Day, Da Vinci's Demons) would be a better match.

Currently he lives in New York. London, the city, literally won't have him.

I wonder if this might offer a backdoor for a Sandman series.

Hate to disagree... I think it looks absolutely terrible. A sensationalist interpretation of what could've been a fantastic adaptation.

Still gonna give it a chance... love the comics, it'd be dumb to just assume it sucks based on one potentially misrepresentative trailer.

I f you go in expecting Hellblazer you're going to be disappointed.

...But I'm not sure why anyone would go in expecting anything close to Hellblazer.

I'm glad they're writing that woman out of it, though.

The second episode was good but it felt very much like a second pilot due to the new character they have introduced. Its still finding its footing but imo I think its got off to a good start.

This has started? I'll give it a go.

The main theme is brilliant

So even if I don't like the show, I still hope they release the soundtrack.

How has everyone been finding this so far?

Personally it seems a bit like Supernatural with a scouse magician. Whilst watchable, it's certainly nothing special. The sort of thing I'd happily watch, but I'm not going to be looking forward to the next one or go out of my way to watch it.
